This restaurant has been built on an old prison. Situated in the heart of Gamla Stan, Stockholm. Really good for, for really good prices.

We saw a sign advertising salad, bread and a drink for 89SEK. To confirm, the salad, bread and drink are in addition to a selection of main meals. This wasn't particularly clear from the sign and I did think that salad, bread and a drink sounded like a fairly miserable lunch! The food on offer, although homemade, is fairly basic... More

We stopped by this restaurant and had the meatballs and the veal steak. The meatballs are exactly like the IKEA meatballs, and the steak was not a steak, but a giant meatball (good, but definitely not what we expected!)

Came here for lunch, food was ok (lunch menu 89 kr.) but not special. The special atmosphere described by some seemed not authentic to me. Some "antique" clutter arranged without much love... Staff, however, was friendly and quick.

It's kind of medieval and as such a fascinating place in an old town. Several chambers, low ceiling, dim lights, it all adds to the atmosphere. Service? Well, quiet and good. Food? Decent.

We had lunch at this cafe restaurant and it was enjoyable, The menu seemed a bit restricted, but that might be because we asked for the English version. The food when it came was served hot and it was tasty. There was nothing in particular wrong with anything - food, service, decor - but it wasn't memorable either.

We did the tourist thing and had the Swedish meatballs with mashed potatoes. The meatballs were good (but my moms are better) but the potatoes tasted as if they'd been mashed with lots of real butter. It was a lovely day, so we ate outside. You have to go inside and downstairs to pay however, which is a little confusing.... More

Located in the old town section Sten Sture breaths history. Unfortunately this sense for heritage can't be retrieved in their kitchen. We had lunch on their terrace. All aspects of the cafe, the staff and the dishes reflect a focus on tourists together with a quick & dirty attitude. They are friendly but impersonal. The ingredients have an average quality... We discovered this charming old cellar type place made out of brick and stone with odd staircases & eating nooks that beckoned you to explore. We only had drinks, so I can't attest to the food, but I absolutely loved the unique atmosphere. It's just off of Stortorget in Old Town and the quiet one-of-a-kind setting provides a nice place... Walking down narrow, steep curving flight of uneven steps, we were led to a quaint little cafe. The starter, soup, meal and dessert were all really nice. The atmosphere was cosy and felt home-like. The only disappointment was the limited choice of juices. If in the vicinity again, I would definitely go again.

Staying in Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen

Neighborhood Profile
Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen
Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s historic old town and home to the Swedish Royal Palace. It’s the most central island of Stockholm and accompanied by the small island of Riddarholmen, mainly known for its famous Riddarholm Church. Gamla Stan tends to be a bit touristy at times but is definitely worth visiting: take a stroll past the well-preserved buildings and through the small (and also Sweden’s narrowest) alleys, which will make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time. This neighborhood offers a great combination of historical buildings and traditional Swedish restaurants.
