Popular restaurant. I would not refer to it as a bar as it is almost impossible to come in for a drink. The few places at the bar get used for diners. Many reviews refer to it as touristy and the menu does seem to...push the traditional Icelandic choices. Which seemed a bit gimmicky aimed at tourists. But we went there twice and many of the clientele were Icelandic. First visit was our first night in Iceland and spoiled by the chaotic table allocation and 'couldn't care less' attitude of the person handling the table allocation. Like several places we visited there seemed a reluctance to let tourists book a table in advance. My guess is that they get let down too often by no shows. So you have to wait for a table but with not much space for people to wait. Second visit was much simpler. OK, so we went early having realised that most Icelanders eat at 6pm. But we got a table immediately. Avoided the quirky specialities like the sheep's head or whale fin. Good selection of draught beers but of course at typical Iceland prices. Food was tasty and reasonably priced (on our first visit we would have said pricey but then we had not experienced the high cost of everything in Iceland).More

Great pub. The food was delicious, lot of choice of Icelandic types like reindeer burger and more… old English type of pub food choice with Icelandic hint! Highly recommend – lots of local craft beers to chose from and all well-kept establishment!

Grilluð langreyðarsteik, kartöflumús, laukhringir, klettasalat og Bernessósa Grilled fin whale, mashed potatoes, onion rings, rucola & Béarnaise sauce. My partner and I arrived in Reykjavik late last night on the Viking Mars cruise liner. After some online research, I convinced my partner that we had...to try the Grilled Fin Whale. Fortunately, for us, the restaurant opened a little earlier than the website indicated, for a Sunday. The restaurant was quiet when we ordered but it quickly filled up with enthusiastic diners. The grilled whale and my partners fish soup arrived promptly, as we enjoyed our white wine and local beer. The Fin Whale came cooked rare, as per the menu description, and was pared beautifully with the Malbec red wine, onion rings, mashed potato and bearnaise sauce. The serving staff were professional, friendly and timely. As the 5* rating I gave my meal indicates, I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Reykjavik.More

The Barinn has a nice interior with a traditional touch although it was established in 2007 or 2008 only. Very friendly servants and tasty burgers. What shocked us was that whale and Puffin meat was listed on the menu as traditional Icelandic food. At least...we heard from any Icelander we spoke to, this is not true. Probably one reason that Iceland is one of the few countries in the world still doing whaling is that tourist are ordering this food or restaurants are offering it.More

Cute spot. The bartender was so courteous and friendly - he even ran into the street after we left to give my husband a fleece that we had left in the bar ! I tied the Eldgos - Iceland’s version of a pink vodka drink...- fabulous ! Definitely recommend a visit !More

It’s often wise to practice a bit of caution when going to restaurants that are big on tourists, as the incentive to ensure returning customers isn’t necessarily the goal. However, Islenski Barinn was an absolute home run as far as food and drinks go. In...fact, we came here twice. The langoustine hot dog is one of the best things I have ever eaten. The horseradish dip is also incredible. Despite being perhaps a bit catering to tourists as a demographic, you do run into locals here as well, which is all the more reason to go. If you do happen to buy their shirts, they are by far one of the most comfortable and soft shirts imaginable.More

Very good Fin Whale appetizer! Wasn’t sure if I would enjoy it, but it was wonderful. Tasted more like beef. $16.50 - but worth it. Hubby had the beef burger n fries for $22.00 Our server was Karen and she was terrific! Thank you again.

I was hungry at 9PM, and their kitchen was open until 10PM. I walked in and they gladly took my takeout order, told me when it would be ready—and it was when they said it would be. I got the whale steak on a crumpet,...the puffin on a crumpet, and a lamb dog. All new foods to me, so I have nothing to compare them to, but they were all delicious—tender where it needed to be (e.g. the whale steak), and solid where else it needed to be (e.g. the onion rings that came with the whale were cooked to perfection: not too much breading, and it stayed on the onion.) The waitstaff were friendly and patient, and the ambience in the place, while I was there, was cozy.More

We stopped in for lunch and it is a great atmosphere with a nice selection of beers, both bottles/cans, plus several on tap. The food was also delicious. We had reindeer burgers and starter of both puffin and lamb flatbread. A perfect refuel for our...walk around town.More

Very Icelandic food in a good location. The staff felt a bit stressed however. Good value for the money, but not cheap. Had a three course dinner.

Recommended to us by our hotel receptionist as a good place to go for proper Icelandic food and beer. She wasn’t wrong! Worth the 25 minute wait to get in with friendly staff, lovely food, and great selection of Icelandic beers

Nice bar and plain food, not something ekstraordinary. I had to mention that portions was smål. I ordered lamb head, and it was 100 gr with meat. It can be categorised like light meal. You had to order the table before your visit. Cosy place...and good service.More
