The wait was really long but they were very friendly and there were only two waitresses in the whole place and they had so much charisma, the food was fantastic I would definitely recommend this place to eat!

Everything we tried was amazing. Duck with figs, chicken with curry, mussels in garlic oil. Loved it! The waitresses are super friendly!

We'd read the excellent reviews and totally agree. It was a long wait but the food was beautifully presented and the dishes all delicious. The service was really fast and efficient but what helped was to read the menu on the wall before you enter so that you're ready to order on arrival if you're hungry. (There's no menu inside... We just popped in for a quick 'something' at 3:30pm and were both delighted with the bell pepper soup on offer. There was more but we opted for the soup. Delicious and filling, great service, nice place. Do yourself a favour and check it out.

Food was that good. And great atmosphere. Best restaurant I've been to my short time here. Friendly staff. Get there early.

We stopped here for lunch after a recommendation, even though the street was under repair or construction at the time. The extensive and inviting menu was told to us by the waitress, we had no menus. And as our recommendation suggested, our simple amazing meal was presented with out any fan fare and enjoyed with relish. I would not hesitate... More

The restaurant is very small but the servers were knowledgeable and friendly. We arrived during prime time on a Saturday and waited at the bar for an hour which was not unexpected. Make sure to order a starter or you will starve waiting for your main course. However both dinners were divine. We shared duck with a fig sauce and... More

We went because it was good rated an trip advisor. On arrival we were told 45min waiting time was due. We exited but after a quick strolled we endured the wait at the bar with some pints of beer. The food was amazing and the waiters explained everything to the tiniest detail. the only negative point could be the rapidity... More

We really loved the atmosphere here. We had a great date night here in Amsterdam. We did not have a reservation but didn't have to wait too long to get a great table. Our server gave us the night's menu verbally. We enjoyed all the flavors and the ambiance though my steak was tough but the rest of the food... More

We visited this fabulous little place on a Thursday evening and it was packed. We had to wait a while for a table but amused ourselves with wine and people watching. The restaurant seemed busy with locals and tourists alike. The food was wonderful - we had the beef with goats cheese and strawberry sauce, served with delicious chips and... More

Van Kerkwijk, situated at the Nes 41 just behind Dam square, is a classic Amsterdam cafe and restaurant where you can eat and drink from early in the morning till late in the evening. Van Kerkwijk sisters have chosen a personal approach. That's why a menu doesn't exist and your options are presented at the table by your waiter.

Van Kerkwijk stands for quality food and drinks in an urban atmosphere. Characteristic, easy going, value for money. You feel at home between the regular customers who keep returning for the varied menu and the relax atmosphere.

Van Kerkwijk doesn't take reservations, walk in for a table or wait at the bar with a good beer or wine.

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighborhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
