We had dinner there and I tried reindeer (taste between lamb and horse) and char and my wife had the salad. The food was really good and the service was attentive. The place is very casual and has a relaxed atmosphere. It was overall a...More

I had the appetizer of pate, and a main dish of Arctic Char. Having been traveling for a couple of weeks in Scandinavia by the time I dined at Ostabudin, I had become accustomed to Scandinavian prices (obscenely high). Ostabudin seems like a pretty good...More

Ate here on the recommendation of our guide on the I heart Reykjavik walking tour. Both of us ordered fish. Small menu, and not cheap (this is Reykjavik!) but well thought out dishes with interesting ingredients. I had the salted cod (pictured). Also the complimentary...More

We arrived in Iceland in the early morning and did a little exploring on foot around Reykjavík. Ostabudin was recommended by our AirBnB host and it was ~ a 1/2 mile walk away. We arrived to a cozy spot and were immediately greeted at the...More

We enjoyed a wonderful dinner here on a Tuesday night in June. I made reservations via email from their website but for an early dinner on a weeknight, you might be okay without reservations. It did start to get busy starting at 6:30 or so....More

This restaurant is attached to a beautiful deli, and unsurprisingly, the best things on the menu probably come from that side of the business (i.e. the local cheese plates, smoked goose, reindeer, game meatballs, etc.) We tasted quite a bit of lamb in Iceland, both...More

My husband and I ordered the cheese tray to share as a starter which featured 5 Icelandic cheeses, fruit, olives, crackers and bread. I had the seafood soup that was delicious and my husband had the lamb that he is still raving about.

My gf and I ate dinner here one night based on all the outstanding reviews we'd seen. They're well deserved. We got the reindeer entree and the lamb for our mains. It was one of the best meals I've had out in a long time....More

We picked up some nice cured meats and cheese from the deli attached to the restaurant. They also have to-go sandwiches.

We were only given the limited lunch menu when we arrived during lunch time. I believe there might have been 4 things on the menu including two soups and the fish of the day.

Description
Food connoisseurs and other gastronomes have ever since the year 2000 slipped into our basement during lunch hour to feast on various delicacies. But of course everyone knows that because ever since the restaurant opened for business it has been the least kept secret in the area. Ostabuðin has truly been an oasis on Skolavorðustigur because we have tried our best to offer a wide varaity of fresh and curious products which have tickled our patrons taste buds and in turn trickled salivating reflexes in the city center. Even though we have taken some pride in the queue that has formed outside our entrance every single day during lunch break for the past 15 years we have finally expanded our premises. Thus we can now welcome our patrons from dawn til dusk and offer them a variety of fish and meat dishes which we have refined with passion. Of course there is also a lot of cheese on the menu and now we can also serve wine with our fare. Our daily specials always include both a fish dish and a soup during lunch hour on weekdays. Do not hesitate to ask what is on offer today. Also, our seafood soup never disappoints. Our guests might have to share tables during the lunch hour rush but who knows – maybe you will make new friends. Bon appetit, Joi.
