Great home cooked food that’s worth waiting for

Small and homely place ( if all tables are taken it’s def worth waiting) that feels like you are eating with family! Stella cooks whats fresh and available and there is no menu. You get up to the counter, she shows you what’s on offer and you pick your favourites. If you like more than one thing she kindly makes up a mixed plate and you can try lots of different dishes. Everything is extremely tasty and absolutely great value for money.

A real gem

What a gem! Inamongst the more touristy shops is this lovely traditional cafe serving fresh, wholesome food at a reasonable price. We loved it. You can see the dishes she has prepared at the back of this little cafe and choose a plateful of your favourites for 9 euros. We had green beans and gigantes - both were the best we had all holiday.

The best home made food of our trip in Crete

Stella's Kitchen is homemade delicious food of the day made by Stella in the kitchen in front of your eyes, served fresh and delicious, in a small but cosy and nice place. This place, unnoticeable as surrounded by fancy tourist places, is a gem, not to be missed for real, juicy, quality, local, tasty Greek and Cretan food. About 150m from the Niaradze Mosque, this is a typical family place (mom in the kitchen and her son helping and serving the tables). Here you go straight to the kitchen to see the dishes of the day, directly in their pot, and decide if you want a mixed plate with several of them (9 euro) or just one specific dish. I had a mixed plate with cooked green leaves (korta: spinach like but a bit bitter and softer), briam (stewed mixed veggies with potatoes, zucchini, carrots, etc), rice with green & lemon, orange honey sesami chicken (amazing!). My partner also had a mixed plate: yiouvetsi (little pasta cooked with sauce and beef) and broccoli. We also got wise advise on the best food combination (taste and health) by Stella's son, Stavros. Everything was delicious and plenty. At the end, they kindly offered us some free very sweet grapes. The kindness of our hosts, pride of their food and culture made the experience even tastier. Everything included, all food, bread, drinks (one Mithos beer and a soft drink) = 23 euro. I would come here to eat every day, if I could.

Home Cooked Style Meal in Crete

When we went they let us know that they were getting ready to close and that they could serve us fish soup and whatever mains they had left. We got to try some Crete dishes I don't think we would try otherwise. The fish soup was very nice and a good start to the meal. They served us a combination of mains including glazed chicken, a beef/lamb patty and pork souvlaki. All the mains came with generous portions and sides including these large beans, okra, orzo, mashed potatoes and a mish mash of whatever they had left. We got to meet Stella and she shared with us that her ingredients are local and it sounds like the meat came from her family farm including a rabbit leg that was pretty good. There weren't many options open when we visited in March but we thought the town was worth a quick stop during our road trip on the island. What took away from the dinner was the smoking outside easily came into the restaurant and made one of our group members nauseous. A nice touch was that they provided us with riki and oranges for dessert but the oranges seemed to be out of season. We were told that if we visited around the lunch hour there would be lots of fresh options and we could make a choice for a main. We did have high hopes for this place considering the Google reviews and it is quite charming and cozy but we felt we didn't get Stella's Kitchen at their best. It is very fairly priced so if you're looking to experience a home cooked style Greek meal this might be a good option.

So good to have a momma away from home

Stella was there greeting guests and dishing out the plates; it is home cooking at its best. Everything was really good and the Fava beans were a special treat as they are not a common offering in the USA. Stella connects with each and every customer and her orange cake which she served complimentary at the end of our meal was light, fresh and spectacular tasting. It worth going off the beaten path to find this small haven.

We happened upon this tiny restaurant/cafe while checking out the old town and decided to return there for lunch. So glad we did, what an amazing little place. You don’t really choose from a menu but instead are invited to go and see what Stella has cooking on that particular day. We are both vegetarian and there were plenty of options. We chose to have a mixed plate and everything on it was fantastic. This is proper home cooked Greek food and some of the best we had. Real homely atmosphere and very reasonable prices. We also went back on our last day. Oh and also does takeaway so if your in a rush no problem. Will be back.

I love tasting typical Cretan dishes, attracted by the positive reviews, with my wife, we wanted to try the home cooking of this small place in the streets of the historic center of Rethymno. Mrs. Stella, very friendly, prepares tasty dishes, typical of Greek cuisine, with generous portions and modest prices, we were put at ease chatting cordially in the family atmosphere that reigns in this small corner of the city. Recommended for all those looking for traditional cuisine in the authentic atmosphere of the old city...already ready to return next summer.

This is a great place to eat. Stella and her staff are very warm and welcoming. The delicious, healthy, home-style food is lovingly prepared by Stella. There are printed menus at the tables but you go over to the counter of the kitchen to see what's actually being offered that day and to order. Both meat eaters and vegetarians can eat very well here. Stella put together great vegetarian combination plates for us that had some of all of the tasty vegetable dishes. On Mondays she makes a hearty delicious fish soup that is chock full of fish and vegetables. Her lentil soup is also good- we had that on a Tuesday but I don't know if she makes it every Tuesday. Good red and white house wine is available - €5 for a half liter or €2 a glass. There is also beer and ouzo of course. They give you complementary tangerines and raki which make for a nice finish to the meal. One of the two days we ate there they also offered coffee and cake on the house. You pay at the counter. They accept both cash or credit cards. They open early for breakfast but at least this time of the year close at 18:00.

Wonderful authentic Greek cafe

We visited Stella's kitchen for lunch after reading the good reviews and weren't disappointed. It was quite hard to find as we weren't expecting it to be so tiny! There is no menu but Stella comes and invites you to go to the kitchen area where they show you the food they have cooked that day and explain it all to you. We had a pasta bake/lasagna type dish and lamb in a sauce, both of which were delicious and they bring a plate of grapes as a dessert. Very reasonably priced at 20 euro for two including drinks. Highly recommend for a tasty home cooked meal.

Delicious and authentic cuisine!

Such a wonderful, authentic experience! This family-run restaurant served delicious food (I had vegetarian platter, my husband had a meat platter) that they told us changes depending on the day you visit. We loved ordering what has been prepared straight at the kitchen. They also had the kindest service, with everyone being so friendly and making the experience seem so personalized. I would absolutely recommend anyone to try this place!

First, we were welcome with a smile when we entered the small restaurant. We felt as if we had arrived in an old aunt's home. Every customer seemed happy to be there and we quickly understood why. We chose the food in the kitchen, from big pans and the choice was amazing. Then, we ate and there was nothing to add : fresh ingredients prepared with love and passion, simple recipes - always the best combination there is! I had the best beans I have ever eaten. We ended with cherries and raki (on the house) and a Greek cup of coffee. Don't try and find another place. Wait a little if the restaurant is full. It is definitely worth it.

Stella's Kitchen offers Greek food freshly cooked every day. You'll be invited to the kitchen to select your dishes. As we live in Rethymno we have visited several times and will continue to do so. A friendly welcome and exceptional value for money, We had one starter, two main courses and a large beer - complimentary mandarin oranges and raki followed. Grand total 19€.

Great experience from walking in and being greeted by Stella ,she explained how it worked and we went up to the kitchen to see what was on offer !! I chose the lamb with potatoes with cauliflower and green veggies,my husband chose the beef with big beans and rice ,we both enjoyed it ,with a carafe of wine and cake for dessert and grapes for €25 Would definitely go again !!!

As this is a restaurant highly recommended on trip advisor, we decided to check it out. It wasn't the best experience. The restaurant itself is tiny, on a crowded narrow street. Maybe it has its own atmosphere, but it looks more like a dining room with a kitchen. The food itself may be authentic, but it doesn't blow your mind. A so-so snack, not very fresh bread and mediocre olive oil. The way the food is served is quite cafeteria-like, you have to go up and choose something from the counter. They add some strange fees to the bill, a few euros per table, supposedly for availability. I haven't seen anything like this and I consider it a scam.

I just happened to be walking by and remembered that this was reviewed as one of the better restaurants for breakfast, so I stopped in to look at the menu. The lady showed me food that was already prepared and all of it looked delicious. Even though I had just eaten at another restaurant a few minutes earlier (and it wasn’t very good) I thought I’d sample a dish. I had the beef and some green beans. It was absolutely delicious! I ended up finishing the whole plate! Stella, the owner, has a winner here. The filtered coffee was also excellent. Can I give it 6 stars instead of 5? I’ll be back to sample the breakfast.
