As regular, but infrequent visitors (we live in Den Haag) my wife and I have been enjoying De Waaghals for 5+ years. The food, service and ambience are always great, but last year's Christmas menu was superb. Long may it continue - it's a national treasure!

This is a vegetarian restaurant that I have visited before. Excellent meal with leisurely but friendly service, good and varied beers and wines and a cat! There are few frills but who needs them? What's not to like?

Although we understood 95% of the menu in Dutch we struggled with a couple of items and the waiter quickly brought us the menu in English. The food was creative, different (in a good sense) and delicious. Definitely has an Asian influence in the cooking and it is not a veg and two veg sort of place. Good sized portions... More

This is as far as I know the first real vegetarian restaurant in Amsterdam. We have been here numerous times and they remain serving the same wonderful meals. It was a pleasure going back there, the service was kind and quick and the atmosphere pleasant. We like to congratulate them for staying in business for such a long time.

I am not an ideological vegetarian, but I also do not share the ideology that a good meal must include meat or fish. The good news about this restaurant is that the menu lacks the "veggie sausage" and "soy schnitzel" type of items. Rather, it lists a number of straight vegetarian dishes, some of them even vegan. The bad news... More

My sister and I found this place after wandering around Amsterdam for hours, looking for somewhere to eat. By the time we sat down (after the chef grudgingly let us inside - even at 8:30pm) we were ravenous, but a little shocked at the steep prices. We both ordered the Thai green curry (at 13 euros a head, the cheapest... More

Myself and 5 friends visited the restaurant. Our experience was a real mixed bag. Two of us ordered the Thai green curry, myself included. Mine, unfortunately was the worst Thai green curry ive ever had, and I have it a lot! The sauce tasted like it had been watered down and the tofu was incredibly salty which made the whole... More

The restaurant looks nice and is welcomming (also for dogs). The serving was chaotic. We waited for an hour between first course and the main dish. We were five and had two different dishes. None of us liked the food very much. Four of us left allmost half of the serving, yet we were not asked as to why. First... More

Another recommendation in my guidebook - I am not a vegetarian but as I felt my diet in the last week lacked goodness I thought this would be the perfect option to get some vegetables in my system. I love the street this restaurant is on (Frans Halsstraat), very cool suburb location (near Heineken factory) - lots of restaurants and... More

Staying in De Pijp

Neighborhood Profile
De Pijp
Bustling Albert Cuypstraat serves as the main drag through De Pijp and the location for Albert Cuyp Market, the largest and most famous of Amsterdam’s many outdoor markets. Beyond this sometimes-frantic thoroughfare, tiny lanes beckon urban explorers in search of the latest trends and hidden gems. Nearly half the residents living in De Pijp are foreigners and a good number of them are students. Here you'll find a multitude of ethnic restaurants, great cafes and bars, and a brilliant array of locally owned shops, all catering to a broad range of budgets and tastes.
