The honest review. I appreciate 2/5 is a poor rating and I do it with a heavy heart and mixed feelings. The food is slightly below average but in relation to the price, it becomes poor in terms of quality/price ratio. They only accept bookings...for the menu, which is 3 courses for €60 per person including free flowing house wine. The starters were acceptable. The tuna pate was actually good. We drank the white wine and it was perfectly acceptable. We had the sea bream fillets and they were below average. Disappointed that the skin wasn't crispy, and the filets were full of bones. Regarding the desert. The options were flan, chocolate log (it tasted like shop bought to me) and my wife had an orange - and it literally was a sliced orange. Regarding the food, the true value of it, in my opinion in Portugal would be at best €60 for 2 (€30 per person) and that would be generous. The competion in that area offers very good quality food for very reasonable prices. So what about the fado? Well that was the reason I was there and it was good. The chap that played the Portuguese guitar was remarkable, the singer was good, the whole spectacle was a real experience and the ambience is, in my view, second to none. Doesn't what justify the price? Well no, and there is why. The fado starts at 11pm. During covit, if there are free tables, you are allowed to come in for a drink when the fado starts. Pre covid (and I'm assuming at some point in the future) you were allowed to come in and have a drink to see the fado even if there are no free tables. The brutal and honest advice is: skip the food and go over for a drink at 11pm...More

We arrived at 9 and sat down for a delicious three course meal, enjoying all three courses with empty plates throughout. Then the fado started around 11 which was very enjoyable - The venue is small and the singing was great and a fantastic experience....You are welcome to come just before 11 for the fado but might not get a seat.More

Went for the Fado, so I can't comment on the food, but the service was excellent, the Fado was beautiful, and the atmosphere was intimate. Highly recommend!

This is simply the place to go if you really want to experience fado music. During the evening the doors are often close so you have to wait a moment for a break between songs. Musicians play till very late, often till the morning 🙂

We loved our dinner at Mesa De Frades. The restaurant is not right on the street so you need to know where you are going to find it. The place is small and beautiful and the servers are very friendly and accommodating. They take special...care to ensure you will enjoy your experience. The food was delicious! This is a go-to place to hear late night fado, too.More

We were referred to this restaurant for some local fado by another restaurant we enjoyed earlier in the week. It did not disappoint. It is a set menu, with wine included for a cost of 60 euros per person. This includes 3-4 courses plus alcohol...plus fado performance well into the early hours of the morning. Excellent ambiance in the old building with old azulejos on the walls and very good sound quality for the live performances. A great experience!More

Although my wife and I only arrived in Lisbon the evening before, after a long flight from Melbourne, the Fado performance was wonderful. The dinner before the performance included a number of typical Portugese dishes, including a salted Cod dish - this was well made...and well presented but unfortunately we found this to be an acquired taste (our taste, no fault of the restaurant). The service was very good and friendly.More

My friend and I were recommended this place to hear some late night, authentic Fado music and it didn't disappoint! Even though we didn't have any food so I can't review that part of the restaurant. My friend and I arrived late and ordered some...drinks from the bar and enjoyed the amazing fado music on the recommendation of a tour guide we had earlier in the day. You must approach the doorman and he will check that you can be let inside because the musicians play in front of the entry door. The music was fabulous and they played for hours. Even though we didnt have food we eventually got seats at a table, about 30 minutes into the performance. I highly recommend this place for the musicians and fado music.More
