Found this restaurant via trip advisor and so glad we did. The service was exceptional, all the staff from the Maitre d to the waiting staff were friendly and knowledgeable. As a family of four the grownups went for the set menu which included drinks and for the standard of food we were served was excellent value. A special mention to the scallop and beetroot starter and from the children the duck main course was superb. There was added ambiance provided by a saxophone player who was also friendly - the excellent staff of il Vivaldi had obviously had a been a great example. Will definitely visit again when we come to Funchal.

Booked online to get the 50% al la carte reduction but were directed upon arrival to their special menu that permits creation of your own menu from a la carte and came with wine for €37 a head. Every course was delicious, nicely paced, good wine selection a tasty vino verde, robust red Dao and a Bual with dessert. No visit to Funchal should omit a trip here. We’ve been to Funchal lots but missed this but then we’re told is only two years old. Special mention for the attentive service especially the m’aitre d.

We had dinner here on our second night in Funchal, and it was so good we booked to return a few days later. On both occasions we were highly impressed. Service from the management and staff was excellent, and the ambience was perfect. Smart casual dress was appropriate and the whole atmosphere was relaxed. We found the pricing to be reasonable, although we are told the locals find it a little expensive (there are probably a number of places to eat more cheaply, but nowhere near as good). The menu has some great choices, and the wines we had were very good. The “concept” menu is a really good deal. Three courses of your choice from the a la carte menu, mineral water and unlimited wine - all for only 37 Euros. Every dish we ate there was nicely prepared and presented, and we enjoyed every mouthful. In our view, a faultless experience.

Having heard so many great reviews by some local friends, we decided to give it a go to this restaurant. In fact the decor and location of it is beautiful, the staff is extremely helpful, nice and take the time to do some circunstancial conversation with all the clients. We were there on a very busy evening and we could tell they take the time to make sure you’re confortable and happy. The starters were really nice (marinated salmon) and arrived quite quickly but we had to wait around 30 minutes for our main courses, my husbands octopus curry was phenomenal but my scallop and shrimp risotto was a complete let down, undercook rice and no scallops in sight. This was really disappointing as we had high hopes and compromised the whole experience. Considering this I thought it was a bit overpriced.

The food was excellent 5 stars - but the service can best be described as random shambles. We had booked for the €37 Valentine special menu for 4 people. Arrived and they were clearly not ready for us and cobbled together two tables outside. Where was our reserved table clearly not in the linked inside dining areas as the largest area was being set up for the evening and the first indoor space only had a table for 2 left unoccupied. Next we were told we couldn’t have the special valentines menu. Then we received 4 menus without explanation of what the current lunchtime special consisted of. In fact you could have anything off the al a carte menu including house wine. But my booking said 50% off - are that is only the al a carte menu - I went for the 50% off and our friends went for the lunch time special at €74 for two people. We all had starter, main and desert. Ours came to €38 for two with the discount off. Our friends paid €74 but got two glasses of wine each. We had sparkling water and gin and tonic in our price. No napkins on the table and when we asked for them we were given a handful of paper napkins plonked in the middle of the table. It the nice linen napkins that the inside diners had. The waiters tried to be amusing but their initial response had spoilt the day. Most disappointing Valentines lunch.

I am travelling solo in Madeira and booked a table here last minute via The Fork app (50% discount) for a quick bite to eat at dinner. There is a formal dining room and a more casual bar/terrace area in which they serve the same menu. I arrived for my table at 8.30pm electing for the casual area. There were a few waiters milling around but no one came and greeted me or showed me to a table. So I sat down at a table of my choosing. What then followed was verging on comical. I was ignored until I asked a waiter to bring me a food and drink menu which he did without a smile. I was then ignored again until I called over the same waiter to ask whether it would be possible to order a glass of wine. He said he wasn't able to take my order but did not give any reason. So I attempted to order a glass from two other female waiters again without success or any explanation for why they wouldn't serve me. After around 15 minutes, at which point I was both confused and irritated in equal measure, the head waiter arrived and I was eventually able to order a glass of wine and the grilled octopus with garlic puree which reassured me that I was indeed in a restaurant (which I was beginning to doubt). The food itself was fine but nothing exceptional - the octopus was well-cooked but the accompanying "garlic puree" was an insipid white sauce which tasted of precisely nothing (and certainly not of garlic). There were a few vegetables scattered on the dish and a small baked potato with cheese and bacon, none of which was anything to write home about. At the end of the meal, the bill arrived without the 50% discount being applied so I had to ask for this to be processed. I called over the head waiter and asked for an explanation as to the appalling service I experienced at the start of the meal. To his credit, he apologised profusely and said that it may be due to language barriers, but that seemed odd to me as: (i) this is supposedly an upmarket restaurant; and (ii) when the waiters gave me my food they did speak English. In the end I was given the whole meal for free. I'm still not sure what is going on at this place, but it was the worst dining experience overall I've had in Madeira. They need to take a leaf out of the books of the restaurants Akua and Kempo by Chef Julio Pereira which offer exceptional food at good value with charming service.

We were holidaying in Funchal for a week and came across this restaurant from Trip Advisor reviews and were not disappointed. We booked a table online and when we first arrived we were initially disappointed. We climbed the steps from the street to find no diners outside, we stepped in and again no one around. We were greeted and whilst being shown to our table, passed through another two empty dining areas and started to worry a little but then in the final part of the restaurant it was packed with diners - thank goodness!! We were offered 2 menus and opted for the 3 courses inclusive of wine. The food was very well cooked and presented beautifully. The quality was great and the wine just kept coming! Fine dining for sure at very reasonable prices. We enjoyed our meal so much that we decided to return later in the week to celebrate my husband’s birthday. Thanks to all the staff for making his night special!

Really excellent, especially bearing in mind the difficulties faced in these Covid 19 times. Service was great and the maitre d’ was very attentive, nothing was too much trouble. The dining room was really beautiful as was the outside terrace. We were seated at a lovely table by the window, overlooking the sea. As other reviewers have mentioned we would also recommend the Concept menu which we thought was outstanding value for money as well as a delightfully presented, delicious meal. I left my sunglasses behind but they had been kept for me and I was able to pick them up a few days later, thank you👏👏👏👏.

Attended this restaurant on what I believe to be one of the busiest evenings of the year, the Madeira Carnival. Despite the large number of covers the restaurant was presented in a carnival theme and looked lovely and felt really calm and welcoming. I have to mention we were greeted by Parlos the Maitre d’ Who was very professional, friendly and informative with the menu etc He made us feel very welcome and relaxed. The two waitresses, Maria and Soraia were excellent, efficient and extremely warm. The wine waiter Rui was so friendly and had very good knowledge about the regional wines of Madeira he took very good care to ensure our glasses were topped up with wine and water when appropriate . All the staff go about their duties in a calm and pleasant manor that is a pleasure to see. The food in this restaurant is excellent, it tastes as good as it looks. I have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant at all. The overall ambiance is very welcoming. Thank you one and all.

An excellent first visit to Vivaldi. Very busy restaurant with great atmosphere and an outstanding Maitre D’ Carlos whom we knew from his time at Quinta Bela Vista , Mozart and Casa Vizinho. He is a real character who looks after all clients with efficiency, courtesy and good humour. Unsurprisingly his staff are very professional and smiley.😄😊😀 The concept menu (€37 ) offers a wide choice with any starter, main and dessert included with water, bread, amuse bouche and decent wines...great value and great quality. A starter describes as sautéed shrimps was in fact large prawns which were very tasty. Mains were salmon with tropical sauce and grilled parrot fish with mashed potatoes and perfectly cooked fresh vegetables. Splendid desserts were passion fruit soufflé with vanilla ice cream and a trilogy of sorbets. Verdict excellent and already booked to return in November.

How wonderful to find il Vivaldi has reopened while on a distanced walk around Funchal. Greeted warmly and so happy to find the outer balcony to be pet friendly! Hugo was welcomed and treated to a bowl of water. We chose the dish of the day (fish) which was beautifully served, portion size appropriate to a mid day lunch - lightly cooked with a lovely selection of vegetables. And ... accompanied by the obligatory glass of house white wine ! Ice cream dessert was amazingly tasty and a good way to finish the meal. This has always been our favourite restaurant in Funchal as it never fails. Always a professional genuinely warm greeting, High quality produce, expertly cooked and presented within a top quality environment ! Never less than 100% Thank you il Vivaldi !

I never write reviews but I had to for this restaurant, please read! Myself, husband and two sons visited this restaurant twice last week, something I never normally do, and both times we found the food and service to be impeccable. The older gentleman Carlos greeted us both times with such warmth and hospitality. The dining room was lovely and reminded me of an immaculate classical 1930s dining room, I was surprised to find out the restaurant was only three years old, it seemed a lot more established than that. The food was classic Mediterranean fare. The food arrives with such flair and is served covered with cloche domes (stainless steel domes) they are dramatically removed to reveal the food. This is accessible fine dining for all, at its best, not pretentious and very reasonably priced for the quality of ingredients and execution in cooking. A great restaurant for couples and friends. Everything we ate was superb, the highlights are the scallop and prawn starters along with the salmon gravadlax. For mains, I tried the duck first time round and scallop & prawn risotto the second, without a shadow of a doubt the best I’ve ever eaten, cooked to perfection and so tasty. Of course, the duck has to be pink and the risotto wasn’t too Al dente as I find in some restaurants. My husbands' steak was perfectly cooked and so too was the rack of lamb. All sides i.e vegetables and potatoes (mash) are included. My 8-year-old son didn’t eat from the 3-course special menu offer with wine, an absolute bargain for €37 euros per person. We asked for grilled chicken with fries and vegetables, this was also presented beautifully. The desserts were to die for, the passion fruit soufflé and creme brûlée were delicious. The cheesecake was also superb, and the chocolate brownie is a winner. The staff are very proficient and totally serious about their craft. Hands down the best restaurant in Funchal and would give most fine dining restaurants in London a run for their money.

We only realised, when we visited the website to book, that there was a Valentines Special on, - and what a 'special' it was. For the same Formula (sometimes referred to as Concept?) price as usual a special menu had been printed and the restaurant had been beautifully decorated with hearts and rose petals. Each lady received a single rose. The food was not 'gastronomic' (the normal criterion for my rare 5* reviews*) but it was very good (and plentiful! -the duck I took away in alu-foil provided enough protein for our joint lunch the next day.

We decided to visit this restaurant for lunch in Funchal after reading the reviews. We were made to feel very welcome. The service was exemplary, friendly, thoughtful and efficient but not rushed. We had bread with butter oil & tapenade to begin. I had tuna for my main course and my husband had risotto. Both were beautifully presented and delicious. The recommended house wine to accompany the meal was very good and very reasonably priced. Desserts were also good as was my husband’s coffee. I had mint tea and was delighted that this was made with fresh mint- so much nicer than the ‘tea bag’ variety that is served. I even got a short lesson in Portuguese- ‘Obrigado’ I wish we had discovered this restaurant earlier in our holiday as I’m sure we would have made a return visit.

For those not familiar with the 'concept', essentially you pay a fixed price for your meal which includes three courses and drinks. It is a growing theme among Funchal restaurants. Vivaldi has all the options here - a la carte; fixed price for three courses and choose your own wine or the complete experience. We went for the latter - three courses including wine. The food is excellent and the wines are very good also which a component that often lets other places down in this format. Add to that a nice setting and great unobtrusive service and you have the reason I think this is probably the best, now based on two visits.
