I'd heard about Kanalen's reputation for excellent modern Danish food and was not disappointed at all. My starter was the standout: warm herrings on rye bread with an amazing tart apple crust. Superb! My main was a Danish take on steak tartar, with its dressing centering on a kick from horseradish. Excellent again. My friends had smoked salmon salads then... More

We chanced upon Kanalen in a review and made a reservation without realizing it's definitely one of this foodie city's gems. Situated on a canal, the space itself is open and white and lovely. Although an expensive restaurant, you do not need to wear a tie and jacket or any kind of formal wear. The menu is small, which is... More

I have visited The Chanel (Kanalen) on several occasions over the last couple of years to taste both their dinner (combines Danish, Italian and French cuisine) and the more modern Danish lunch version. Location is next to one of the channels in Copenhagen which is used by smaller ships and dinghies. The restaurant is small and provides some form of... More

I made an online reservation via their website with no problems and only a few days in advance. A lovely setting with amazing food and good wine. The staff were attentive and friendly and accommodating by speaking English. By far one of the best restaurants visited

This may have been the best meal we have ever eaten! We chose the prix fix menu and were not expecting the range of flavor combinations and quality of the ingredients. We were served an appetizer to start followed by a scallop salad. The main was a lamb and beet dish that was delicious! For dessert we were served a... More

We went on a Friday night -- it was tough to get a reservation even booking weeks in advance. The view of the canal is beautiful and canal activity (young swans and boat traffic) is enjoyable. The food and wine were fantastic. We had the venison and the rib-eye steak -- both were incredibly delicious and the wine pairings fantastic.... More

Situated on a canal bank, and old building with a modern twist. we had dinner on a Wednesday night and it was busy. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly, the red wine I ordered was not available but they replaced it at no extra cost. The food was a delight, everything tasted fresh. Yes we would go back.

We had a delicious dinner here in July, with the wine choices and were not disappointed at all. The service was impeccable which went with the food The waiters were most knowledgeable and explained the choices.

We went for lunch on a quiet Monday afternoon. Thinking they were closed as it was quite late, we were instead welcomed with open arms, perfect service and a wonderful meal. The set menu is from two to four courses and it we were full after two. Right on the canals of Copenhagen- a great summers day.

A restaurant full of locals - and us. We had the set lunch, delicious food, beautifully presented and served. It was a lovely day so we ate outside overlooking the water. Highly recommended.

Staying in Christianshavn

Neighborhood Profile
Just across one of the many bridges from Indre By, you’ll find Christianshavn. An eclectic area with old brick lanes, houses dating back to the 16th century, and canals which are home to many boats and ships, some of which has been turned into restaurants or even serve as fully furnished homes. The best known attraction in Chistianshavn is Christiania, a “free town” of residents who squat on a former military area. However just a stone’s throw away from Christiania, you’ll find some of the most fashionable waterfront apartment buildings in Copenhagen as well as the splendid Royal Opera House.
