5 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

Went here based on TA reviews and definitely was not disappointed. The menu is variable day by day (apparently) so they come and tell you what's on the menu in person which was certainly different but also very charming. There were 4 of us in our party and they happened to have a 4-top table ready when we walked in,... More

This is one of my favourite restaurants that I've visited in the past year. The food was an amazing fusion of Dutch and Indonesian flavours. We had heard tales of how good the Pâté was, so we asked for some as a side dish and it didn't disappoint. I would recommend a visit for this alone. Our main courses where... More

In the very centre of Amsterdam this tiny restaurant is a wonderful surprise. No bookings: you have to wait a bit enjoying beer or wine; no written menu: someone comes to your table to explain every dish you can have. Good food ( muscles, steak and dutch apple pie), excellent service, every member of the staff is open to a... More

If you get the chance to experience this wonderful little out of the way restaurant it is a must do, quite simply the best meal I had the entire trip. Plus the apetizer was fantastic

A friend of my daughter, who is a flight attendant, arrived in Amsterdam the same morning as my husband and I and wanted to meet for dinner. Seattle/Amsterdam is her regular route, so she is familiar with good value dining spots. She suggested Van Kerkwijk as it was central to both our hotels....ours near Leidseplein and hers across the harbor... More

Place was packed when we got there but we found a spot in the bar while we waited for our table. The place is very lively. Great atmosphere. The waitor sits at your table and explains the daily menu from memory and takes your order without taking notes. Food is absolutely delicious. Uncomplicated and well prepared. I loved every bite... The food here is great and you can tell it's super fresh. The waiters are really lovely, although as it's quite popular they are quite busy. I really like how it is not on a main street so doesn't seem so hectic, the only criticism would be that the vibe is lacking a bit, maybe a bit of music and... More

Your met at front door and seated by one of the ladies that either own or manage the restaurant. No written menu but she sits with your group and describes the options. Appetizers come out and the main course. Excellent taste and quality. Located off busy Dam Square area but it's quiet down a pedestrian alley. Highly recommend.

Description
Van Kerkwijk, situated at the Nes 41 just behind Dam square, is a classic Amsterdam cafe and restaurant where you can eat and drink from early in the morning till late in the evening. Van Kerkwijk sisters have chosen a personal approach. That's why a menu doesn't exist and your options are presented at the table by your waiter.

Van Kerkwijk stands for quality food and drinks in an urban atmosphere. Characteristic, easy going, value for money. You feel at home between the regular customers who keep returning for the varied menu and the relax atmosphere.

Van Kerkwijk doesn't take reservations, walk in for a table or wait at the bar with a good beer or wine.

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighborhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
