Based upon the opening part of the review in the Lonely Planet guide, I wasn't sure what to expect. In the end I disagreed entirely and found the staff to be excellent along with the food.
I arrived late (6pm) and the restaurant was already full with names being taken and hungry patrons being not even allowed in the door till a table was available.
The wait is worth it and the food is excellent. Just be aware they will only accept cash. 3 dishes, dessert and 2 drinks for 1 came to 45 Euros.

A very small location, not pretentious, but certainly with excellent small bites that are changed daily. We had two different fish tartare that where delicious, fried zucchini flowers filled with goat cheese. The wines offered are of good quality and decent prices. I loved this restaurant and the concept. The overall cost is affordable and aligned to the service and quality, the only thing that should improve is the payment: only cash!

Serving Lisbon for ten years, and consistently full despite a no reservations policy, A Taberna da Rua das Flores takes Portuguese Ingredients seriously. So seriously, in fact, that Chef and owner André Magalhães sources much from his own gardens, makes his own Olive Oil and only sells Wines from local vineyards including those of his wife. What all this means for those lucky enough to get a seat is wonderful food with context but no pretense, and a global perspective derived from Andre's travels atop an encyclopedic knowledge of the country he calls home.
Not far from Largo do Chiado, a cash-only policy and long lines justified by prices far outpaced by Products, décor is reminiscent of old Taverns while the chalkboard menu changes daily such that there are virtually no “signature” dishes.
A self-taught Chef, though various stages in Michelin-starred Kitchens have given Magalhães an uncanny knack for showcasing Portugal’s bounty, dinner begins with Bread and Olives followed by whatever is freshest at the market that morning.
Difficult to highlight just one dish, this day’s menu unlikely to ever be replicated again, early highlights included an elderly Oyster served alongside Seaweed foraged with it followed by a lightly poached Scallop and raw Marlin nearly orange in color thanks to its diet of Langoustines.
Pouring Wine at fair prices, a crisp White holing its own against Grilled Lettuce topped in Sardines plus intense Garam, whole Conch proved a very special treat before moving on to crunchy Frog's Legs in Sweet Potato Starch and an African Satay atop the Greens.
Serving 2018 Espera Castelão prior to a fried Cube of Cheese, the smoke exaggerating spicy Tomato Jam, Cherry became more prominent with Eggplant sticks followed by Beef Tartare and a decadent Pork Rib.
Not forgetting Taberna da Rua das Flores’ Mackerel Tartare, a “signature” that André admits changes regularly, one might be surprises how well powdered Sea Lettuce pairs with roast Pig, and to finish do be sure to ask for Goat Cheese Brulee with Figs if it is available.

We enjoyed the food so much we went back again. The chalkboard menu has about 12 or so small plate selections with generous portion sizes. The carpaccio, “pink” marlin, flank steak were just a few of the dishes we enjoyed, but the menu changes all the time based on what’s fresh. We went with 4 small plates each time and it was more than enough. Service is great, and friendly. You will most likely have to wait a bit if you go after 6:30 pm and there is no room inside to wait. A very nice young man comes outside regularly to add your name to the list. Because the place is small, it seems they do prefer you wait outside the door until they come out to take your name rather than going inside. This is common at many of the smaller Lisbon restaurants due to space constraints.

Best food in Lisbon! They have a different menu each night depending on what food they get delivered that day. All of the food is very fresh and personal. The service was incredible and very friendly. We got there just at the right time because it started getting very busy afterwards and people had to wait for a hour and a half which is worth it! I would go back there in a heart beat! Delicious!

I cannot understand how anyone thinks this restaurant should even be in business. They give you a minute to order off a blackboard and at an average of $15 a plate you get weird food, oysters mush with seaweed “oh, you must eat the seaweed” says the waiter, yeah great.
Ok garlic prawns, overcooked chicken nuggets, teriyaki supposedly. They don’t do salad of any kind, offer stale bread and odd paste spread and some olives. We spent $100 US there and left hungry. And, there is no charm there either, just a crappy old joint with a dirty bathroom, hard chairs and broken lighting. Some one wrote one insane review and I, along with many others who actually waited in line to eat there, believed it.

Our experience was at least disapointing. Since the restaurant is rather small they make you wait for hours on their "waiting list" in order to get in. In this way they somehow create very high expectations. There are people waiting outside for hours like this is some 3 stars michelin restaurant. We 've been there on a Friday and we had to reschedule for Sunday. After they asked us to return later and after waiting almost an hour standing outside after the scheduled time, we finally got to sit. They brought us some cold bread and some olives without asking us as a cuver (which is rather common-as soon as the bread is fresh and warm). A lady came with a board with over 10 options written in Portuguese. She just read the board quickly to us and at then she gave us some time to recall the dishes without having a menu in front of us. We ve ordered some water, they brought us tap water and they charged us for it 2,50€. We begun with the scallops which were tasty (good quality but not something special in the recipe from the chef). Tuna tataki was also good quality but again nothing beyond the common recipe. The third plate was eel with sushi rice. Again, eel was fresh and tasty (although very little), sushi rice was wrongly cooked and without any additional flavour from other ingredients. The last plate, veal tartare was an excellent meat which was destroyed from a huge amount of paprika on top. Served on a tasteless rice cracker and paired badly with other ingredients such a lot of olives, this dish was the worst. In general the quality of products were very good, the chef however went very safe with the recipes. The dishes are overpriced and the way the charge people for tap water while they make bills over 70 euros shows how cheap the owners are. Also, you can only pay by cash and without receiving an official receipt (a piece of paper with prices written by hand) which is suspicious. The reputation and reviews of this place are very misleading, we regret the money we spent there. Pricy "gourmet" dishes are only justified when the chef has something original to suggest.

Was here for lunch. Lucky to get an immediate table for two. Restaurant has room for no more than 20 (if that) and does not accept reservations. Doubtful more than 4 will find seats. Children yes. Limited menu only on a portable blackboard but wait staff is bi-lingual. Seating is tight since restaurant is long and narrow. Food is good once it arrives but not worth a long wait. About E20 - E25 depending upon how much you order.

we loved our meal at taberna da rua das flores–perhaps the best food we had in Lisbon. we ordered the duck liver and endive salad, the meat and beans stew, the swordfish with mussels sauce, and the local red wine, and all were superb. Great value and charming ambience, too.

The best meal of our stay in Lisbon. A bit of planning needed - cash only and they don’t take bookings so arrive early, get your name on the list and go for a drink before returning when you’ve been told a table will be free. Large tapas style portions - we had four between two which was plenty. The stand out was a fantastic veal carpaccio, perfectly seasoned with a burnt garlic mayo, on thin slices of crisp toast. All washed down with a nice bottle of local red. Total bill 61 Euros, exceptional value for the quality of the cooking and the ingredients, all of which are local.

Lisbon is a city constantly on the move. Trams, taxis, tourists twist and turn down cobbled streets, barely stopping for breath. With one exception. The tranquility and nervous hum of those waiting outside Taberna da Rua das Flores. Surrounded but Lisboas fire trucks, it is easy to miss, were there not an ominous cloud of patient smokers fogging the entrance. With a no booking policy firmly in force, the nervous anticipation of whether a seat has your name on it, whether you're Madonna (who used to call these streets her own) or a litter picker, is no guarantee. Expect a queue and get there early, otherwise you'll be cast aside like thousands before you. Somehow, two forgotten souls named "Smith" failed to arrive, so I slipped through the net like a Portuguese octopus that somehow avoided an inevitable grilling. With three waiters effortlessly choreographed, gliding through the room, and narrating the menu to perfection, the atmosphere was in perfect balance. Smiles, 'Mhmms' and 'clinks' were all to be heard, not a grimace in the place. The food, exceptional. We were fairly safe with the order, foregoing the pig's head "this time", as the pictures will show. The clams, which tasted so exotic that they must have been chard in the belly of Água de Pau and shipped over that very day, were a highlight. I also now have a taste for olive oil and chocolate mouse, not separately, but combined, with a salt referee keeping the flavours within the rules. This hallowes Taberna is highly recommend, unless you have all the patience of TikTok viewer, as good things surely come to those who wait. I would return as soon as I've joined the masses and done my turn bustling through the city. I give it 72hrs till I'm back. And thanks "Smith", all I can assume is that you've twisted your ankle on the city's cobbles like the hoardes hobbling on crutches. Dont mind if I obriga-do. G

We visited on the 29/02/20. Two couples and I was nervous as I recommended going... No pressure! 😬 but they didn’t disappoint! The food and drink and atmosphere was amazing! My husband asked for the WiFi code and the waitress said... “we don’t have WIFI just good food and great music” 🙌🏻 boy was she right!

This place was highly rated and it remains a mystery as to why it is. After waiting 25 minutes in the rain we were seated in a dark and overrated “tasca”. The seats are horrible and you will become sore within 15 minutes. The menu is very clumsy, as it is written on a chalkboard and they translate it to each table. I know Portuguese and I still couldn’t read it. Highly inefficient and uncharming. After getting the food there was nothing that tasted very good and we couldn’t wait to get out of there. On top of that they only take cash which is very inconvenient with this price range. Many customers had people going down the street to an ATM getting money to pay. Don’t waste your time or a meal on this place when there are so many better places.

I'm perplexed by the 1 star recent reviews on here. We were recommended this place by friends in the UK and it was well worth the 20 minute wait outside, after all what better sign can there be that somewhere that people are happy to wait outside in the street to get in. The food was served efficiently, was piping hot and freshly cooked. Everything we had was delicious. Highly recommended.

This was probably the most disappointing meal in Portugal. Unfortunately they were very unaware of allergies and gave us food that made me sick. If you have a gluten or other food allergy I would steer clear. They did not seem to care that they gave us contaminated food and continued to do so multiple times after discussing it with the server. I’m sure this could have been a good meal, but they ruined our night and took so long with service that everything was closed by the time we could pay our bill. Indifferent service and overrated dishes.
