a suggestion and a reservation from our hotel concierge sent us to this delightful retreat from the chaos of the red light district. The reception was warm, the service friendly and attentive the the food was outstanding. We sat upstairs within easy viewing of the kitchen. It was like home.

A true gem in the red light district. A very limited menu, but it was everything I hoped for - and more. There was a three or four course option. We chose four courses - and sampled all of the options. While everything was tasty, the highlights were the lamb tartar, shrimp bisque, and Dover sole. If the chocolate soufflé... More

An absolute delight. We dined in the small outdoor area and had a terrific meal and experience. We had the fixed 4 course menu and enjoyed every one. Our server, Steven, was knowledgable, friendly and efficient. Portion size was perfect for so many courses. Also offered is a 3 course menu. Blue tablecloths make the atmosphere fresh and comfortable. Don't... More

Had a lovely dinner at Blauw aan de Wal after not having been here in many years. We started with some very fresh and delicious oysters and then moved on to a four course dinner. Great dishes such as the goat cheese in papillotte and a terrific risotto stood out as well as a fresh and fantastic dover sole. Food... More

Took me a bit to locate it, but so happy I did! A quiet hidden little gem tucked away in the midst of the craziness of the Red Light district. Altogether delightful - from the amuse bouche to the cheese plate I had for dessert. Great food, wine and service. I was traveling on business but will definitely be back... More

Dinner for 2 in court yard outside on a summer Saturday evening - perfect. Relaxed and calm environment. Friendly staff and amazing food; bit limited in choice if your fussy like me. Fabulous wine list. A must to visit if not just to experience the difference one little alley way can make.

Everything I ordered was beautifully presented, perfectly executed, and absolutely delicious. The only thing better than the fantastic food was the phenomenal service. Like the other waiters there, the waiter who had primary responsibility for my table was courteous, efficient and professional. But, he was also extremely warm and helpful and delightfully personable. Just stellar. So excellent. So welcoming. Very... More

I have eaten here about 5 times over the last 10 years and I would reccommend it to everyone looking for a special place to eat. The location may seem off the beaten track but once you enter the small alley leading to the spacious garden and restaurant you will encounter an oasis like experience. A little bit like when... Don't let the area scare you off. The restaurant is located in the middle of the Red Light district but it is so worth a visit. We were a party of 6, one person has several food allergies but everything was great. We were seated immediatley on the second floor, if you have difficulties walking ask for a table on... More

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighborhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
