Raw herring was a highlight I was looking forward to on my trip to Amsterdam. In my sampling, Rob Wigboldus Vishandel was most definitely the best. I loved the herring and the setting - friendly shopkeeper, amazing and amusing pictures on the walls of whole herrings dangling suggestively in front of open mouths, and Madonna was playing on the radio!... We ate both herring and eel with onion and pickles and both sandwiches were amazing. We tried this dutch specialty also in other places but here was the best. The guy who served us the food was very nice and jovial and the price was very decent: 16 euros for 4 sandwiches and a small beer.

It's not easy to find, but that's part of the charm. This a great example of local tradition and I loved it. I enjoy good fish, local charm, friendly service - it's all there. You can't really say you've experienced Amsterdam without visiting a place like this.

Fish may not be your thing. Herring may not be your thing. But it's in the guidebook as a must try and I was glad I did. It was not too fishy, it was freshly made, it was interesting, it only cost 4 euros. Friendly service.

I know my fish, especially herring.. This place is the best for herring, smoked makarel and cod!!! Tried a couple of other places, but they were not even close! Oh, did I mention the best pricing on herring et al compared to all the other places..

There are only three tables here. It isn't a restaurant or a cafe, it's a place that sells prepared fish and simple fish meals, and that has a few tables where you can eat. The herring here is simply excellent, very fresh and very tasty. We had herring on rolls with onions and gherkins and they were fantastic, and excellent... More

To have a full experience in Amsterdam, you have to eat the haring sandwich! At Rob Wigboldus Vishandel, you can have a delicious sandwich for only 3euros! They also have other seafood. The owner is really nice and the place is very local style!

The best place to eat the real sandwich with cucumber, onion and haring! It could sound strange, but trust the "chef": he will take you in a real Amsterdam food experience!

Rob's fish shop is tucked away in the Zoutsteeg, a small since street between Damrak and Nieuwendijk (near Dam square). It is about as traditional as it gets: a small space, two basic wooden tables, with Rob behind a display counter with fish. Rob is very friendly and always in for a funny comment or two. Take the fresh (salted)... More

Neighborhood Profile
Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.
