I first went to this place in 1984 and it had the reputation of the best piri piri in town. So when in the area I was keen to see if it was stillthere. We were so excited to return and it didn’t disappoint from the delicious slap up Chicken meal we had with amazing homemade sauce and simple salads , to the unique old world atmosphere and brilliant charismatic service , it was voted by my boys age 13 and 15 as the best meal Out we had

Amazing experience. It was a Sunday, for lunch. A french lady, our waitress, was really competent and careful of us. We noticed the restaurant was full but she still took time for us , with charm and elegance. The food was excellent. We ordered some chicken piri piri, their speciality, came perfectly cooked and spiced. And some lulas, rarely that testy. We could feel, even it was a rush, a kind of a family atmosphere between people working there . We highly recommend the place.

Called in at this restaurant after a visit to Mt Foia. Friendly and welcoming. Sat on the terrace and had chicken piri piri, chips and salad with a 500ml beer and half a bottle of vino verde., preceded by olives and Portuguese carrots with bread. Lovely food and a great waitress/ owner from SA; very bubbly and efficient. Arrived at one and only another couple there, but by 2:15 it was full including a party of 10 with 2 young children. But they coped and very one seemed happy. Our typical type of Portugal lunch, informal but chilled too despite the crowd, including the €30 bill.

Well they said on Google it was open from 8am serving good from midday, and at the restaurant it said midday but it actually opened at 12.40. We arrived at 11.30 and were served a water and a coke. While we waited we enjoyed the most amazing views from the mountain top to the coast. At 1pm we were served a great meal of frango piri piri, batatas fritas and tomato salad followed by an apple pie and a carob and almond tarte. Well worth the wait. Come here, maybe after 1pm!

Three years ago we had an amazing meal at A Rampa so we were anxious to return for the scrumptious piri piri chicken and fresh tomato salad. We heard it was a new owner but decided to give it a try. That was a mistake. Chicken was tasteless and barely warm and the tomatoes were regular store bought and not the delicious ones from the local area. These had no taste. No one was at the restaurant and finally 6 people arrived but everyone seems to have heard to stay away. Piri piri sauce was regular store bought and not the homemade piri piri we had last time. Very disappointing so be warned it’s not what it used to be. Not worth the trip up the hill.

We booked a table for 9pm, we arrived at 9:15pm and were told that as it was already past the hour, our reservation was cancelled. We later realized that the owner had sent us an email at 9:10 pm saying that it was 9:15 pm and the restaurant was closed. In fact, the restaurant was empty and looked quite disorganized. We ended up going to another restaurant which, despite the time and the fact that we didn't have an appointment, welcomed us with great friendliness and professionalism.

As residents of Monchique, this is our local restaurant. Over the past two years, it has gone steadily downhill. The owner wants to sell and this is reflected in the investment in both kitchen and waiting staff. We had hoped, with the Covid closures, that more effort might be made to attract and retain custom, but no. Like many restaurants, the menu has been reduced, but whereas other local restaurants aim to ensure the highest quality, A Rampa doesn’t bother. We requested Sardine pate with the couvert. Bearing in mind that this comes in individual tins, this should have been an easy request to fulfill - but no, they were closing in an hour (this was at 1pm!) and didn’t have any left. The Piri-piri chicken, which used to be a highlight, was undercooked and bloody around the joints. But the worst was the pork fillet with apple sauce. The pork had clearly been cooked previously and was sliced up, made into a kebab and reheated on the grill. Inevitably, it was dry as a bone. Monchique pork is a specialty here - this was the driest pork fillet I’ve eaten anywhere. The only good thing about the meal was the bottle of white Alentejo wine recommended by the waiter, who still remains surly and unwelcoming, despite the need to attract customers. At €13 a bottle, it should have been standout. We came away unhappy again despite our hopes that things might have improved. After yet another disappointment we have finally agreed this restaurant is a lost cause.

dear Mrs Lyn i am very sorry about the result of your last visit to a rampa. with the covid we are having some problems with supplyers and it often gets us to the point of running out of material to serve. we did indeed made a shorter menu, specially in this time, so we can aim on improving the quality, witch did not happen with your chicken sadly but fortunatly not often we never ever pre-cook pork loins or wathever, and thats why sometimes the service takes more time than you would like it was a meal to you to forget, but with my sincere appologies, i would like you to try again soon and visit us. we started this in the meddle of february and then we had the covid, it is not easy, but we will get there and we will need your help with your comments so we can go in the right way once again i am sorry and hope to see you again with best regards Henrique ferreira de lima rampa

Extremely slow service. Food is not served at the same time for everyone at the same table (leaving some already finished their entire meal before others even get their food. From ordering to getting the main course it took about 75 minutes. Food was mediocre at best. Staff did not even apologize for the terribly slow service. Avoid this place.

My brother who is a Rampa regular persuaded me to take the scooters from Portimao up to the top of Monchique, the views were stunning from the top and on the way back down we stopped off at this great little restaurant. We were greeted by a delightful young lady who showed us to a table, the restaurant veranda was busy with around 12 other diners and it just felt good. Our drinks and menus arrived and I chose the peri peri chicken, and brother Mark chose the pork and apple. All freshly prepared we had a little wait, but no issue as waitress was great and attentive to keep our drinks topped up. Food arrived and it was amazing, chicken as good as my favourite in Silves, and fries were great, Mark’s food was beautifully cooked and tasted amazing. Peri Peri homemade sauce as hot as anything I’ve eaten, but loved my first visit and can’t wait to come back soon. Thank you for making an already great day, into a fantastic day.

This used to be brilliant with fresh home grown tomatoes and potatoes (made into homemade chips) special peri peri sauce with the chicken marinated in the sauce. Unfortunately this is no longer the case. The chips are frozen and everything else is shop bought. The chicken was ok and barbecued but the sauce was at the side. The pasta was very poor and cold. The prices are twice as much as what were a few years ago. Overall sadly disappointing.

Dear Madam, in the name of Rampa Monchique, i am very desapointed with your comments, as it follows: the fresh hoime tomatoes are still the same, and never from us, but from Mr Victor that has a small and under the restaurant an dhe sells for us for a lot of years the tomatoes, tomate rosa as called, is starting now, due to the high temperatures, so from now we might have them as for the potatoes, i am shocked with you as NEVER THIS RESTAURANT SERVED frozen POTATOES, and i can tell you, for years the potatoes come from MR Alcanjo that sells them for years and aso sels them im Mercado de PortimĂŁo the potatoes are pieled every morning and than we cut them, wash them and fry them at the moment NO FRO0ZEN POTATOES IN RAMPA MONCHIQUE Pease lady go shopping ant do tell me if the prices did not go UP as never before do you want me to keep the prices from 4 years ago??? please be welcome again with us and than we will discuss these matters again as for the pasta being cold, i am sorry but it it was my fault, and i am sorry for that with kind regards h f lima a rampa monchique

We came across this small restaurant with the most stunning views and thought we would stop and have some lunch . We ended up leaving as they clearly didn’t want to serve us or accept our dog . Would be very careful about going to this small restaurant who clearly don’t need any more money for their business as they were not busy ?

We went to A Rampa early yesterday evening. We were greeted by a very rude and abrupt waiter, who made a big show of seeing whether he could fit us in even though there were only 4 other people in the restaurant. We ordered chicken piri piri which has always been excellent there. The chicken was very poor quality, just scraps and very dry. There was hardly any piri piri flavouring. The salad was a few limp lettuce leaves and a bit of tomato. We have been visiting A Rampa for over 12 years and have recommended it to several people, but no more. This sadly will be our last visit.

Dear Sir/Madam i am also desapointed with your comment, as it is not normal in rampa monchique. the day you came here for diner was an unfortunate day for me. my grill man had a back problem and he´s still not working and making physio, and my girl from the restaurant Amitha could not make diners that day, so i had to make the diners with me in the grill and my brother in the tables. i was not very good in grill (but now i already am) and my brother was initiating in the tables. now i can promise you that we have improved so, please do try us again, and if so, please do talk to me my regrets and we all want to see you again in rampa monchique best regards h f lima

I'm really happy of our experience at Rampa restaurant. We were in holidays with few friends and didn't know where to go for lunch in Monchique. Such a good surprise!! Typical portuguĂŞs food but very tasty, we took each 4 of us a different dish and all of them were perfect. The view is amazing, facing the south cost and the service impeccable.

A Rampa was well known, friends from Lisbon would go there. Worth the Journey as they say in the guides. We had not been for a long seven years. There has been a change of ownership and it shows. There is no name change and no attempt to offer anything different, no change of style. The standard meal was a ham first course, used to be carved from local ham, now the appearances of pre-packed. The star was the chicken, was charcoaled, now seems to be a gas grill. Their own peri-peri, not now. The chips were skinny little things. Word seems to have got around, possibly no Portuguese customers, three tables with English ones - all of a vintage to have known former glories. On a plus side there has been no redecoration. at least it looks the same. The staff were welcoming and helpful with the young children. A pity about the food. Used to be worth the journey, now not worth popping up from the coast.

I visited here many times as a child 25 years ago, we specifically came up to Monchique today from where we are staying in Amancil 30-40 miles away, to search for this restaurant and see if it was as good as my memory. It did not disappoint, friendly waiting & kitchen staff, wonderful views and the chicken piri piri of dreams. We took 2 hours over lunch because we were having such a great time. It felt very relaxed and very friendly. The views from the terrace are superb, the food came quickly, the drinks were cold and we could not have asked for more. Portuguese perfection. Greatly recommended.
