Went on the recommendation of a friend who lives in Amsterdam and am pleased we did. It didn't rate that highly on trip advisor and we only had 3 dinner's in Amsterdam (and of course you dont want to waste one!). Really glad we came here. The food was really nice and seasonal. Service was lovely, loved the room and... More

SInce 1994 Balthasar's Keuken has served delicious food for a very decent price. Yesterday I ate a good deer steak with a date risotto. The starters, a plate full of small mezze had mussels with truffeloil which was truly divine, and an assortment of other tasty bites, like squid and a miniature quiche. The desert is hard to describe, but... More

not value for money . Poor and slow service. Sorry to say that the the very friendly staff was too busy to take proper care of the guest . The food was too rustique for our taste. Big lumps of fish and Meat, with very little or no vegetables. The concept with a fixed menu should leave options for more... More

We found this eatery by word of mouth - the tattooed guy in the denim store a few blocks down was adamant that we try to get a table at Blthazar's. The menu is created each night with limited options - but that should not deter you at all. The starter came with five little plates and fresh cuts of... More

Service seemed a bit disorganised initially but ordered a pre-dinner drink and given olives so happy to wait a wee while. The 2 shift system mean that a lot of people are arriving close together. Waitress explained food in excellent English. Tapas style starters to share, choice of meat or fish main dish, and chocolate mousse dessert. All very delicious,... More

A wonderful reception and fantastic food. A must if you're in Amsterdam and love food! The starter was a lovely palette of small tapas, followed by an amazing duck dish and a lovely dessert! All accompanied by wonderful wine of the week. I am definitely going again!

Amazing food and great service all at unbelievable good value. We had a lovely evening in this small and very busy gem. No wonder it is recommended by so many. Consider yourself very fortunate if you get a table and then sit back and enjoy great food.

Restaurant is intimate with a distressed vintage charm with a modern twist. The set starters were generally good with one or two out of five missing the mark. Mains of Veal Rib Chop (fabulous) and Tuna steak (good) with excellent house red wine. Great staff, very good food with a cool uptown clientele made for a great evening

the place is amazing. Dutch quality food, wines and beers of excellent standard. We were greeted nicely by the home team, always attentive from start to finish. Menu entry with 5 different types served together, main course with two options and dessert. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

This is a really quaint little restaurant. It was very busy, but we had booked ahead and only had to wait a couple of minutes. There were five really unique starters with a great variety of tastes. The main courses were either meat or fish (we had both) and all flavours were superbly balanced. I would happily eat here again... More

Balthazars Keuken restaurant in the heart of the Jordaan district is one of Amsterdam's most special restaurants. It is a long, narrow space set in a former smithy, with scrubbed wooden floors, an open kitchen with pans and utensils hanging in plain view. The moss-coloured banquettes, unadorned wooden seating, and plain white table linens add to the ambience of simplicity and relaxation. And it's tiny, seating just about 30 inside and a few more on the bijou terrace in fine weather. 'Romantic' must be Balthazar's middle name, in spite of the plain surroundings. Owners Karen Gaasterland and Alain Parry create internationally-inflected three-course fixed-price dinners, with a menu that changes every week. They create. You enjoy. No choice about the dishes, though. The starters are tidbits meant to appeal to all. The mains are perfectly-sourced fish or meat with sides. House wine is from the Languedoc, chosen to complement the Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. Dinner and lunch from Wednesday through Saturday. Groups up to ten can dine in the restaurant then, or hire the entire venue for private events during the rest of the week. Very popular, very packed.

Staying in Jordaan

Neighborhood Profile
One of Amsterdam’s most preferred outdoor markets and some of the city’s favorite watering holes are but two of the many reasons to save ample time for a stroll through this especially convivial warren of narrow streets with its unfair share of quirky shops and quality galleries. Historically a haven for the working class and emigrants, these days the Jordaan is better known as an enclave for artists and designers. As popular as the Jordaan is as a destination for locals and out-of-towners alike, the area never feels particularly touristy or overrun with outsiders. A highlight even for long-time Jordaan residents, be sure to accept any invitation to step within one of the area’s beloved courtyards or to have a sneak peek inside one of its many working studios.
