I loved the food and wine here. We were a group with various dietary requirements and we were all satisfied with the choice. My steak was particularly delicious, I cooked it myself on a stone. Great staff too, very friendly.

I decided to try this restaurant out after a long day of walking around the city centre. I am a solo traveller and wanted somewhere that had authentic food but was still in the city centre. I was sold by the reviews that said that...locals frequented this place. The prices are a bit higher than the other restaurants in the area but I feel that is completely justified in the quality of the food. I was their first cover for the night having arrived at 6.10pm. I requested to be sat at the back so I could enjoy my solo dining experience away from foot traffic. That was a good choice as I had the entire back garden to myself for some lovely photos. There are a few painted doors in the area and a leafy design perfect for pictures. I had the Black Scabbard "Espada" fillet with Banana and Passionfruit Sauce. This seems a weird combo but it worked perfectly. It was served with crushed potatoes and veg all assembled well on the plate. I asked the waiter to recommend a wine to go along with the dish and his choice was spot on. I felt totally comfortable there as a solo diner and I highly recommend going.More

This restaurant was such an amazing surprise! We saw that they had lots of vegan options for me to choose from, so I was already pleased, but when they took us to the outdoor seating in the back of the restaurant, it felt like we...were in an enchanted garden in the middle of Funchal! We ordered sushi (vegan option for me, regular for my boyfriend) and it was amazing--presentation and the taste! The sparkling red fruits sangria was also amazing, along with the desert. Definitely recommend for a romantic night or a night with the family when in Funchal. Will definitely return!More

Visited Santa Maria restaurant two times in February. Had black scabbard in mango sauce with fried bananas - one of the best dishes we have ever had. Delicious, very fresh and beautifully served. Great customer service, both Diogo and Suzy were very professional and polite....Had a really nice chat with them too.More

We stayed at Santa Maria Hostel, and took the opportunity to dine here, just a flight of stairs below our room. Guests at the Hostel get a discount on the restaurant. The service was very fast, and every waitress was super nice, but not too...pushy. We order two risottos, which were amazing - and in very generous portions, I couldn't even finish mine! The Bolo do Caco for an entrée was also yummy. In the end, we were offered an also very generous serving of Madeira Wine. All this plus drinks for around 35€. Definitely a sensible price, considering the quality of both food and service and the location of the place. I highly recommend.More

Very nice service. Food was very good, but the meat seemed not to be from premium category. All in all it can be recommended

Me and my spouse had lunch and dinner here during our vacation in Funchal. Both times very friendly service from all members of staff. We had excellent sushi and ricotta ravioli for lunch and for dinner espada fish and pesto risotto. Everything was very tasty....The atmosphere is relaxing, no loud music. I can really recommend this restaurant.More

The food was very good, we had sushi and beef steak. People are very friendly! Not expensive for what you get. They have lots of wine, wich are also very good. The only restaurant in the street who doesn't 'pull you in'.
