I've been to Eetcafe Singel 404 alot times over the years and always enjoyed it. Fresh delicious food at a reasonable price, perfect for lunch! Particularly nice during the summer. The service is always fast and friendly. My favourite place to grab lunch in the...city.More

We used to look forward to go here but it appears as if there is new management or ownership. Different menu and more expensive.

We have been coming here for years. We loved the place. This time everything was just so average. I got the oven melted goat cheese sandwich with brown bread. The taste was just not delicious. It used to be sooo good. Bread was not crispy...goat cheese was not really melted just nothing interesting. Prices went up and most ridiculous is that we asked for a glass of tap water and they told us they only serve tap water if you order a drink. Lol. In the end they indeed changed the owner. There was nothing magic as it was before nothing special. Won’t come back.More

Too many tables, not enough staff, incorrect orders being given to customers, food & drinks never arrived and were told to be patient cause it was busy. Many other options in Amsterdam.

The staff immediately impressed me by how friendly and welcoming they are - they all took the time to say hello and to welcome us. The female waitress who served us was also wonderful, giving us help with the drinks menu and helping us pick...out the beer we would best like. Then the food - fantastic! You get a great portion and the choices are wonderful. Very delicious and a very lovely atmosphere and experience. Definitely a must for any tourist/couple in Amsterdam!More

The restaurant serves quick meals, basically hot and cold sandwiches and they are good. The staff needs to be more prepared to work during busy times.

We stopped here for a late lunch after reading reviews. Service was quite slow but the waiter was nice and friendly. We ordered the Brie sandwich and bacon and chicken sandwich both on delicious white sourdough bread. The Brie one was best. We did have...to wait a while for the sandwiches and when they arrived one of them was wrong. They were very apologetic and gave us a complimentary round of drinks. It’s a quirky little place with nice food, but isn’t the cleanest. Would go back for the Brie sandwich again thoughMore

Walked in and were told to get out of the aisle, but we were waiting for people to leave a table. Once the server, Ben, realized that, he warmed up to us. We were seated at a small table downstairs. Ben said he was new...to the job and ended up being a very nice, freindly and helpful waiter. I had an Affligem beer which really hit the spot. I also got an arugula salad which was great, since I've been eating so much bread. They don't usually have salads, but I was told to pick a sandwich and they would make it into a salad. Very accommodating. The rest of the group had wurst and sandwiches. Did try some of the other's frites. Always yummy. Everything was tasty with just the right flavors.More

Cute little place with cat and dog roaming around, lots of locals and charming atmosphere. The servers really ration the bread served with good chicken soup and charge for refills of tea!

This was a good stop. Lunch with friends on a windy and rainy day. Good selections in menu, quickly served, a lot of food! Great lunchplace!

We followed the good reviews, and were suitably impressed. That is, we went for a late breakfast, and we both had the special ... toast with 2 eggs, salmon, and avocado. Every detail was executed perfectly: the egg was fried to perfection, and the salmon...was great. The service was friendly, and we could not ask more from a breakfast.More

Of the various restaurants I’d identified as potential stops during my 3-day whirlwind tour of Amsterdam, the Singel 404 proved to be the only eatery I’d manage to get to. Located along the picturesque western canal ring that runs along the Singel, the aptly named...Singel 404 is a popular spot. With its simple menu, reasonable prices and generous portions, it’s easy to see how and why this quaint little breakfast-lunch-brunch café is so popular. For me, when I stumbled upon the café during the course of my research, the Singel 404 appeared to represent everything I pictured Amsterdam to be in the autumn: A charming little café, serving healthy eats, along the popular canal belt lined with bicycles. When I arrived, I wasn’t let down by my earlier presumptions. Right from the outset, I loved the look of this place: A small table for two was set just outside the “Singel 404” signage, no doubt making for a romantic autumn brunch. “Charming,” I thought. Once inside, I admit to being a little surprised by how compact the space is, but then I’d subsequently learn that a lot of cafes in Amsterdam follow a similar model. Regardless, I didn’t experience a wait for a table. My server was pleasant, though not overly chatty or intrusive, which I appreciated. After browsing the menu, I decided to keep things a little light and, following some advice I read in an early review, settled on a “Dutch apple pie” and fruit smoothie. As I waited for my order, I couldn’t help but sit back and admire the hustle and bustle of this tiny place. Patrons and servers alike seemed to be having a good time – the former enjoying their meals and company; the latter taking joy in the service aspect. All told, it made for a lively and enjoyable atmosphere to be part of. In any event, my food arrived in good time. The smoothie was nicely chilled, a bit tart, but refreshing. The accompanying “Dutch apple pie” was a thing of beauty: Served warm with two scoops of creamy vanilla ice cream (topped with cinnamon) and a fresh raspberry, the apple pie tasted absolutely divine. The streusel topping wasn’t overly sweet and carried a light crunch; meanwhile, the golden raisins complemented the natural acidity of the apples and spice of cinnamon. I don’t say this often, or easily, but this was definitely one of the best pies I’ve had the pleasure of eating. FOOD: 5/5 SERVICE: 4/5 VALUE: 5/5 RECOMMENDATION: The Singel 404 is quaint. It’s picturesque and its offerings are delicious. If you’re visiting Amsterdam and want a healthy, moderately priced bite to eat, then this one comes highly recommended. Thumbs up!
