Jose Avillez looks at haute cuisine as a form of expression. At the Belcanto he shares his inspirations, emotions and concerns through his culinary representations and illusions. Each dish tells a story and sets out to stir the emotions of those willing to try it."
2 MICHELIN Stars: Excellent cooking, worth a detour!
Belcanto boasts a superb location in the Bairro Alto (Chiado) district popular with tourists, on a corner close to a former convent damaged by the large earthquake that devastated the city in 1755. In his culinary empire’s showcase gourmet restaurant, chef José Avillez offers a modern à la carte and a single tasting menu entitled Belcanto that takes guests on a journey of gastronomic discovery in a dining room divided into different spaces, alongside a chef’s table in the kitchen. Avillez explains that all his dishes are influenced by Lisbon’s different light, its maritime shoreline and its distinct districts: in the words of this celebrated chef, “cooking is our very own fado, and our own form of expression”. He recreates recipes that recall our childhood memories, such as the classic “grandmother’s rice pudding” (arroz-doce da nossa avó), which boasts a sublime delicacy and a truly special flavour. Interestingly, the napkin provided for dessert is in the shape of a sleeve, recalling the way the chef once wiped his mouth on his sleeve as a child!

We had heard positive reviews for this Michelin starred restaurant and decided to give it a try for my wife's Birthday, as we're staying in the Chaido area.
The service was smoothly professional from our greeting to our departure. Extra touches everywhere include "white glove service" at table side and an invite to tour the kitchen between dinner and dessert!
We chose the a la carte option as the tasting menu is too many courses for us. We also opted for the wine pairings.
With that, we were served "pre-appetizers" on an amazing display rack (delicious), followed by beet salad and shrimp dish (appetizers) and steak plus roast squab (our mains).
We finished off with chocolate dessert as well as an amazing "Tangerina" (tangerine flavour 3 ways in a frozen sphere)!
This was definitely a splurge but also an experience we will remember and talk about for a long time.

Our daughter and son in law made the reservation for 7:45 and we departed about 11:45. Hard to believe that it lasted that long but we hardly noticed until the end. We decided to do the tasting menu which consisted of at least 10 servings which were remarkable in taste, ingredients and presentation. A team of 4 attended to us and the host invited us to visit and view the kitchen before departing. An added bonus was a little cake in the shape of a candle that was lit for my wife and I to blow out. It was than sliced 4 ways for each of us. My thanks to the staff and of course daughter and SIL for a memorable dinner.

We were only able to secure a table for lunch but the restaurant offers the same menu options during lunch and dinner service. We opted for the 10 course tasting menu and shared one accompanying wine selection. The menu and the accompanying wines represent a journey through Portugal, interlaced with stories from the chef's childhood. It's a combination of signature dishes (such as the famous golden egg which was inspired by chef's favourite childhood TV series) and newer, seasonal dishes. As we are both allergic to shellfish, the menu was adapted accordingly. The courses were announced with the help of beautiful cards with drawings and the main ingredients of the dish - at the end, all the cards were presented to us in a sealed envelope (with real sealing wax) and the date of our visit stamped on the envelope. This shows the attention to detail but also the storytelling. Our meat course was the most refined dish of suckling pig I have ever eaten. If I had to pick a favourite dish, it would probably be a tie between the beetroot starter and the pork pre-dessert (an almond cookie icecream sandwich with crackling popcorn and caramel sauce, which was presented in a very whimsical way and was somewhat reminiscent of the bacon and maple syrup craze in the 1990s). The staff was super professional but still very friendly and accommodating. A true 3 star experience!

The restaurant’s interior was charming and the staff was very well trained. There was an ala carte menu and a tasting menu but we were told that we could only choose one or the other due to the serving times. We chose the ala carte.
The food choices were too exotic for my tastes. I don’t eat fish, caviar, liver, brains, seaweed and these foods are not to my liking. The presentation was exceptional. The taste of the beef tenderloin was average. The desserts were, in my opinion, better than the meal.
Overall I found the restaurant to be overpriced and with foods I don’t care for though I was told that there is a long waiting list to get reservations for dinner.

We were allowed to sit at a beautiful table by the window. The bright rooms have a certain understated elegance and style, suitable for such a "feast of the senses". The decision was easy for us, the tasting menu with premium wine accompaniment was the one for us! A cross-section of creative dishes from Belcanto and their cuisine. After a glass of champagne and small items that were very delightfully presented (the goose liver ball - heavenly), we were able to "lean back" and enjoy the menu with perfectly matched wines! Our waitress was extremely nice and friendly, as was the rest of the service. We were allowed to switch between a bit of Portuguese and English in order to better understand the interesting and precise explanations of the dishes and wines. Before the actual menu started, there was a selection of bread with different types of butter of sensational quality (the best "broa"/corn bread). You could easily write a novel about the eight courses of the menu! Just this much: perfection in every detail on all plates, whether sauces, side dishes, fish or meat. This requires full attention not only during preparation, but also when enjoying! Before dessert there was a small, very tasty "mess" in the form of ice cream. For this we were asked to swap our napkins for a kind of sleeve cuff, with the request to wipe our mouths directly on our arms - for the sake of the boss! It was a special pleasure and a highlight for us to be able to spend our 25th wedding anniversary at Belcanto.
Thank you again to the whole team!!!

As we stepped in we were brought to our table in the wine tasting room, but unfortunately another couple entered with a two year old…don’t get me wrong as I love kids, but at a pancake house…not this restaurant. The staff saw our concern and moved us downstairs to the main dining room, where we had a terrific server named Muhammed, who couldn’t have been nicer or more knowledgeable. He directed our pallets to the right dishes of suckling pig and steak. I can’t say more than what others have already stated about the dishes, other than they are some of the largest servings I’ve ever seen in a Michelin restaurant, but at the end of the day, it’s the staff and kitchen that play the music of the food, and what a symphony you shall experience!!

We have been to the top restaurants in the world like Central, Disfrutar, Asador Etxebarri, etc and BelCanto as far as food did not disappoint. Nelson, our Maître D' was exceptional. We reserved the Chef's Table at the restaurant to have the ultimate culinary experience. The only thing missing from the entire experience was the Chef himself who was expediting in a kitchen right next to us but within the 3+ hrs that we were there never even bothered to say hi or introduce himself. However, we saw a group of French/ French-speaking patrons whom he was very much obliged to shake hands with and show around the kitchen. Could it be because we were a Chef's Table made up of Asian patrons and Latinos like ourselves that we were not given the same introduction or warm welcome from the Chef? I sure hope not. I have never felt the need of a review this long, but I just felt that if you pay for a self-proclaimed "Chef's Table" at a top tier, #25 restaurant in the World, the LEAST the Chef could do is introduce himself and wish the guests a nice meal. I have been to the #1 Restaurant in the world and never has the Chef been so pretentious, hence my review. Other than that, the food was great and Nelson gave a great service.

This was a good meal. But in no way did it deserve two Michelin stars or its place in the 50 best list. A couple dishes were great. A couple average. Service was solid though very long gap between main and dessert. One waitress tried to get me to turn around when I was going to the restroom as she brought out the petis fours and another waiter huffed when we asked them to be boxed as we were too full. But what really diminished the experience for us was the wine pairings. We had the 150 euro premium pairing with the three course meal. The wines were outstanding. The pours were tiny. So small that I couldn’t actually enjoy it with my beef main dish as I was rationing such small sips. Ultimately we had barely more than one normal glass of wine across the three courses. My wife joked that she’d never left such a high end meal sober.

Plus: cooking is perfectly controlled. Perfect service.
The Least: Exorbitant Awards
Lunch menu 200 € while in Paris in some restaurants of palaces with 3 Michelin stars we have lunch menus at 95 € / 125 €
For Portugal, the Award Value is extravagant, especially since the decor is not that of a Palace.
Addition to 2 with 1 bottle of Mason and a glass of Portuguese red wine (35€) 630€.

Had the most fantastic experience at Belcanto . The food was superb , matched only by the outstanding welcome and service we received . Nelson made us feel like we were the only people in the restaurant and ensured the complete translation from chef to plate . Special thanks to the hostess ( we didn’t catch her name ) for facilitating a kitchen tour , a valuable insight into the care and precision of the whole team.

My visit to this Michelin restaurant presented a blend of positives and some aspects that gave pause. The food menu showcased creative offerings, complemented by impressive presentation. Service was attentive until what they said was supposed to be an optional 10% service charge was added to our bill without first asking us. While I understand the practice and felt the servers deserved this, it felt uncomfortable not to have the choice to decide on this additional charge. While the taste of some dishes didn't align with my preference due to their heaviness, their presentation remained noteworthy. The ambiance was pleasant, contributing to a relaxed atmosphere. Overall, a place to consider for its unique dishes and ambiance if you're looking for fine dining in Lisbon.

We went with friends for our lunch at this exquisite restaurant. Knowing the exalted reputation of Bel Canto, we booked it several weeks ahead, and our anticipation was well rewarded. The elegant interior as we entered was simply a preview of our world-class experience. We were first ushered into the spotless kitchen to be welcomed by the chef, and then followed what we all agreed was one of the most superb meals we had ever had. The a la carte menu at lunch included an array of exquisite starters, followed by course after course of culinary gems. The emphasis on the beauty of each dish was matched only by the superb taste and complexity of each course.
There aren’t enough adjectives to describe the level of service and culinary creativity and expertise Bel Canto offers. It’s expensive, yes, but well worth the cost to enjoy such a world-class experience.

Belcanto lived up to its hype and high expectations. The menu was inventive and delicious. The service was first class. The ambience was demure, classy, but not pretentious. I brought my family and everyone had a wonderful time. They even created a special menu especially for my 7 year old son - such a kind gesture.
Some of our favorite dishes included:
1) The foie gras sphere wrapped in gold
2) The tuna belly and uni tempura tart
3) The Garden of the Goose that Laid the Golden Egg (a signature dish of the restaurant) - a soft boiled egg, likely cooked sous-vide, draped with gold foil and topped with crispy hairs of bread with active carbon infused with black truffle and hazelnut. Really aromatic and super delicious.
4)The suckling pig
5) The strawberries/litchi/rose dessert
6) The Three Little Pigs dessert, which was an ice cream sandwich served with thinly sliced Iberico ham and chicharron crunchy bits
If you're looking to splurge a little and taste some of the very best in Lisbon, look no further than Belcanto!

This was my first two-star Michelin experience, and it was VERY disappointing. The food and service were subpar, worse than my experience at one-star Michelin restaurants.
The food was okay, nothing spectacular but maybe it’s just not suited for us, which is fine. The atmosphere was sterile. But the worst part was the service.
1) From the beginning, our waiter had requested that we notify the staff if we need to step away from the table to use the bathroom so the plates would not be brought out when we are away. The way it was presented to us was somewhat condescending. What is this kindergarten? Is it not the waiting staff’s job to observe when we step away? It puts undue pressure on the diners.
Things only got worse from here.
2) After the first course, we had some crumps on the table. They were not cleaned. Few more courses later we were served bread, we had some more crumps accumulating on the table. We watched 2 more courses come and go after the bread, and the crumps sat there staring at the us and the waiter. Finally, my friend asked for a sweep, and the waiter did the most inexplicable thing. He cleaned my friend’s section and left everyone else’s untouched. Maybe he thought the rest of us wanted to savor the crumps for later?
3) Throughout the meal, we also had the pleasure of being accompanied by 2 fruit flies that would occasionally drop by to have a taste of wine and the food.
At end of the meal, I expressed my concerns to the service manager, who came off a little defensive regarding point 1, apologized for point 2, and told us they have weekly fruit fly cleaning regarding point 3. We were offered a free drink or tour of kitchen which we declined. Nothing short of cutting our bill would have made up for the poor experience.
In addition, one of my friends had a substitute dish and a portion of the dish was left out, and only brought out when we had asked for it. The fish dish was changed to a different fish (seabass) last second, which was different from the menu.
We thought to ourselves that maybe we had unreasonable expectations, but we dined at Alma the day after, and the experience was night and day. If you are in Lisbon and want to try one of the two-star Michelin restaurants, PLEASE do yourself a favor and book Alma instead. Crazy considering the two restaurants are next door to each other.

Beautiful room with well-spaced tables. We all ordered the 195 Euro Classics menu that allegedly had 11 courses, but was actually 14. We started with an elderini, a small martini like foamed drink, followed by a brioche with cod liver and trout roe which was fabulous. Tuna belly and broth, a golden sphere of foie gras, Algarve prawn with roasted chicken skin, carrot with pine milk and olive, Lupin bean (this was the only course I wasn’t wild about), lobster Caesar salad, poached egg, unbelievably tender and delicious hake, suckling pig, followed by several small desserts. Entire dinner took a little more than 3 hours. Service was friendly but highly professional. We did not order the wine pairings, but chose a white from Alentejo (Palpite) which served us well. Lots of “surprises” throughout which are fun to guess. We also received a printed menu to take home. Only disappointment was the 10% service charge (which did not surprise us) was actually 17% even though they claimed it was 10%. Just bizarre—we can do basic math even if the waiter could not. It was a wonderful dinner and we elected not to protest. We concluded they hike the service charge for Americans.

Chiado & Carmo
The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.
