We have been to Iceland several times, and we have been to this restaurant on past trips. We have visited many of the restaurants here in this country and on the whole, the food is very good in many of the places here, especially the...more upscale restaurants. While the food at the Grill Market is on the whole very good, there are some issues that I noticed once again on this visit and which were largely the same on a previous visit. Firstly, the portion size of the side dishes is extremely small for the most part and the cost of these sides dishes is extremely expensive. I had ordered grilled salmon and I had asked the waiter about the mashed potatoes. He said to me that they came with the fish on the plate. I told him that I was familiar with the plate and that I knew how little of an offering it provided when it came to the potatoes. I ended up ordering a side of mashed potatoes only to find it came in a very small bowl and cost quite a lot for the portion I was getting. I added on french fries to make the situation a little more filling, and I can’t say that they were really french fries. They did not taste like french fries whatsoever. My mother ordered a side of broccolini and asparagus, and it turned out to be inedible because of high salt. She returned the item, and they certainly did not charge us for this. I thought that that was a reasonable gesture on the part of the restaurant to not charge us for something that we could not eat, but everything else was very pricey for the quantity that we were getting. I ordered a cocktail that had gin, tonic, and many other berries included in the drink, and the cocktail was undrinkable, because it was simply too strong. As someone who suffers from headaches, this is not something I could afford to drink, and it was highly expensive as well. They did not offer to credit us anything for the drink, even though the waiter noticed that it was not consumed and that a full glass of this cocktail remained on our table.
I should also note here that last year, I ate at this restaurant, and I went back to my hotel and felt sick a few hours later. The same thing happened to me this time as well. I ordered the same exact food because I do not eat meat and regularly order fish, including salmon, when I am going out for dinner. I had the salmon this time, and I had the salmon on the last trip last year and in both instances, I had major issues with stomach related problems after the meal. Considering that there was teriyaki sauce involved in the food, I am questioning whether the restaurant uses MSG in their cooking. This is a chemical that a lot of people are allergic to and it should not be used in anything. Not all restaurants in Iceland use it; I asked an employee at my hotel about MSG use and he mentioned that MSG is banned in iceland. However, it could still be in some of the sauces that a restaurant uses when they are preparing dishes like grilled salmon. This teriyaki sauce was also used on the chicken skewers that I had ordered as an appetizer and this was something that I ordered last year as well. I can only assume that I was sick from MSG because of the type of sauce that was on the food that I ordered. My mother had no teriyaki sauce and she was not sick.More
