In a small square of Gamla Stan under a chestnut tree you can find this cute, cosy place where you can take a coffee and desert, lunch or dinner. The food is nothing special but nevertheless well cooked and there is a wide selection of tasty wines and beers you can accompany it with. Candlelight in the evening and the... More

Delicious home made cakes covered the counter - oh, which one to choose! We opted for the Sverige kaka, which was delicious and went perfectly with the Americano and Capuccino, and served by very friendly counter staff. Not just a coffee shop, but a restaurant and wine bar as well. As per most Scandinavian countries, the prices are not cheap!

A lovely venue on a small square in Stockholm's medieval center. In summertime they have a few tables outside under the big chestnut tree that dominates the square. The risk you take in the old town is to end up in tourist traps with overpriced low quality food and crappy service. I was not totally overwhelmed by the food, but... More

Restaurant is located on a cozy square. Looks very atmospheric especially if you sit outside. I wish food was better. When we got it was warm not hot and taste is average. I was disappointed but my partner said the food is ok. Also you have too book table

I really love this restaurant. They always have a very large selection of cakes and half of them are gluten free. The gf princess cake is amazing and has a very generous amount of marzipan, and I also adore the gf carrot cake. Honestly, I have tried all of the gf cakes and they are all good! They also can accommodate... More

I could stay there all day working under the chestnut tree having great coffee and energy for the day. Carrot cake is perfect with coffee for starting the day and later for lunch you can grab some cold salmon salad with green smoothie. Do not miss bread and butter too. This place just have some energy that makes you feel... More

The staff is very nice. In your plate, that's very good, and the atmosphere is good. Just one negative point for me : with the burger, I think it was frozen french fries. Otherwise it's a well place to eat !

"Under Kastanjen" literally means "Under the Chestnut Tree". I found this place by accident on Saturday, and stayed for dinner. It instantly became my favourite place in Stockholm, and one of my favourite places in the world. Nestled in a romantic cobbled square (actually, triangle) in the heart of Gamla Stan, it's nicely hidden away from the usual tourist traps.... More

I ate home made meatballs in Under Kastenjen. It was served with mashed potato. The meal was delicious. Also they serve bread, butter and tap water free. I drank Organic Ale (craft beer) in there and it was good also. Meetball + 2 Organic Ales cost 300 SEK. The ambiance in outside is really good. But you need to ask... More

Located in the heart of Stockholm (Gamla Stan = the old town) this restaurant sitting in a small and cosy square under a chestnut tree is full of charm ! I recommend eating outside if the weather is nice. They have a selection of soups, salads and sandwiches and also homemade cakes and tarts. Not too expensive for the center... More

Staying in Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen

Neighborhood Profile
Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen
Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s historic old town and home to the Swedish Royal Palace. It’s the most central island of Stockholm and accompanied by the small island of Riddarholmen, mainly known for its famous Riddarholm Church. Gamla Stan tends to be a bit touristy at times but is definitely worth visiting: take a stroll past the well-preserved buildings and through the small (and also Sweden’s narrowest) alleys, which will make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time. This neighborhood offers a great combination of historical buildings and traditional Swedish restaurants.
