We arrived here just before 9pm and just a few other customers, but staff made us very welcome and we weren't rushed at all even though we ended up being last people there! Sat outside at tables with lovely traditional Madeiran multicoloured table cloths, and given some Madeiran garlic bread to savour while we chose from the menu. Waiter recommended a... More

The atmosphere was great and the service from the staff 1st class. It was so good we went on three occasions. The fish was great and also the salads. Next time we go to Madeira we will definitely visit again.

Amidst the hundreds of restaurants on this foodie street, we tried this one and had a lovely meal. We are forever on the search for tapas, which really doesn't exist on Madeira as I know it. Instead we opted for several starters, which are always much bigger than uk ones. We had Guacamole and corn chips, Shrimp in butter, and... More

Another very good and local restaurant in old Funchal. Fresh fish in abundance and plenty of choice for meat eaters. The skewer of mixed fish and king prawns was excellent, so was the wine and service. Little creativity around accompanying dishes and deserts though. A pleasant dinner al fresco.

The trouble with Funchal is there are so many restaurants to choose from and I must say we were pleased with all the ones we visited but the Dona Joanna was exceptional, quality of food, the cooking skills and the extremely reasonable price plus the very pleasant staff members, we had our last meal there before returning to England today,... the grilled sardines with salad wasn`t a very good meal at all, very dry and no taste to it. my octopus meal was ok although on the chewy side.

We ate in this restaurant three times during our week's stay as the staff were friendly and attentive and the food was good. Twice we were offered the 'fish of the day' at a fixed price and not by weight as is the usual custom. Good food at a reasonable price served by very pleasant waiters.

Stopped for lunch my husband had a lovely toasted sandwich and I had traditional Madeiran tomato and onion soup - both were delicious and very reasonable. Staff were friendly and attentive. Lovely steer with many restaurants and dimr of the famous painted 100 doors. Went back for a second visit and sampled the traditional local drink called poncha - locally... More

Lunched here four or five times on our first visit to Madeira. Excellent service, good range of local dishes and wines. Outstanding value for money in the opinion of our group. We would recommend the fish skewer with prawns or the scabbard fish cooked in any of the local styles, washed down with the house white. Finish off with coffee... More
