I had the shrimp salad and grilled grouper. Antonio was my waiter and did a fantastic job, great sense of humor. This is a cute little restaurant just off the street. There are a lot of seats in here and it can be warm but the small menu is very good. Would absolutely come back again sometime.

Back in the city after a couple of years I was keen to revisit this nice family run place. Prawns with garlic, muscles with onions and Shrimp Soup excellent. If you fancy some meat, that's very good too. Pork with cockles comes with nice home fries. A mention for the steak on a hot stone, excellent meat that cooks in seconds... More

This is simple Portuguese cooking at great prices. The waiting staff were friendly, helpful and good fun. They recommended a great wine to go with our food. I had steak on a hot stone which was a good theatre dish with great quality meat (very filling) and my partner had sea bass which was beautifully fresh, well cooked and full... More

This was our favourite meal we shared during our entire trip to Portugal, which is really saying something. We ordered the mixed fish for 2, and the house white wine, and everything tasted so delicious. The staff were amazing, joking with us despite not speaking much English (and our complete lack of ability to say much more than hello, please... More

The staff at Alpendre really made the whole evening for us. So funny and warm and obviously enjoying themselves. Even if the food had been average I would recommend it based on this alone, but the food was fantastic! I would especially recommend the 'steak on a hot stone' which you cook yourself at the table - delicious and fun,... More

We stayed in Alfama three days and ate at Alpendre three times. The food, the service, the atmosphere were all excellent. Highly recommended.

Went here the last night of a week long trip to Lisbon. We wanted authentic Portuguese. Wow this placed really delivered. We had tried Taberna Portuguesa and Taberna Tosco which are both really great but Alpendre has the true local feel. It's off the main tourist drag which is great. The service is through the roof. Antonio really took care... More

We have enjoyed the atmosphere, the food and the hospitality. It was a local and delicious. We had the sardines which were cooked perfectly and the soup was different and tasty. The waiters made us feel like we are locals as well and treated us warm heartedly.

One of the better meals I have had in Alfama. No nonsense restaurant with excellent staff members. Meals are really cheap and could serve me and my girlfriend both!

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighborhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
