This restaurant is in a great location and has extremely friendly staff. We stopped at the tavern every day for afternoon drinks and an appetizer. The spinach pie is excellent. Dinners were also superb and reasonably priced. The grilled sardines are exceptional along with all the fish dishes.

As Philhellenes for many years, we were first brought here by a local friend and have returned several times with our family. The food is simply superb - the kebabs, lamb, veal and vegetables are some of the best we've ever had. The welcome is genuine and warm - our waiter even went with our children, first to the periptero,... More

Recommended to me by a friend in Singapore we finally found it after meandering our way through the Plaka. We were happily not disappointed! The seafood was excellent as was the lamb. Best of all the service was superb! Special mention of our server Alekos who made us feel like family and right at home!

Chose this restaurant on the recommendation of several nearby shopkeepers and it turned out to be a perfect luncheon spot. It sits on both sides of the sidewalk so when eating outside as we did we had a wonderful time people watching. The owner/manager was delightful and made sure we understood the menu. We enjoyed the moussaka greatly but the... More

I loved saganaki, one of the best I had in Greece. Salad good as in most places, house wine was ok. Chicken souvlaki very tasty (nicely marinated), however weird way of serving - along with chips and rice..... Waiters were friendly, atmosphere - busy street in Plaka, not for the romantic dinner, but good for a casual evening.

Had a wonderful dinner here with my husband and in-laws sharing grilled bread with olive oil, Greek salad, pastitsio, fried calamari, baked feta, and drinks. I think our total bill was about 40 Euro. How do you choose from the myriad of places to eat in Plaka? One good sign is where the locals go and Taverna Byzantino is one... More

Located on one of the top people-watching streets of the Plaka, this modestly priced, high-value eatery may be the perfect introduction to Athens for first-time visitors.

Staying in Plaka

Neighborhood Profile
Due to its proximity to the Acropolis, Plaka remains the area where the majority of foreign visitors stay and play. Its attractive features include small squares, some notable museums and the beautiful Mitropolis cathedral, as well as a host of places to stay, eat and drink. Its pedestrian zones make it a pleasant place to escape from the city’s notorious traffic. Adrianou and Kidathineon Streets contain a number of souvenir shops, offering classier items than you will find in the Flea Market. The most rewarding section to explore is the upper reaches towards the Acropolis itself, where many old stone houses with tiled roofs have survived. Up here you can find leafier corners and the odd quaint taverna with unobstructed views of the ancient rock.
