Thoroughky enjoyed my reunion with Tapis Malbec

Once you understand that eating in Belgium is not cheap, you must then relax and hope to get some value out of your expenditure. This we did when we booked this restaurant and were not disappointed in either respect (price and quality) - two courses and a bottle of wine for over £100 but what wine (although a really hefty mark up). Great atmosphere in a building first used in the 15th Century. Very large, grand area beautifully area divided into different levels and sized tables. Warm welcome and great service all night. Really good and tasty escargot for me and excellent beef carpaccio for herself followed by kangaroo steak for me and vegetable risotto for herself - both were very enjoyable (if the sauce on the steak as a little heavy)! Tapis Malbec is one of my favourites and this did not disappoint.

Fantastic evening

Our dinner at this great and atmospheric restaurant in Bruges set our long weekend trip off on the best of footings. Firstly, my decision to book well in advance was certainly the right one - on the (Friday) evening we turned up, there was already a queue of people trying their luck for a free table and the place only really quietened down towards the end of the evening. Service was immediate and friendly from the off, despite the restaurant being incredibly busy, and continued in that vein throughout the evening. Our waiter took time to explain the menu and recommend wine choices (and not from the expensive end of the list). Our group of six chose a variety of meat, fish and vegetarian (me) items from the menu, all of which were excellent and very well-received. While the vegetarian options were fairly limited, my red Thai vegetable curry was spicy and very tasty, With plenty of food and very good wine, a bill for six came to just over €400, which was to be honest great value.

Great, late night dinner spot.

We arrived pretty late to Burges on a Saturday night and managed to book a table for 9pm here. Couldn't believe how busy it still was, and with people even arriving after us! The staff were friendly, and spoke English. Due to the lateness we though "just order the mixed fried tapas and chicken Caesar salad." Well both were such decent portions we could not finish it all. Took a little while at the end to get the bill, but otherwise a perfect visit. Oh and the live jazz apparently is every other Sunday so if you are going for that be sure to find out the schedule so you are not disappointed.

Terrible, aggressive service - avoid!

Everyone makes mistakes but you can judge a place by how they deal with it and this place was awful. We waited over 1 hour 30 minutes for our mains, all but one were rare steaks. We ordered drinks that never arrived and there we no apologies whatsoever. When we asked for a discount on the bill or some drinks to make up for it the manager was rude, aggressive, and couldn't care less. The dishes are expensive - the 16 euro prawn starter was 4 small prawns in a skillet - and so the service should be exceptional. All in all, wouldn't recommend at all and they left a horrible taint on our otherwise very pleasant visit to Bruges.

Disappointing

There were 12 of us eating. 9 of the meals were very good, however 3 meals (all the same - Striploin steak) were all of very poor quality. This wasflagged to the manager who offered another type of steak, but this was not desirable. Instead, it was proposed that we discount the three poor meals by 30%. The waiter (possibly the manager) refused to do this and instead offered 3 free drinks. We needed to leave so the drinks wasn’t a vIable solution. I think the biggest concern with this situation was the complete lack of flexibility and the waiter (or manager) even accused me of threatening him when I said I would pay the bill, but would do so under protest and would likely leave a poor review on this platform. Disgraceful. Spoiled what was otherwise a good meal with his attitude towards the fact they have purchased poor quality meat and refused to address this in an appropriate and acceptable way.

Awful do not go.

Sat down and forgotten about. It took at least 15 mins for our order to be taken. He then delivers our drinks to the table next to us then decided to blame us for the mix up saying “you must have moved”. This was just the first sign of things to come. Our starters arrived and they were bland. We Waited again a while for our main course “pasta with salmon” which was also bland and I left some of mine. We asked the server for the bill to which he replied “you finish your main before I give you the bill” why does he think he has the right to speak to customers like that? Finally he arrives with the bill (after insistence) and then proceeds to tell my husband “show me, show me, show me” as he is putting his card into the machine. We can only assume he wanted to make sure he got a tip. We can cope with paying for average food but to be disrespected.

Not quite as expected

It was not quite as expected. Judging by all the good reviews here, I had high expectations of the place. I was looking forward to a lively eatery with music and bustling life. Instead, we came to an almost empty place with a staff I did not perceive as particularly service-minded. We were a large group and it had been a long day. So maybe not an ideal situation where we came in hungry around 20:30. It still does not change the situation considering that the place was almost empty on a Thursday night. Then I had also thought that the service would be better. The food was also nothing to brag about. The creme brulee tasted almost nothing and several of the guests wanted to send food back to the kitchen. I was simply left with the impression that this was an overpriced tourist trap. Not to recommend even though they have garnered a lot of praise from others. Maybe they have not endured the pandemic.

Rude rip off

After being greeted by the manager and assured he would look after us he then proceeded to upsell starters we didn’t want( asked for cheese/olives- got fried checked / croquettes), then serve everyone around us their food . After two hours we were told we were disrespecting the kitchen when we said we wanted to leave - the food miraculously then arrived. They tried to over charge us and then insisted the whole 600euro bill went on one card. Building beautiful and Belgium stew was very good but the owner ruins the place with his attitude and obvious desire to rip people off.

I wouldn't even want to write a reply to you, but since there are untrue slanders, we will use our right to respond to what you wrote! First of all, our group customers like you always make a choice from the menu on our website 3 days in advance and send us their choices by e-mail, you said you did not want to do it, so we approved it once! Secondly, after we came to you, we gave you all the information and explained that we would first order your drinks, then your starter and then your main course, and you approved it! While making your reservation, you saw and confirmed on our website that there will be live music on 03.11.2023 and that an extra fee of 7.50 euros per person will be paid. Even if you missed it, you can easily see this information on our menu outside, on the menu cards at the door entrances, so there is no need to say such unreal things, the honest one always wins! Finally, you used unrealistic words about our business manager, but our manager took very good care of you and I heard with my own ears that if you let me know when you want the main dishes, he will have them prepared in the kitchen, but you did not say anything! To this day, we have not included even an extra water in anyone's bill, people pay for what they drink or eat, you cannot compare us with others, you cannot question us, and especially you cannot slander us with such cheap slanderous articles! Would you ask your last 2 female friends who went out? Our manager is so gentlemanly and professional that he even ordered 2 free limoncello for your last friends who went out :)

This restaurant could have been lovely as the food was OK but was spoilt by the attitude of the manager. Our mains arrived 2 hours after we arrived, the waiter oversold us starters, we were overcharged with no apology, also charged €7.50 each as there was a band playing. The manager was exceptionally rude and intimidating. Don’t go here there are many far nicer restaurants in Bruges with welcoming and friendly staff.

Great place - a good time had by all!

I don’t normally write reviews but having read the reviews since Oct 2023 (writing Dec 2023) I feel they were really unfair and feel obliged to write my own. Don’t let previous reviews put you off going, we nearly cancelled because of them, but went and had a great time. We went as a family - 8 people, various ages including 2 teenagers. The food was good - all of our party agreed. I should say, my partner is a chef and we have run restaurants ourselves and I frequently have to suffer his moaning about the food but he was happy enough here. We can only vouch for the rabbit, Thai curry, and stew. Regarding the service. Imagine a place packed with people and staff running around doing their very best. So ok, you might have to wait a little while but while you are waiting the excellent band is playing (not sure if this happens every night) so you have something to keep you happy while you wait. It’s not McDonalds so you have to expect to wait a bit if you want food that isn’t microwaved or deep fried from the freezer!! All good things come to those who wait. The things we really appreciated 1) the band was great 2) we had two teenagers and where we live in Scotland they would not be allowed in a bar in the evening so our two got to experience live music. 3). The atmosphere is great.

Nice setting, shame about the delay.

Over the years we have visited this restaurant many times, every experience a delight. The setting, decor, style all unique. Under a previous owner/manger attention to customers needs was great. Ownership changed a couple of years ago, I understand. Three of us went last night anticipating the same. We arrived at 8pm. Drinks and nibbles arrived relatively quickly, but the mains took over an hour and a half to arrive. We asked the waiter two or three times if we’d been forgotten. Finally, the food arrived around 9.35, an incorrect dish initially been offered. At this point the restaurant was 85% empty, the ambiance somewhat gone. The quality of the food was good when it came (the rabbit portion large, but a bit over cooked) and both waiters were apologetic for the delay and offered us free coffee (we declined). However having to wait so long suggests we were forgotten (an adjacent table of three waited a similar time) of that the kitchen is understaffed. So, if you book give yourself plenty of time, just in case.

Awfully rude manager

Pre-booked this place before our trip based on its favourable reviews. Our family group of seven were well received and the service, food and ambiance were were all pretty good. However, our elderly father, who has Alzheimer’s was struggling a little with his child-size portion of food in a quiet respectful manner but had resulted in him sat with his head in his hands. This prompted the manager to assume he was drunk when he clearly was not, and told my sister that he was to have no more alcohol. She calmly tried to explain the situation and that it is not alcohol related but he didn’t care and told to take it outside. My father went outside to get some air with two of our group and the manager followed him out and stood staring at him in a very aggressive manner while constantly on the phone (although he wasn’t talking). There was no effort made to understand what was actually going on. One of our group paid and we left immediately. I’ve seen other reviews mention his aggressive behaviour and they are not wrong. This not a piggy-back review. Spend your money elsewhere and steer well clear

We really can't understand that you made such a comment that you would like to thank us!!! We were very worried about the person because he wasn't feeling well at the table, so we asked if you needed an ambulance or if you needed anything we could do, and the answer was no, everything was fine. Later, when we saw that he was bad, we asked him again, we give him some water and you said he will be fine. Now we're shocked seeing all the ridiculous lies and weird nonsense here because the person giving this feedback was totally drunk and talking to us out of respect and not understanding someone who is sick??? You should really be ashamed of yourself because you try to justify yourself by slandering us but we just wanted to help but we see that sometimes this can be misunderstood!!! For us, all our customers are the same, if they feel bad, we will take care of them and we will continue to care, despite your unnecessary nonsense words... We did everything professionally and we will do it forever without your nonsense words...

Ecstasy.

The flickering candle lite dinner and stain glass windows emphasize the dark wooden interior. The atmosphere allows for the guests to truly enjoy the rich, melting beef stew. If you have ever had beef stew, think otherwise. Bistro Zwart Huis has the BEST stew i have ever had in my life. The amazing welcoming staff and inviting atmosphere is a key place to visit in Brugge. 15/10 would go again.

Blues Band Heaven

Friends wedding anniversary We arrived early offered a choice of tables and because the blues music was the attraction chose a table near the front. There were no other customers at the time and so service was attentive. The venue and staging were great. The band highly professional and good! Well worth the 10 Euro per head add on to the bill. The wine pricey but good ( city centre) No non alcoholic beer in stock disappointing - a soft drink was offered as an alternative. Food was ok - A great atmosphere and a great night with the blues band.

Ten ladies must have appeared as a cash cow. We booked well ahead and were asked to pre-order as we are a large party. Couldn't access online pre-order so popped in earlier, and we were asked to limit our table order to a choice of five dishes. No problem. On arrival we made food and drink orders. The band started. All looked great. An hour later we had eaten starters and tried to order more wine. Half an hour later we asked about a missing bottle of wine. On it's way. Another fifteen minutes later we asked again. It came. Two hours after we arrived we got up to leave, fed up of waiting for mains, to be told that we were not respecting their kitchen. (Other groups had arrived, ordered, eaten and left) Our food arrived quickly at that point and was good. We asked for the bill. They charged us for more wine than ordered. Also charged us for music, which was well worth it, but we hadn't been told that it was an extra cost. This restaurant is victim of its management. If you use it, check the bill carefully.
