We shall eat again at the Ritz as the food and staff were excellent on Christmas day. Staff also recognised us from having sat outside for drinks during our stay in Funchal and they welcomed us to the restaurant which was nice. The only thing against our lunch experience is the very slow service due to the number of people there. Two tables of people, each on either side of us sat complaining about not being served as they waited for their orders, we also thought it too long a wait for plates to be removed and the next course being served. Normally service is very good. My husband and I concluded that too many people were being catered for, tables were also extremely close to one another. Not a fault of the staff but of the owners. Praise for the staff.

Visited for an early dinner. Sat on the balcony which had a great view, but was told we couldn’t sit on a table with the best view as they had a reservation. Then watched other people sit at the table an hour later, who had not reserved either.
Took ages to get drinks, despite it being empty on the balcony (only one other couple up there).
Prawn starter was lovely, so had high hopes for the fish and chips main.
Main was ok but asked for salt, pepper and ketchup twice. Waited to only receive pepper, but my food was getting cold so ended up going inside to take some salt off another table. Never got the ketchup. After the second time of asking the waiter, he spent some time putting candles on empty tables instead of getting me salt and ketchup, which didn’t impress me.
Go for the view and the starter but don’t expect great service.

How can you avoid this strange Icon? We’ve been living next door for six weeks and have been trying to avoid it. Not at all.
Reminds me of real buildings in Porto, and it’s not at all kitch....
They serve lousy G & T’s , bad ice creams, soso coffe, and it’s not very cool to sit around outside, very touristy, although it’s a beautiful place , Avenida Arriaga! Sometimes bad service outside.
As soon as you venture upstairs it’s a different story. Better service, better fish and chips. Thanks to the lovely girl upstairs!
In my opinion service and food has gone down since our last visit in 2016. We’ve been around three times in 2020.
The high tea was not sublime, but good, according to my wife.
Pies and fish and chips ordinary.
Still a nice place. Difficult to rate this place......

The Ritz is a nice place to sit and have a drink and watch the world go by. A shame about the staff hence only 3 stars. On our first meal the waiter was really helpful and cared about the questions regarding my food allergies. On the second visit a different waiter showed no understanding and was even joking about being celiac. I felt awkward and when my fish arrived and was not cooked through and mentioned it, no reaction from the waiter or apology. We have been many years on holiday in madeira and I was very disappointed with my last visit.

Three or four times during our week in Funchal we walk to the Ritz for a coffee, shandy or orange juice and often their famous scones. It is a comfortable place to sit and people watch under cover of their huge parasols. Good service and good value.

if you want an excellent meal with great entertainment this is the place on a saturday night.Shaun Lesley is a legend on the island having spent many years entertaining at the casino with her own show, singing and dancing. The evening includes all wines and costs 45 euros per person. A great way to spend an evening in Funchal!

We enjoyed a delicious meal at The Ritz one evening and sat outside watching the world go by. My husband choose the Traditional Fish and Chips that we had heard so much about and it did not disappoint. I decided on The Cottage Pie which was equally delicious and more than I could manage as the portions on both meals are very generous. Don’t forget to leave some room for deserts, they were amazing.

This place looks lovely, it was very busy so we decided to have lunch here. We firstly ordered a Coke with no ice-which came with ice and a Sangria. I had Prawn Ceaser salad which had 4 prawns on and my wife had a chicken wrap with fries. The chicken wrap was no better than what you get in a cheap pub chain in the UK. The lettuce on both meals was brown in places and wilting. The wait on food was long. I never mind waiting if the food is good but it was very underwhelming and over priced. I never tend to fall for style over substance but today we did and left disappointed. My wife asked for mayo with her food which never arrived, no salt or pepper offered either which is really unusual when abroad. Service is always better than the UK, but not here. Looks lovely, music was lovely but it was a big fat disappointment.

This Ritz has an appealing vibe which drew us to sit down on the front terrace with live music playing and the pleasant look we looked forward to our lunch. Our drinks came fairly soon but that's where it ends. We found the staff not only unfriendly and hostile to us but to others around us and after waiting for the ordered food (a salad) for 35minutes, and politely asking the waiter who shunned us, we said we'd leave, the waiter slammed the bill down and we left. A waitress actually yelled at us when we asked for an al a carte menu 'THERE, THERE' she yelled pointing to a small menu with photos (our mistake!). A waiter humiliated a woman when she tried to speak a little Portuguese. The staff need some customer service training as their attitude is appalling and losing business for the owner. Take your patronage elsewhere.

We did order some lovely Sundaes but on the board they show the price of €2.95 but in the menu no price. At the end we got charged €6.95 per sundae. Upon questioning they said the price €2.95 was for takeaways only. Very misleading.

My son and I went to The Ritz for our traditional Christmas lunch, it being one of the few places in Madeira that was offering a typical British Christmas dinner. It was delightful and a real change from the offer at other restaurants. Yes, I think there was a staff party underway when we were there but it didn't affect our enjoyment of the event - indeed it added to it. There was quite a (socially distanced) number of customers, including Portuguese, all of whom seemed to enjoy the British fun! The meal was delicious and I was offered additional helpings of Yorkshire puds and potatoes. Great fun. Really reccomended.

We booked a birthday afternoon tea on the terrace for 4 people and the booking was confirmed. On the day of the afternoon tea the venue once again confirmed that dress code was casual. On arrival we were told that the terrace was closed and had been closed for a period of time due to covid. They offered to serve the tea on a table in the pedestrian street. At no time did they advise us that the experience being sold was not In fact available. We obviously walked away and I would advise anyone thinking of booking afternoon tea at this venue not to. shame on them.

This is my favourite cafe in Funchal and I come several times a year. Unfortunately this year, instead of lovely live music we have Christmas music blaring …. While a musician in the pavement behind is playing beautiful classical musi. I asked twice if the music could be turned off so we didn’t have two types of music competing with each other. They turned it off for 5 mins only and it was back on blaring alongside a tv showing F1. Since when was this a sports bar??
Also when I first arrived I asked if it was possible to do a special happy birthday icecream sundae for my friend… you know how sometimes they write in chocolate sauce? Well they said no they couldn’t do that!!
I’m sorry but such a noisy disappointment this time (along with the vegetable based squirty cream.
Sorry for the two stars but you used to be a Five and how do you know when you disappoint on service if we can’t explain the difference?

Hi, visited place today what was advertised as great live entertainment with fantastic food.
I have to say very disappointing, invited family for our 15th wedding anniversary.
Food absolutely basic I mean to serve a mozzarella ball sliced with tomato and sprinkled with pesto and call it a salad is well exaggerated.
Fish or stake with no actual flavour and dessert like from 2 star holiday inn on Christmas Day.
Now THE entertainment, I have read that the owner was involved in preforming on World stages like Vegas and Moulin Rouge - how had she allowed this street performances to even be there. I have been to Moulin Rouge, Broadway or West End and Yes those shows are far better and far more expensive but...
If you are looking for good cousine and good entrntaiment go to Old Town on weekend to one of the small fish restaurants and listen to street performers I can guarantee food will be much better and entertainment too.

We had lunch at the Ritz on a very rainy Sunday so it was popular and after a short wait were seated under the canopy. Food was nice - we waited 45-50 minutes for the food which was OK as we enjoyed a drink and watched the rain and passers by! Good location. Although Service and staff were not overly friendly or efficient, we can now say we’ve been to the Ritz whilst in Madeira!!
