Little cute place somewhere on a side street of Damplatz. They have tiny tiny kitchen, so you may wait quite a long time for your food, but it's worth it! When your turn is up, you'll talk to really nice waitress that will take your order, they don't have menus! The staff will explain what they have and what they... More

No menu, no problem. It will be a mixture of locals and tourists. Highly recommended - Friendly service, great beer, amazing food.

It's actually just off Dam Square but we went arseways to find it! Friendly girls working there. I don't recommend the steak with fruity sauce (check out Restaurant Red for steak!) but the fish and curries have been great every time I've gone (3-4 times). Nice quite street and if the sun is out it's a lovely place to sit.

The title sums it up. Van Kerkwijk is a Amsterdam gem. The lack of menu made me apprehensive but the staff are knowledgable, friendly, and run you through it all. I had the pate starter which was simple but tasty. And the coconut curry slow-cooked chicken for my main. It was superb! Tender meat falling off the bone, delicate by... More

I loved this restaurant. For not having a menu, the options were fairly extensive and varied. I had a delicious steak that didn't break the bank. I would visit again in a heartbeat.

I've been to Van Kerkwijk three times and like it more each time I go. Instead of a menu, a server recites the day's specials - typically one chicken, a couple of fish, and one or two meat dishes. Food, wine and desserts are all excellent, and the service is very good. I can't wait to go again!

Our 4th visit so far this year. Every visit has been warm, friendly and delicious. Just tried the meatloaf special and it was fantastic. Although near the swarms of tourists, this place still attracts many locals and regulars for good reason.

We came here after reading the great reviews on trip advisor. I'm so glad we did. What a treat! You are told what the menu is verbally. We were concerned about doing this as there was no mention of price. I ordered the tomato soup to start and the steak with sun dried tomato butter as a main. My girlfriend... More

2 sisters run this restaurant , no menu, the sisters will tell you what the specials of the day are. The choice is quite extensive and the meals delicious . Busy at night, take your place at the bar and wait - it's worth it.

Description
Van Kerkwijk, situated at the Nes 41 just behind Dam square, is a classic Amsterdam cafe and restaurant where you can eat and drink from early in the morning till late in the evening. Van Kerkwijk sisters have chosen a personal approach. That's why a menu doesn't exist and your options are presented at the table by your waiter.

Van Kerkwijk stands for quality food and drinks in an urban atmosphere. Characteristic, easy going, value for money. You feel at home between the regular customers who keep returning for the varied menu and the relax atmosphere.

Van Kerkwijk doesn't take reservations, walk in for a table or wait at the bar with a good beer or wine.

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighborhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
