An experience you have to face yourself. Sitting between boxes filled with old newspapers on a filthy or wooden table and old bicycles on the sealing. The beer was way to expensive, 14 euro for two beer, and the brand we wanted was not available.
But as a place, you have to visit it.

... if you are happy to pay 6 Euros for an unknown beer (in the sense that there is no beer list and the owner (?) simply offered us a strong beer or not. We went for a "not" and were offered a blonde (which was at best good).
Inside, it is to be honest dirty. Fascinating as the bicycle paraphernalia, ironwork of all sorts, odd statuettes and bric a brac is, it does have to vie with e.g. a stove whose dust has spilled over the floor, myriad spider webs, a jar of dried pasta in the window, cat food on the floor as you enter, dirty cloths strewed around.
We dared not go anywhere near to the toilet.
Would I go again. No.

THIS IS NOT A RESTRAUNT A friend recommended this place and it was a real eye opener, the place is full of old bikes, hanging from the ceiling, fixed to the walls and free standing. Not much in the way of seating as lots covered in junk. The bottled beer that we drank served by the the eccentric owner in a Christmas jumper was superb. Worth going to see the interior, not a place to stay for more than a couple of drinks.

It looks like we were the latest in a long line of tourists to fall prey to being ripped off here!
Yes it is quirky, but I was charged 6 euros for a beer that I had paid 4 - 4.5 elsewhere. Fine if it was upmarket, but it was really shabby & worse that most people's garden sheds.
Quirky is ok, if there is a price list, but you don't expect to get ripped off to that extent. It was obvious when I asked to pay, that he come up with the price off the top of his head.
He must have done ok that day, as I got off lightly compared to others.....judging by some of the reviews.
Luckily my partner did not have a drink, so only got ripped off once. We only popped in for a quick drink while we were waiting for a restaurant in Oudburg to open. We had spotted this place down a side street when we walked through Oudburg & it looked interesting.
When we mentioned this bar to the waiter in the restaurant, he was very disappointed. He said that this person had a different price for tourists & reflects badly on the way tourists are treated in the city.
Avoid unless you don't mind paying over the odds for drinks!!

Quirky - yes.
It was only when he charged us 18 euros for 1 tall beer that we realised we had fallen into the basic tourist trap of not checking prices before ordering. Avoid the cobwebs and keep going to a bar by the canal.

Charging tourists double prices... 7 euro for a chimay beer that will cost you on the most expensive terrace about 4 euro no explanation at all!

This place is most certainly like marmite; you’re either going to love it or hate it, but we loved it. The owner is super quirky and friendly, his cat, Telouse, just pops up out of the random rubble of things that fill this bar to the brim. We had Jesus on one side and Buddha on the other; both wearing wigs. There is also the log burner, which was well stoked and very welcome on a cold evening.
The beer is expensive, and yes is probably is a little unhygienic. You’re also not given a menu / price list when you walk in; but it’s the not that kind of place. A large bottle of beer, which is about two pints cost 16 euros, which isn’t too bad!
We loved it and would certainly recommend it for a totally different and unique experience ☺️

Everything people say about this place is true. Yes the beer is overpriced and the place is filthy and unhygienic......it is also enormous fun and you are likely to meet other people there who are also looking for somewhere different. I don’t think I would want to stay there all night but the large bottle of beer we shared was worth every cent. I have been in hundreds of bars and pubs in my life. This makes it into the top 5 memorable places. Just go there and see for yourself. If you don’t like it there are plenty of more ‘normal’ places nearby...

'One of a kind' is a phrase that is overused but once you've been here, you definitely won't forget it in a hurry. You'll either love it or hate it but you will certainly talk about it to others. There's all kinds of random stuff lying around - 20/30 old bikes hanging from the ceiling, tables full of all sorts of rubbish. I wasn't sure whether the old beer glasses were either part of the furniture or just hadn't been cleared away. The paint scraper was also just what I needed whilst having a beer!!! Ask how much your drink will cost when you order as you may get offended when you get landed with a check for 18 euros a bottle at the end! I won't go again but I'm glad I've been the once - just take it with a pinch of salt.

We ended up here while we were looking for a nice place to have a beer. From the outside this place doesn't look like much and this is actually confirmed on the inside. The place was cold and full of rubbish, clothes and bikes. The owner didnt offer a pricelist but opened two (good tasting) beer bottles and some glasses. To be honest, despite all of this we had a good time here. The bill at the end shocked us a little and gave a bad aftertaste.
I wouldnt recommend this place.

This place ruined our fine evening. It has peculiar decorations and the owner is rather eccentric - we thought it’s interesting and he first came across as a sympathetic guy: watch out it’s a scam. He over charged us with more than double of the normal going rates. The place is filthy, unhygienic. He washes the already dirty glasses in water that is even dirtier. It’s time this place gets an inspection for health and safety - not to mention the tax authorities. Only cash no receipts.

Me and my wife visited here after reading about it in an article. It did not disappoint.
The inside is full of bicycles 🚲 hanging from the ceiling. The gentleman who runs the place was so friendly.
It's in a great location in patershol and it is near everything. We didn't need to go far to find it.
It is so quirky and different that it's a must to come here.
If the weather is nice expect to sit outside and make some friends.

At first, we found the place nice, peculiar but/and so nice.
We wanted to get a beer, and the owner offered 2 big bottles without bringing the drinks menu. We were confident. Apparently two much.
Beers were good ones but without anything special. Except may be the price: 16€/bottle.
We are quite sure the price was not the good one, just a price given to tourists who do not ask for the menu before ordering...
Not a place with and for honnest people.

I can imagine a lot of people walking past or walking out of 't Velootje. It's packed full of old stuff which looks like a mish mash of old junk collected by a hoarder, and it is! But that "junk" is probably the most interesting collection you will ever see. The bicycles - just the bicycles - are worth going in for. Have a good look at them, the history is phenomenal. From wooden penny farthings, old TdF bikes, frames, Napoleon's bike! Yes, it's in here. There are candlesticks galore, candelabra, chandeliers, you just can't stop looking.
If you want a sterile place and atmosphere, then you won't find it in here.
The owner (hi Lieven) is knowledgeable and happy to tell you what's in there.
We went in with a friend from Ghent who loves this place, and his enthusiasm was infectious. I'd like to have stayed longer but we were on a "pub crawl" as our friend wanted to show us Ghent (well, the bars of Ghent at least) and this was one of our stop offs.
The beer was good (6 of us shared the larger bottles), there's a little outside terrace to the front, and an array of eccentric and lovely customers.
If you're a clean freak, then I'd suggest staying away as the dust is insurmountable because of the number of props, but if you're not, look past all this and look at the treasures Lieven has in there.
Just go - you'll love it or hate it, but either way it will definitely leave an everlasting impression.

From April the 11'th to the 28 th of april 2017 the Taverne 't Velootje has been closed, during the spring clean up.
Big news is that after the clean up, who was necessary, the autority's visited the place and found it al right, to re-open, from noon on the 28 th of april this year. The first to visit the place and to give à positive advice where the Fire Brigade, an the Police of the city of Ghent. The last visit was by the agents of the Belgian national Agency for food security. This free house offers you à rich pallet of Belgian Beers in small bottles, but also in 75 cl bottles, you can drink with two.
As the Belgian Beer pallet is growing, the choice is changing, and some new beers are certainly worth tho visit the place. Remember it is difficult to stand on one leg!
As 't Velootje is still à beverage house, no meals are served, but you will certainly find some good belgian beer to taste, and enjoy.
Now that du to the general clean-up there is more place on the tables, and more place to sit, à positive advise was received to ask for à outside terras, at the local administration.
Come allong you will love it!
