Our first choice for a late dinner was closed, so, after walking so far, husband and I de iced to duck into friendly looking Cafe Thijssen. I think we were the only non-locals. The full menu wasn't available but we followed the waitresses suggestions for snacks and shared the 24 piece plate of fired butterballs, chicken nuggets, cheese sticks, and... More

Nice café and all, but the smells of the old beer is kind of overpowering. Fine for a dunken friday or saturday night, other time you 'll find yourself in a very smelly café, not exactly enjoyable ...

Dear Tristan, Thank you for your review. I see you paid us a visit in January. It might be a possibility that it was one of the first days of the month. That would explain. You see, we have the most renowned New Year's drink in the whole of Amsterdam. over 4000 beers are poured in just 6 hours. People... More

We looked for a place to eat lunch and went into Cafe Thijssen. Got a great and very tasty meal (onion soup) and some very good local beer. Service was good and staff extremely friendly. And all this for a very reasonable price also :)

We waited fifteen minutes for a cup of black coffee. Twice we were offered a cappuccino instead, something we didn't order. Extremely crowded on a saturday but its real nice sunny seatings outside if you are lucky enough to catch a table.

Busy even on a cold wet day. Very relaxing feel with a mix of locals and tourists (individuall or very small groups). The staff were very busy and working hard but service was good - no delays. It has the standard Dutch café menu but nicely executed. The fresh mint tea came with pieces of ginger, as did the pumpkin... More

The food was delicious and staff very pleasant and plentiful, so I can only assume that organisation needs to be addressed, here. I realise it was busy, a sunny weekend and all of the extenuating circumstances that prevailed but 50 minutes after sitting down is too long to wait for soup, especially when a member of staff was free to... Café Thijssen is great to stop for a hot chocolate or quick lunch and there are lots of tables in the sun or a nice communal table inside, it is a very Dutch place but welcoming to tourists. Nice quick and cheap food and many healthy or vegetarian options. They have hundreds of magazines to read, shame they never have... More

Staying in Jordaan

Neighborhood Profile
Jordaan
One of Amsterdam’s most preferred outdoor markets and some of the city’s favorite watering holes are but two of the many reasons to save ample time for a stroll through this especially convivial warren of narrow streets with its unfair share of quirky shops and quality galleries. Historically a haven for the working class and emigrants, these days the Jordaan is better known as an enclave for artists and designers. As popular as the Jordaan is as a destination for locals and out-of-towners alike, the area never feels particularly touristy or overrun with outsiders. A highlight even for long-time Jordaan residents, be sure to accept any invitation to step within one of the area’s beloved courtyards or to have a sneak peek inside one of its many working studios.
