Absolutely Outstanding.

Situated on the Lido, Leeno’s is both busy and buzzy with great atmosphere. All staff are friendly and very keen to please and service from Leeno himself was perfect with efficiency and humour the order of the day. Portions here are large so we shared tasty garlic bread prior to a platter of succulent chicken with good chips and a salad with our dislikes of cucumber and raw onions omitted as requested. Dessert choices were home made chocolate mousse and passion fruit creamboth of which were first class. Wine list is sensibly short with some good bottles all reasonably priced. Leeno’s is very popular and offers outdoor or indoor seating so it’s best to book in advance. The provision of top quality food alongside superb service is the aim of the management and they most definitely succeed. A delightful evening and yes, of course we have booked to return. This is a Funchal must do.

Worth finding, best to book

We discovered Leeno’s at the end of the Promenade de Lido walk 3 years ago, and have come back every holiday since. Food is excellent & copious, and the wine they recommended to go with our scabbard fish & seafood salad for our first meal this holiday, was delicious and very reasonably priced. Our second meal included tuna on the stone. It was a huge portion and has to be the tastiest tuna we’ve had in a long time - sweet & melt in the mouth. A friendly family business we highly recommend!

Some wonderful meals

This restaurant was close to our accommodation and we ventured in on spec one evening. We were not disappointed then nor on two further visits over the last two weeks. The staff are engaging and the menu has a good choice including some Madeiran favourites. Stone cooking is available and bibs provided ! We tried several dishes on our three visits and all be consistently good and well presented. Even the vegetables were 'properly'cooked. Whilst the location is not frontline it has sea views and the food,service and value for money more than compensated. A real find for us !

Not impressed

The restaurant was very busy when we arrived at 7pm and most guests appeared to be returning visitors known to the staff so we were hopeful of a good meal. Sadly we were mistaken. My husband ordered soup to start (not hot and tasteless and I ordered the Lapas which were fine. We both ordered the Espada which, sadly, tasted of burnt oil as it was cooked (we presume) on an open grill that was too hot. This left a bad taste that neither of us could get rid of. Guess this is not a restaurant to eat fish as most customers appeared to be eating Steak (of some kind) cooked on the stone and seemed to enjoy it, as far as we could see. Not for us I'm afraid, but the reviews are mostly good so don't be put off if you like steak.

Disappointing

We stopped in this week, having had wonderful food on a previous visit. This time it was very disappointing. The chicken wings were cold and tough. They were wimming in a tomato sauce that was lacking in flavour. I don't believe they had been cooked fresh. As a main, I had the black scabbard with prawns. The prawns were chewy and.over cooked. The black scabbard was also over cooked in places. My husband had the beef espetada. This was mostly good but was also inconsistantly cooked. He ordered medium rare but it was rare in places and well dine in others. We were asked if we enjoyed the food by the server and I explained about the disappointing starter. That was completely ingnored, not even an apology. We decided there was no point in mentioning the mains and just got out of there as fast as possible to buy desserts and drinks elsewhere.

Superb restaurant

Following a gap of 5 years we returned to Leeno’s restaurant and visited 3 times during our weeks stay in Funchal for one lunch and 2 dinners, reservations are essential. We were warmly welcomed by the staff, the fillet on the stone is superb and rather large and is served with salad and jacket potato, we also had the traditional espetada cooked to perfection, chicken cordon bleu which had a surprise of a boiled egg in it together with the cheese and ham most enjoyable. This is a busy very popular restaurant which I highly recommend

Best fillet steak ever!

Oh wow, what can I say. We went to this restaurant after a lovely couple informed us how wonderful the food and staff are here, And it did not disappoint. I had fillet steak on a hot plate and my husband had a huge tuna steak also on a hot plate. It was just amazing, and at a very price, cost at least double back in the UK. We went again before out holiday ended. Going back in 3 months and I'm counting down the days to come here again.

I had expected better.

Service just ok. I ordered a small entre that never came. Main dish vegetarian pasta. It was served with lots of melted cheese on top instead of some grated parmesane which would have made it lighter and better. The dish was heavy and not very tasty. I saw most portuguise people had grilled chicken with chips and salad. It looked good , maybe it was the dish of the day. If it was I never heard about it.

An Absolute Must

Went here twice during our holiday and food was impeccable both times. Service was great - waiters very friendly and attentive, wine recommendation was spot on. Some food intolerances in our party and Leeno’s catered for it perfectly, portion sizes are generous and prices are reasonable. The grilled black scabbard with prawns and the chicken espetada were both unbelievable! Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Funchal.

We had to cancel a booking but remade one by phone on the day we ate, it gets very busy. We had a table outside under an awning so comfortable even later in the evening. Staff were friendly and efficient. I had the limpets to start, which were well served and pleasant as a change. This came with delicious local bread with garlic. The scabbard with prawns was very good and came with lots of vegetables. The chicken Kiev was excellent. House wine is very cheaply priced and drinkable. Thoroughly enjoyed our experience here and would recommend.

Outstanding, best meal of the holiday

Just brilliant. Went here on a friend’s recommendation & will be going back tomorrow! Lino, one of the partners in Leenos was our waiter & he was lovely, very attentive & showed me how to cook my steak on the stone (which was divine). My mum had the grilled salmon, also delicious, with a delicious bottle of house red & a shared starter & desert for 51 euros outstanding in every way. Thank you for the best late lunch of our holiday

stunning steak on a stone

Booked a table so we could try a "steak on a stone" meal , the starters we had were Sautéed mushrooms and sautéed shrimps cooked perfectly and not small portions. We ordered fillet steak on the stone for the main course 18.50 euros we were not prepared for how much meat would turn up, At least 3 times as large as a fillet from say Miller and Carter. Amazing value. The service was first class and all the waiters had a good sense of humour and appreciated a bit of banter. Overall a delicious meal and amazing value.

Best meal of the holiday

Cannot fault this restaurant however you must book in advance, we just rang them on the morning and they were able to fit us in, we saw a lot of tables turned away. Steak on a stone was fabulous, really good cut of steak and less than 20 Euros Our waiter was also very friendly and the restaurant is in a good setting. Definitely the best meal we had in the week of our holiday

Incredibly dissaponting

I really expected this place to be good becouse of its popularity, but let me tell you, its only because of the meat on stone everyone come here. I orderd the fish with prawns, it was worse than the White fish you get at school, No taste or sauce, the only spice i could tatse was curry... And it was barely salted. The prawns was also completely tasteless, i did not even know you could ruin prawns... the service was good though..

Lovely restaurant

We booked a table, having not been able to get in a previous evening because they were so busy, and we are glad we did. The waiters are really friendly and the food was served quickly and absolutely delicious. The portions are huge and my steak was particularly well cooked and dishes were served with fresh vegetables. The bill was very reasonable and we would definitely return to this restaurant again. Highly recommended!
