We visited the this wonderful friendly taverna at the end of August 2020. This was a return visit for us as we had dined here before in previous years. As always the food and service were excellent. What makes it so special though is the atmosphere if you sit outside on a warm summer evening. Klepsidra is located in Plaka on a beautiful little pedestrian only street. You can just sit back, enjoy your food and wine and watch the tourists pass by tucked away behind the Roman Agora. This makes it a bit quieter than the main thoroughfares of Plaka so is perfect if you want to really unwind and relax. Pricing is competitive too.

The experience eating here may have been the most magical moment of our time in Athens.
The environment and setting is unmatched, and the service was legendary. We called ahead to make a reservation, and when we arrived they greeted us like we were Jay Z and Beyoncé showing up. They gave us the most beautiful reserved table with a view of everything, helped us order exactly what we wanted even if we did not know what we wanted, and told us multiple times to take our time, slow down and enjoy ourselves.
The neighborhood surrounding this little “heaven on earth” eatery was also the most charming area in all of Athens. Secret beautiful walkways draped in flowers and foliage. A gentle old man sitting on a hidden corner painting the most beautiful scenes and landscapes you have ever seen. Quiet, serene away from the crazy crowded areas.
Absolutely memorable. Bucket list good.

When in Athens you don't want to miss it! This place have this pleasant vibe of a small, family run traditional restaurant. It is cosy pleased on small street just below Acropolis. The served food is delicious. We have visited this place the first and the last night in Greece. They serve the best Moussaka, that we've tried, delicate, creamy and rich in flavor! The best of the best is traditional Giouvesti, this stoll our hearts and made us dream about coming back. Very good starters and house vine. Prices very reasonable.

We were slightly disappointed with this restaurant. Although the location is very nice the food we ordered came very quickly and mine was not hot enough. The waiter quickly re-heated it but explained that it was cooked in the morning and reheated in the evening. Although it would take longer to serve I would prefer my food to be cooked at the time not re-heated. However the dishes were tasty and the drinks good. I liked that a bottle of tap water was served for free but the olives they brought without us asking were charged for. Not a cheap meal and a bit underwhelming given its position on trip advisor.

Read so many good reviews for the café/restaurant but to be honest during my visit (for coffee) found everything very average.
Location of the place and the outside tables are very nice but coffee (cappuccino) served and tea are below average. Also service is very slow as we were looking for the lady in order to pay for more than 10 minutes

This was just the place I was looking for. The wife wanted to walk around the old town of Plaka & I was starving from shopping earlier. This was the perfect place. The location was picture perfect. Also, the lemon honey drink I had recommended by our server Claudio who was super friendly & helpful. This guy was working really hard. The wife’s sangria was very smooth & not too sweet. We even ate all the fruit afterwards. As our meal we order the special chicken plate & Greek salad. The meal comes with fresh bread & olives. Everything was picture worthy & tasty. This place met all my needs & more plus was very Instagram worthy for my wife.

Paul and Louise review 29 and 30 May 2022: we visited this wonderful restaurant twice, once for dinner and then for lunch the next day. A Greek colleague had called from London to book a table and when we arrived we were treated like royalty by Georgio the owner. The food is traditional Greek food such as gyros, meat balls, Greek salad and all of it was incredibly fresh tasting and delicious. At lunch we had some excellent homemade tzatziki and taramasalata with pitta bread. The restaurant is in a charming corner of Athens just below the Acropolis. The service was superb and we were treated to a digestif and a slice of cake at the end of the meals we had there. We would recommend without hesitation.

We ate at this restaurant on our first night in Athens and then returned twice more. The restaurant is in a quiet street en route to the acropolis just far enough away from main area to make it nice and quiet. Menu isn’t extensive but ample to choose from with daily specials and decent house wine. We loved the friendly atmosphere and tasty food …..only regret was never trying the desserts that looked lovely but we were always too full….. we will just have to return soon to try them out😊
Big thanks for helping to make our trip special….

We found this place close to our hotel and we were so happy we did! It has great reviews, super cute patio and slightly away from the crowds. We didn’t feel pressured to come here like other restaurants try to do when you walk by. The waiter was so friendly and service was fast and great. We ordered Greek salad, meatballs, tzatziki and bread which was very good! Meatballs come with rice and was a bit heavier than I was expecting for lunch but other than that great quality food! We would have come back if we had more time

Cute and quiet location hidden behind the Roman Agora. Perfect Greek terrace to feel a sense of vacation.
The food was excellent and well advised! I had the lamb in lemon sauce, very tasty and melting of the bone.
My vegan friend ordered by mistake the Mousaka (with meat). The waiter kindly took the plate away and suggested an alternative.
About the service, friendly and carrying, you feel welcomed and not just another tourist.
Best advise: have a table slightly after lunch time (2pm+) and you will have the area to yourselves.

We started by ordering two fresh orange juices, which were nothing fresh but more like a bad industrial supermarket orange juice. It started off badly...
Then my friend had a gyros which was of no interest. I ordered a shrimp dish which was one of the main dishes, 8 small frozen shrimp on a bed of salads..nothing else! Tasteless, bland.
The icing on the cake was that the waiter blatantly lied to me when I asked for an explanation for the orange juices. The only smile we got was to “lure us” to the restaurant afterward it was curt and aggressive. It really feels like a wallet and nothing else.
Worst restaurant experience we have had in Greece and that's it for me.

This is a must go to restaurant in Athens. The service was unbelievably friendly and warm. We came upon this cafe as it started to rain and thought it would be a good time to take a break for dinner. We sat outside under the awning while it rained. We ordered one beer and it continued to rain. We ordered dinner - Greek salad, cheese pie, and spinach pie - all delicious - and it started raining harder. We ate dinner and it started to monsoon. We ordered another beer and we’re really enjoying ourselves. The waiter came over and turned on the heater, recognizing we might be cold. Then he said you can’t leave until the rain stops even though o think they wanted to close up for the night. They were so nice. The wind started blowing the rain under the awning. So they set up a table for us inside, complete with flowers on the table. And then to top it all off, they gave us each a free glass of grappa. Awesome evening from warm people.

Very nice little restaurant in Plaka neighborhood, we had eggplant salad, mousaka, staffed peppers and tomatoes and youvetsi, everything was delicious. Staff friendly and nice. Despite the restaurant was full we got our order fairly fast.

Klepsidra Cafe is an excellent place to enjoy traditional Greek food in the heart of Plaka. Excellent service of the waitress, tasty food and good price, beautiful view on Athens from a part of their terrace. We were so happy that we went back several times during our stay in Athens. I definitely recommend !

This place is bad, even by the standards of the Plaka (Athenian restaurant food seems to improve proportionately with distance from the Acropolis). An utterly cynical tourist trap, all the worse because the trap has been set in a location slightly away from the main concentrations of tourist trap restaurants, & you think you’ve escaped. You haven’t. Terrible food, terrible wine (which the waiter lied about) Resist the temptation, & the ‘authentic’ Greek welcome, do your sightseeing, & then walk 10 minutes downhill, somewhere north of Monastiraki Square. Less scenic, better food.

Plaka
Due to its proximity to the Acropolis, Plaka remains the area where the majority of foreign visitors stay and play. Its attractive features include small squares, some notable museums and the beautiful Mitropolis cathedral, as well as a host of places to stay, eat and drink. Its pedestrian zones make it a pleasant place to escape from the city’s notorious traffic. Adrianou and Kidathineon Streets contain a number of souvenir shops, offering classier items than you will find in the Flea Market. The most rewarding section to explore is the upper reaches towards the Acropolis itself, where many old stone houses with tiled roofs have survived. Up here you can find leafier corners and the odd quaint taverna with unobstructed views of the ancient rock.
