What to do on a cold but sunny winter afternoon on Athens? Go to Monastiraki, of course, and wander round the shops between there and Thessiou selling anything from antiques to junk. When it's time to eat what better place is there than Cafe Avissinia...More

The restaurant is really nice, quiet and typical especially at the ground floor. The food tastes very well (try the fava bean cream) and the staff are very kind. Good choice! And it is not touristic!

We live on Rhodes and consider ourselves rather knowledgeable regarding Greek cuisine. We ate here this evening and I must say that the quality of the ingredients and products is noticeably of a higher standard. The attention to detail regarding the seasoning and cooking was...More

Cafe Avisinia was a great lunchtime dining experience for my husband, our friend and me. Our friend has a Greek heritage though he lives abroad now. He was very impressed with the menu and the dishes he selected on our behalf. We had a delicious...More

I came here for lunch, the food is very tasty and authentic Greek. We sat on the terrace right next to the shops from the flea market. So it has a fun atmosphere.

Oh my, to sit on a rooftop terrace, with a spectacular view of the Acropolis, enjoying great food and wine, life doesn’t get better. There was a strike, museums were closed for the day so we found this gem. The service was attentive, our meal...More

This is a really cute restaurant with a fabulous view of the Acropolis. We were on the rooftop and it was a little chilly so make sure you take a scarf or jumper just in case but it is a very atmospheric and romantic. The...More

This is a great place to eat and if you have been disappointed with Greek restaurant fare prior to your visit you will be pleasantly reassured that you have merely been unlucky so far. At the Avissinia they really know what they are doing and...More

I’m surprised about some of the comments saying that the food was ordinary here. Out of all the taverna-type meals we had this was the best. Yes, it is touristy, as is every other restaurant in this area. What set this meal apart for me...More

The space is attractive with a nice terrace with views but the food was disappointing for the most part and the service was brisk and somewhat inattentive. The waiter tried to get a tip out of us by default assuming we were foreigners and would...More

Monastiraki
Monastiraki is a souvenir-hunting enclave with a
difference. Apart from the dramatic backdrop of the
Acropolis, its network of alleys and pedestrianized
streets surround the remains of both the Greek and
Roman agoras, adding the quaint concept that this is
where the ancients also came to shop. Named after the
tiny monastery church at its center, Monastiraki
Square is a lively spot by day or night, with street
