We had to wait around 10min before being fitted at a table but that was a pleasure to wait at the bar of the restaurant with a local beer. The menu is not written and a waiter will introduce you the different plates available in a perfect english. Food is served quickly and it is very tasty. You should try... More

As all the others reviews suggest - this place is really really amazing - and totally changed our dining experience in Amsterdam. The night before, we got stung by a restaurant just around the corner from this, which ended up costing more and was ridiculously disappointing. This place is awesome! As discussed in other posts, there is no written menu.... More

Van Kerkwijk is without any doubt the best restaurant in Amsterdam. The menu includes some flavors of the history of the Netherlands: dishes from former Dutch colonies and influences and fusions of several different gastronomies (showing a bit of the city of tolerance and freedom). The staff is very friendly and will make you feel like at home. Will repeat... More

I walked in alone at around 17:30 on a Sunday and the place was packed. The wonderful waitress found me a little table and proceeded to explain the day's menu. I asked her to surprise me and I was not disappointed in the least. The atmosphere in the restaurant is, by itself, inviting: cosy and warm. The food was out... More

The service and the food is always good here in this small restaurant. You can tell by it is a popular place as it is always packed. Beware you cannot make a reservation at Van Kerkwijk, so you just show up and if it is full the place you at the bar where you can have a drink till your... More

The atmosphere is very quaint, you feell right at home. We had lunch there and the sandwich was one of the finest I have had. The staff is incredibly friendly, down to earth, they make you feel appreciated. We have noted this place in our phones and will be sure to stop there everytime we get to Amsterdam. We HIGHLY... Great food well worth the wait, the duck and steak was wonderful. The menu is spoken verbally and was a reasonable price for the quality of food. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming.

This restaurant reminded us of one of our favorite places back in the US -- its small, a bit loud, no reservations, food selections that change daily, and a twist -- no printed menu, but a great bartender, fabulous food, and overall just a fun atmosphere. You don't mind waiting; have a drink at the bar and enjoy the scene... More

Went based on TripAdvisor reviews and it did not disappoint. The waitress tells you all the starters and main options which come with a side of fries and salad. I had pate followed by duck and both were delicious and perfectly cooked. My friend started with smocked haddock followed by salmon and she thoroughly enjoyed them. I would definitely recommend... Excellent. It has all been said in previous reviews, but go if you can. Yes, you may have to wait but it is worthwhile. Went earlier this week. Informal and unpresumptuous. Busy but personal - a unique achievement. Excellent food and convivial atmosphere. What more could you want?

Thank John C

Van Kerkwijk, situated at the Nes 41 just behind Dam square, is a classic Amsterdam cafe and restaurant where you can eat and drink from early in the morning till late in the evening. Van Kerkwijk sisters have chosen a personal approach. That's why a menu doesn't exist and your options are presented at the table by your waiter.

Van Kerkwijk stands for quality food and drinks in an urban atmosphere. Characteristic, easy going, value for money. You feel at home between the regular customers who keep returning for the varied menu and the relax atmosphere.

Van Kerkwijk doesn't take reservations, walk in for a table or wait at the bar with a good beer or wine.

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighborhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
