Having read many of the reviews on here we decided to go for the birthday of one of our family members. When we arrived we were greeted by the fantastic setting the restaurant had to offer & completely blown away. When ordering the food we were able to pick the fish inside that was freshly caught & it came within quick time. The food itself was absolutely fantastic and based off both the location & quality I’d highly recommend to anyone However, whilst these aspects were both amazing, the experience was severely let down by the service, hence only 3 stars for the rating. It was clear that preferential treatment was given to local people over tourists. We were frequently ignored by many of the staff whenever we tried to ask for anything or get someone to assist us, the worst of which came to asking for the bill. We asked 4 different waiters, including the head waiter for the bill, to which he simply ignored us and walked away - this was made even worse when both tables of locals either side asked for their 5 minutes after, and the staff immediately cleared their tables and brought them the bill with a little digestive whilst we’d been waiting for ours to be cleared and the bill brought to us. No restaurant should ever give preferential treatment to anybody dining and should treat all paying guests equally If you’re considering going, you won’t be disappointed with the food and the setting - but please be mindful, especially if you’re not Greek, that the service you’re likely to receive will be less than satisfactory

We really fancied a fish supper and were recommended this place by a waiter at another very good restaurant, for brilliant seafood in Chania. What a better place to eat seafood than right by the sea with the water pretty much lapping on your feet. Extensive menu. Waiter invited us to come and see the fresh fish. We ordered mussels, grilled octopus, fried moray eel and parrot fish. All were proper pukka, flavourful, cooked well and fresh - moray eel was nice, as I hadn’t tried it before and as waiter had said it was a similar taste to cod - it was also accompanied with a nice garlic sauce. If you want a seafood dinner in Chania - then this is your gaff. Waiting staff were pleasant (big up Antonio) and price seemed to be fair for seafood. Recommend!

We were that impressed we visited this restaurant three times whilst we were in Chania, And every time the food was outstanding. They advise you on what is actually fresh from the days catch some of which will not be on the menu. The fresh grilled octopus and the red snapper was some of the best I’ve ever tasted and I’ve eaten at a lot of fish restaurants around the world. If you love your fresh fish and seafood you can’t visit Chania and not go to this place the images say it all.

This is a picture perfect Greek waterside taverna. Traditional furniture on a wharf with seaweed on the floor and really really busy. They specialise in fish and the menu reflected this. Unfortunately this was the problem. Our various starters were fine but the main courses were the let down. Two of the main courses were totally inedible as they were so overcooked (grilled prawns and swordfish). The house wine was only just bearable and the service whilst extremely friendly was a bit slow as they are so popular. It’s such a nice setting and perhaps we chose wrongly but we wouldn’t return.

This place is honestly so overrated. The service was very poor and slow, we had to wait for very long to even get noticed by the waiters and some of them was very rude. Everything we asked was followed by a big grunt. For example, we ordered 1 liter of the house wine but was told it would be served by 0,5 liter to start and then we would get the rest. Only thing was we could not get the waiters attention to get the rest of our wine in time (and once we did - it took an additional 10 mins for our wine to arrive). So by the time we got our wine we had already finished eating. Also, we had to pay for two servings of the 0.5 liter wine instead of the 1 liter. When we wanted to pay, we could not even get the waiters attention despite trying to do so for 10-15 mins so we had to walk inside and ask were we could pay. Also, please stay away from the grilled swordfish. It was so dry it tasted like bad chicken. The view is marvellous but I would honestly never recommend someone dining here. Such a huge dissapointment.

This was the most disappointing experience of our entire holiday. We booked a week in advance based on excellent recommendations. The view is indeed excellent- really beautiful location. What a shame about the food and the staff! We waited for twenty minutes to get some water which during a heatwave was unacceptable. The food was significantly below average, in a city where you can get excellent food in almost every corner. We had a forkful of each dish, only to confirm that it was as bad as it looked. We asked for the bill in less than an hour, with all dishes basically untouched and refusing the after-meal treat that they offer and no one even asked why or how the food was! No surprise as no waiter was attached to the table and no one seemed to care at all. The food is of course overpriced as no price should be asked for this food. Oh! Not to forget that we ordered the fried whitebait and the waiter said that they are out of it but they can make a different fish of the same size look like it. Like what?! Really disappointing- do not waste your time and money!

Located on a shallow pebbly beach near the water, this restaurant is fully booked every evening to witness the sunset. A seafood specialist, we treated ourselves to fresh calamari, octopus and a whole cod. Having said that, they offer children either pasta, chicken or pork. Very reasonable prices given the freshness of the produce. All six of us were deeply satisfied!

The location of Thalassino Ageri is quite unique - the tables are right on the sea, not in fancy way, but in a rather "rough" way. Its in an mostly deserted area of Chania and I recommend getting there by taxi. Do book ahead, and specify that you wish to sit in the "first row" (right on the sea). Food is only sea food (they have a few non sea food starters), so is not suitable if you dont like fish or other sea food. My starter (local fried small shrimps to be eaten whole) was very tasty. The main (a grilled fish) was okay, but I had better fish in Crete. Prices are very reasonable, but a bit higher than in comparable places. Still - I would totally return, as the setting is really quite unique and special.

Tholassino Ageri is a very special restaurant in itself. The location of this restaurant is spot on and the seafood is fantastic and very diverse. Try to make a reservation as soon as possible as the restaurant can get crowded very quickly. My only complaint is that the service can be very busy at times but apart from hay would absolutely recommend it but don’t tell too many people about this place. :)

Pluspoints, the location is charming and the food is simple but good. Main courses are pretty much just various fresh fish fried or grilled, full stop. It’s also not bad value- a simple dinner for four was €140 The main negative is the service, as others have said. The place is manic so service is very hit and miss, bordering on complacent as they are so popular. So our dirty plates sat on our table for 20 minutes till we asked for them to be removed, despite three waiters standing chatting nearby. They called a taxi for us (essential) but no one told us it has arrived, so 20 minutes later we are facing an angry taxi driver. Would we go back? If you can chill out enough to get over the service, then probably. Otherwise only a 60% chance.

Amazing atmosphere and good food. We ordered squid, red snapper, shark, potato fries and cretan salad. Service was friendly. I would advise going before/ during sunset, to profit from the fantastic location/view. You could also consider walking there from the city, along the shore. Especially if you stay near the city beach. It is a very pleasant walk, and takes about 20 minutes. You may not first and foremist go there for the food, But that was also absolutely not bad. And absolutely worth the extra money we spent going there (80 euros for 3 people, including wine)

The restaurant is a few minutes drive away from Chania in a unique location, with the water practically touching your feet. A beautiful setting. I called to make a reservation for 8 people about an hour in advance and even though it was a very busy time, they were able to fit us in after a brief wait. Food was delicious and fresh. We had three different types of fish and shared multiple apps. Each dish was tasty. Servers and the host were friendly and as customary in Crete, dinner ends with some shots of Raki on the house. Would love to come back next time in Crete. If you’re looking for a sunset seating, make sure to reserve in advance.

Location was perfect (little weird finding our way there but the taxidriver knew whats good) and the place was stemning. The food was magnificent, fish was fresh and perfectly cooked, we had a selection of fresh fish that was recommended to us, exceeded our expectations. The sunset was beautiful, the servers were so nice and so accommodating and helpful, house wine was so good!! Loved all of it. Going back to Crete solely for this restaurant !! 100/10 would recommend. Loved it.

We went for fresh fish and we left happy and fulfilled. The recommendations from the chef were perfect and staff was friendly and helpful. We had fried calamari which was excellent, fresh "balas" and "koutsomoura". Everything was as described by the cheff. The location is excellent. Reserve a table days before and make sure you are next to the sea.

The location itself is worth a visit. Derelict buildings, some of them being renovated and turned into "hip" places on a pebble beach. Wooden tables (with linen table cloth) and chairs set right on the "beach" and among the seagrass. Great sunset view. Service is really fast and efficient. The three of us had a variety of dishes and all were really tasty . It is a good 30 minute walk from the old town. But you pass some sections of town which are mainly frequented by (mostly young) locals. Thus, the walk is an extra bonus (and you work up an appetite going out there, and work off some of the calories which you will have gladly consumed at the restaurant).
