We enjoyed a couple of coffees in the quiet square outside this old fashioned cafe/taverna where the gentlemen were sitting talking. There is also an interesting church in the square.

While searching for a restaurant that was less touristic than many in the area, we found some locals enjoying this cafe. The menu we received was very limited and not the extensive, verbal menu given to locals. We saw others ordering main dishes while we...had a platter of pink ham and dry meatballs. We were given poor service and paid too much for this underwhelming meal.More

A hidden gem with mostly locals this is a lovely place. We came here several times in August and it was such a pleasure to relax in this shady location with great coffee, cool beer and friendly service.Next to St Nicholas Church with the occasional...horse and carriage trotting past it was a very enjoyable experience. Thanks.More

Beautiful setting in the late summer evening sitting outside we decided the place looked busy so we would give it a try .They didn’t have the wine we ordered but had a alternative that wasn’t on the wine list but was the same price we...had sat for 20 minutes at this point so just agreed . We ordered our meals ,I ordered chargrilled chicken giros thinking it would be chargrilled chicken with fresh pitta and salad. I actually asked the waiter how they were cooked and he confirmed they were chargrilled . What came out was a plate of grease and disappointment . Fried chicken pieces served on a plate of chips and pitta all soaked in grease . I picked some of the chicken and left the rest. I mentioned to the waiter he said this is how they chargrill on the hot plate with oil sounded a lot like frying to me , Not how he described it earlier. If you are in Chania and wish you went to Benidorm this might be the place for you . If you want decent food pick any where else they won’t be as bad as this and won’t be as expensive either ..More

This quickly became our favourite place for afternoon beers and predinner drinks, they do a superb G&T. A real slice of genuine Crete, unaffected by the tourist trade. In the Platiea 1821 right in front of the St Nicolas' church with it's belltower on one...side and minaret on the other, this is where the locals come to socialise, eat, drink and play backgammon all day long under the shade of the plane trees. It is possible to have a memorable meal here if you choose a few dishes from the limited menu, but don't fall into the trap of over ordering. We had Cretan salad, meatballs, courgette balls and stuffed vine leaves and had a job to finnish it all. Portions are generous. Service is typically Greek and prices are low. Loved it!More

Happened upon this small cafe when visiting the church of Saint Nicholas. Friendly service provided with good mezze and meatballs. Nice way to while away an hour and a half of just relaxing with decent food and a cold drink.Thank you.

In the corner of Platia 1821, To Kafenio could be easily missed. Seemed to be frequented by locals rather than visitors, but such a find. It's simple honest food, served well, at a great price. You could wander the back streets fo Chania for days...deciding where to eat, but here for a few euros, you can find a fresh greek salad €4.50, and meatballs €4 easily enough for two. Beer and wine are cheap also. for less than €15 we had 2 rounds of drinks and great food. Good people watching place, the horse and carriages that ply thier trade in the harbour keep coming past, shady or sun, what you like the best. We went back a couple of times and were never disappointed.More

We enjoyed a relaxing lunch near the church in the nice taverna. The service was friendly and the food was fantastic, especially the meat balls. It is a bit away from the harbour and so very quiet. Thank you very much.
