About
Travelers' Choice
2024
The restaurant is named after Sumac, a deep red berry that grows along the Mediterranean coast and throughout the middle east. The smell of our coal grill will greet you as soon as you enter, where we cook a mixture of meat, fish, and vegetarian dishes. We are also gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan friendly. Our menu can be described as a narration of pristine, Icelandic seasonal ingredients, submersed in exotic spices influenced by mediterranean and Middle-eastern flairs. This is Icelandic cuisine with luscious and inspiring influences mainly from Lebanon and Morocco, while the bar includes wines and spirits from Lebanon, Morocco, new world and old-world wines including organic options, plus our specially house-made concoctions and classic cocktails. The interior of the restaurant, with a large bar and open kitchen, is a designer restaurant that creates the perfect atmosphere for an adventurous night out. The industrial tile and concrete walls meet light leather booths and perfectly lit lamps, while green plants and large windows lighten and freshen the vaulted ceiling and garden rooms.
MICHELIN Guide: Good cooking
A lively modern brasserie with on-trend concrete walls, burnished leather banquettes and a charcoal grill. Icelandic ingredients are given a Middle Eastern twist, with influences ranging from North African to Lebanese. Cooking is rustic and full of flavour; go for the meze sharing menus.

We came on a Saturday night, booked the table that same morning - most popular times were booked up but still a few to choose from. We opted for seats at the bar with a view of the open kitchen as we'd heard these were the best seats in the house, it was really fun to see the team working. The portions look fairly small but the food is so rich and flavourful that we didn't need more than 1 larger plate and 2 smaller/'snacks' between two of us. We had the roasted cauliflower w tahini (yoghurt removed to make it vegan) and pomegranate, grilled mushrooms w hummus and dukkah, and my partner had the smoked arctic char with hummus and sesame. Everything was delicious, cooked perfectly, menu items paired really well together and I loved the mix of middle eastern flavours with local ingredients. I would like to have seen a vegan dessert on the menu, we saw a lot of the date cakes being finished in the kitchen which looked and smelled incredible. Service was good but was let down a little towards the end of our visit. When we said we didn't want dessert we were immediately given the bill and a card machine but we still had half a drink each to finish so this felt a bit rushed. On arrival we had our coats hung up for us but when we were leaving we were left hovering by the door/coats unsure if someone should be seeing us out, there were plenty staff around but no one came over so we had to rifle through the coat rack to retrieve our things and go without a final thank you/goodbye. Wouldn't expect this in every restaurant but in a higher-end establishment we'd have hoped for these extra touches. Overall though, a highly enjoyable experience and would recommend to anyone who loves middle-eastern food.

We hadn’t booked anything so as walking past thought the place looks nice, let’s try it out and what a great decision that was. We couldn’t decide what to eat so decided to go with the mixed meze and a bottle of valpolicella. We were sat at the open kitchen bar area watching the chefs freshly prepare our food whilst talking us through our dishes and seeing the great care and attention used for the dishes. The food, drink, service and atmosphere were all great. We were fortunate to get a table on the off chance on a Friday night but I would definitely recommend booking in advance to anyone who wants to go try some great Middle Eastern food. Being a big meat eater I was very surprised with the star of the show being the mushroom starter! Thanks to the team for a wonderful meal & evening.

Here it went far too quickly. Both food and wine arrived before we had barely started the cocktail. We ordered the 7 course tasting menu, it was good, but it seemed like it was about getting us out as quickly as possible. They asked three times if we had finished the main courses when there was still a lot of food left. After dessert, they didn't ask if we wanted anything else, but quickly brought the bill. Then it was still quite a while until we had been there for two hours. The waitress was also very unsure of what she was serving. This was not worth the money, unfortunately.

My husband and I ate here last week and one of the share plates we ordered was carrots which came on a bed of feta cheese. I had explained to the waitress that I have a dairy intolerance so could she please put it on the side which she happily agreed to. The plate came with the feta mixed in with the cheese as described on the menu and when we explained to the waitress she just said sorry she forgot to put the note on it (nor did she even offer to make us a fresh plate). We didn’t make a fuss as at the very least we expected it to be removed from the bill as we couldn’t eat it or maybe a complimentary drink or some small token of acknowledgement would be offered but no, our bill arrived totalling €170 for 2 gin and tonics, a peppermint tea and 5 tapas / share plates with the €20 cheese carrots still on the bill. We paid and left with a very bitter taste in our mouth. It was the only restaurant during our trip where we felt the prices and level of service just didn’t add up.

So we started by getting bad service by the door, we then ordered our food which was very mediocre for the price. The waitress did not come once to our unless we called multiple times, I think she was ignoring us. Then at the end we asked the manager for the bill and waited for 30 min and we still had to ask another waiter for the check.

We came in with high expectations as this is a Michelin recommended restaurant. For starters we had chicken wings and beef tartare, the chicken wings were not bad and the tartare was amazing. For main course we had lamb ribs and wolf fish, for the price of the lamb I was very disappointed in it being served by itself although they were good, the biggest disappointment was with the wolf fish which also came by itself and was served with the spine and bones in which is never done in Iceland and made it impossible to enjoy. When I told the waitress she just said I should’ve been informed but did nothing to remedy it. Then we had a dessert, first we received the wrong order and then we got the right one. Overall it was overrated, overpriced and lacking service, very unlikely to revisit.

Sumac provides a nice alternative to the regional cuisine mostly found in Iceland. They serve traditional Lebanese dishes with a twist. Some of our favourites were the fried halloumi with honey, Brussels sprouts with harissa and shrimp skewers. Service was great and the servers explained each dish as it arrived since the menu is mostly a sharing menu. Good vibe and very popular place. Fully recommend.

This was the BEST meal we had while visiting Reykjavík! We were walk-ins at like 9:30 pm or so and the waitstaff was kind and professional, knew how to answer our questions and were just great all-around. I looked a mess after visiting the sky lagoon that night, to be honest but they treated us just the same, which I appreciated haha. The food was so incredible, my husband and I sampled multiple things and everything was sooooo good! Like we couldn’t stop saying how amazing the food was. We also got cappuccinos which were a great touch to the meal since we don’t drink alcohol. We are so glad we came across this amazing restaurant and would highly recommend it!

We discovered Ox online a few months before our arrival and was intrigued by the concept so booked a table. There are only 11 seats and you sit around the chefs whilst they are preparing the food. There was about 12 courses which are matched with drinks (mainly wine but a beer and liquor too) and it's a set-price for food, drinks and service. Whilst it is not cheap, the whole experience was amazing. Each course was lovingly prepared and the Head Chef or his assistant explained the drinks and food. It was a very casual and convivial atmosphere and we were encouraged to ask questions and chat to the other guests. The food was a fantastic example of Icelandic produce and it was truly the best meal of our trip as well as one of the finest tasting menus we have ever experienced. We dined at Sumac too and this Lebanese inspired restaurant was excellent with great cocktails and drinks and fabulous food!

Good food and nice environment Sharing meal where the waitress advised us against ordering too much food. Many thanks for this, as we were very full. 3 people shared six dishes (1 large, two small, 2 sides and a snack). Nice environment despite the outside. Very cozy atmosphere!

Had an amazing meal at Sumac! Sat at the kitchen bar and got to watch all the action. Enjoyed the tasting menu —-every dish was awesome. But the two best were the Grilled Mushrooms on Mushroom Hummus and the Ling (local fish) on a tomato base. The female sous chef kept me company telling me about the dishes and chatting. Can’t wait to visit Iceland again so I can enjoy another meal at Sumac!

4 days in Reykjavik and we did not discover this place until our last night here. Strangely enough it was less than a block from our hotel as well. I did find it in an online search and saw... wow it is just a one minute walk away. We dined here on June 1, 2023. We had no reservation, just walked in and the very lovely hostess greeted us with a smile as we were seated immediately at a table near the bar. We did not get to see the dining room in the back, but we were happy where we were because we had a view through the large windows in front and we could see everyone coming and going from this spot. A lovely couple from Vancouver, Canada (we are from Minnesota, USA) were seated next to us, so we had a great conversation about our mutual experiences in Iceland. Upon entering the place, I was enthralled by the sweet aroma of food cooking on their woodfire grill. I knew the evening would be fine. My wife and I started with an appetizer of Fried Halloumi and a bottle of Rioja wine from Spain. Then my wife ordered the Roasted Cauliflower - with pomegranate, almonds & tahina yogurt. I had the Chicken Shawarma - with zhoug (a Yemini hot sauce), pickled vegetables & Toum ( Lebanese garlic sauce). From our orders, one can easily gather that this place specializes in Mediterranean dishes, They were oh so good and had the special grilled flavor. We were well served and enjoyed our fabulous meal. We finished with a dessert of Dulce de Leche for my wife and Coconut Ice Cream for me which had tahini and apple pieces. We really liked this place. I recommend it.

We are a family of 4 with a 5 and 9 year old. Had reservations, really looking forward to the meal. Food was great, but the service was extremely disappointing. Actually, the most disappointing in Iceland. Hostess sat us in the back corner , terrarium area which is fine, however we were sat and prettyich forgotten about. Bought a bottle of wine which the waiter held to pour for us and we didn't see him for 30 minutes so ended up grabbing it and pouring our own. We ordered the 7 course meal and took 1.5 hours from the appetizer to main course. Zero communication as to the status of anything. Took us three hours for the meal with minimal interaction for a $400 meal. Would not go back or recommend based on service.

We decided to have the Meze in Sumac so we could try lots of different food - this turned out to be a great idea and it was seriously delicious. Despite many plates being small, all together it was very filling. For a change we decided to try a Lebanese wine (which they let us taste before choosing) which we enjoyed. We also had pre-dinner cocktails, and as I mentioned I quite liked a pisco sour they said 'no problem we can make something like that' even though it wasn't on the menu (the drink I received was lovely). Decor is modern and open, you can view the grill and the bar area is fab looking. It was a random Thursday in January and packed, so suggest booking online if you're visiting from abroad. Service was attentive and friendly.
