We arranged the Volcanic picnic with Maria about a week before we arrived. We were staying in Furnas already so we drove to her home (got a bit lost but that was because out off-line map was not too reliable) to pick up our basket....What a beautiful wicker basket filled with wine, bread tucked into personalized material bags, bottle of water, 2 oranges from her tree, cutlery wrapped in ribbons, lovely metal plates, 2 wine glasses, 2 water glasses, table cloth and a large antique woven blanket to sit on. The pot was filled with Portuguese sausage, blood sausage, chicken, beef, pork, carrots, cabbage, kale and potatoes. The smaller pot was our chocolate cake. Both pots were placed in a cotton sack, ready for cooking. We took the pots back to Furnas where we paid 3 Euros for a cooking hole. The government staff open the hole, drop the sack in and cover it up. We returned 5 hours later and they pulled it out. There are several picnic tables at the park so we chose one close to the water, covered the table with the table cloth and laid out the best meal ever! We enjoyed our wine while dining at sunset. We returned the basket the next day and Maria showed us her amazing commercial kitchen. We will be returning to this island and would like to join Maria in a cooking experience in her home next time. Thank you Maria!More

Maria provided an authentic Portuguese (Azorean) cuisine for my girlfriend and I, in an outdoor park in Sao Miguel Island. It was very good and tasty! However, we had so much leftover food, wine and other beverages. She is very interesting, easy to talk with,...and provides a lot of knowledge about the dishes of the Azores. Good job Maria!More

The experience was unforgettable and very memorable. For our Canadian family it was amazing to rekindle our azorean roots through participating in a traditional meal of the islands. The furnas were fantastic to visit and the hot springs were amazing to experience. If your looking...for something for the family and a learning experience. Highly recommend.More

On our first day in the Azores we had a 10 hour tour with Maria Pic-Nic - we were very disappointed with what was provided. We arrived at Maria's home at 10:00 am and then toured her run-down garden/farm in the back of her house...(needs LOTS of work). We then prepared the meal by cleaning and pealing and cutting the meats and vegetables. We were never told want we would be doing for the next 10 hours! After preparing the meal we then drove over 1 hour to Furnas to bury the pot of vegetables and meats in the ground. We then had to wait 6 hours and we were told to go find something to do for those 6 hours. Terrible planning and organization! I would strongly NOT recommend this activity while in the Azores.More

We just returned from Sao Miguel and took a cooking class with Maria in her lovely home. This is not just a class - it is an experience that you cannot miss! She welcomes you into her home and you walk the garden and pick...the vegetables you will use for the meal. Our group had four kids and four adults and she expertly catered to each of us. We sat and ate a delicious meal and talked with her for what seemed like hours. We learned how to make a great meal, kids were riveted by the garden and cooking lesson and we enjoyed amazing afternoon with in an Azorean home. This was definitely one of the highlights of our trip.More

Whilst on holiday on Sao Miguel we booked a stew (cozido) cookery session with Maria at her lovely house in the north of the island. After an interesting tour of her expansive garden we set to work making a banana cake and meat stew. Maria...then gave us full instructions on how to cook the stew at the Furnas Lake hot springs. After five hours of cooking the stew was incredibly tender with some great flavours. Maria is patient and passionate about the Azores - a delightful lady.More

First day we were scheduled for a pic nic in the Sete Cidades area by the lake and it was raining, but she found the only covered picnic spot and is was a magical place in a moss covered forest by the beautiful lake. Then...oh my what a spread of local Azorean delicacies we had never had before, pineapple and bean pastry, tuna stuffed deviled eggs, the king of cheeses, fava beans and spicy chorizo, cinnamon bread, so much more and local line. Then the next day we met her at the Ponta Delgado market, picked out fish, beef, herbs, veg, potatoes, cheeses, then went to her new house in Fenais de Luz for a cooking class. We toured her new fabulous garden, made a lunch of all Azorean specialties, like Abrogado fish soup and a fish and potato stew, beef with cinnamon and chorizo, rice pudding and more. Sampled liqueurs, made by her parents. Felt like we were eating at a friends house. This was so special, best experience of our whole Portugal trip. I highly reccomend Maria for whatever you are looking for in the culinary department!More

Maria was so friendly and knowledgeable about the local vegetation, and culinary traditions. We felt so welcomed into her home. I would recommend her cooking class to anyone even the least bit interested in Azorean cuisine and culture. A must-do activity on the island!
