My husband came across this restaurant while he was wandering about as I was shopping. We came back for dinner, and were quickly seated at a table, even though we didn't have a reservation. We ordered the 5-course fixed price meal, and were delighted to be able to sample a variety of dishes. Staff was attentive, and we could tell... More

We were staying at a nearby hotel and asked the concierge to recommend a restaurant. He recommended one 2 blocks away. It was 90 degrees that day and this restaurant had no air conditioning and only one window that opened to get fresh air. There was only one table occupied and they looked very warm. We looked across the street... More

We visited on the 2/10/2016 for a birthday celebration for our mom. We arrived at 6:00 pm and there were no customers at the restaurant yet. Our family of four sat and ordered the food as usual. The waiters appeared without the smile. As I am from London, I thought it could be a cultural thing, as we know, Dutch... More

Gebr. Hartering offers a la carte, 5-, or 7-course tasting menus; having read innumerable reviews beforehand all vouching for the tasting menu, we opted for the 5-course menu and were not disappointed. (The 7-course menu would have added a cheese and prime rib [apparently their signature dish] course.). The first 3 courses were for sharing -- in our case, a... More

My friends had been recommended to try the restaurant and we weren't disappointed. The 7 course taster was varied and different. The rosemary smoked beef was something else. The salted cod much better than I thought it would be. The octopus cooked to perfection and who knew cabbage could be so delicious. A great selection of wines to pare with... More

Try to get a table downstairs, or even on the canal barge outside the windows (weather permitting). Terrific atmosphere. One preset multi-course menu, but excellent cuisine. This restaurant is more expensive than many others in the area, but a great place to try for a special occasion.

The restaurant is intimate, aromatic, and energetic. The menu primarily features five to seven courses; a la carte options are available. The prices are not low, but the food is worth it. The preparations are fresh and creative, and the portions are respectable. The menu changes regularly, and local ingredients are valued. The menu is in Dutch, but the waiters... More

We really enjoyed our early dinner during a recent trip to Amsterdam. We had 7 courses (buffalo mozzarella with sea vegetables, raw fresh anchovies, kolerabbe with hazelnuts, roasted cabbage with almonds and soy butter, rabbit, cacao ice cream, steak and cheese). We also got the sushimi style makarel and bone marrow. Everything was really delicious and the anchovies were incredibly... More

Although we expected great things here based on prior Tripadvisor ratings, we did not have that good experience. We arrived for our 9PM reservation, and found that a couple of menu items that we would have liked were no longer available. So we settled for the steak for 2 - full of gristle and not very good). As starters we... More

Staying in Plantage & the East

Neighborhood Profile
Plantage & the East
The eastern edge of central Amsterdam provides visitors with the chance to imagine the city that Rembrandt called home (and to tour his historic house) while shopping like the thriftiest of locals at Waterlooplein’s massive flea market, or even enjoying a craft beer beside the tallest wooden windmill in The Netherlands. This verdant, serene, and stately part of town is home to Artis Royal Zoo, one of Europe’s oldest (and still best kept) zoos, and Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. It's also an ideal setting for the Dutch outpost of St Petersburg’s Hermitage.
