Saw this fantastic building whilst on one of the Canal cruises. It looked really good, so we went out of our way to find it. Not an easy process when you don't know what it is called or where it really is. We eventually got there and; The best terrace was shut. The bar was closing early. There was a... More

We stopped here by chance and thought it looked appealing for a drink - we weren't disappointed. The beer was great and the staff were friendly and quick.

A nice place to sit and chill outside watching the boat world go buy on the canal, one or two near misses on the lock! and some folk will give you a wave back (a lot of miserable tourists out there!). Beer and snacks were very good and the staff very friendly, would recommend.

Really warm and cosy pub in a nice location which just happens to serve very reasonably priced drinks. I would recommend it.

Wonky old canal house next to a canal lock (hence the name: Sluyswacht comes from Sluyswachterhuisje (lockhouse) in Dutch) with charming-cute interior and sunny terrace that also serves up a very good Dutch apple pie.

Sit next to the canal and watch the neverending queue of all kinds of boats/rafts/water vehicles go by. Wave to bypassers and be prepared to appear on many photos as numerous tourist boats pass. Drinks are quite cheap but staff rather confused and stressed, so go inside to order and carry out your drinks yourself and avoid the typical 45-minute... More

We had a fantastic night here. The outdoor area is right on the canal and makes you feel like you are on a boat. You can wave to boats as they pass you. The drinks are the cheapest we have found yet. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back!

The pub is just opposite the Rembrandt Museum, opens at 12.30. Its building is really lovely, from the XVII th century, it has two terraces and great view- not to mention the drinks. It was really lovely to relax on its terrace and see the boats go by.

Walking home from a day of touring and stopped in for a drink. Knew it from a canal tour the day prior so always fun to hang for a few minutes in such a unique place! Had a drink, a beautiful view outside and lovely place.

Staying in Plantage & the East

Neighborhood Profile
Plantage & the East
The eastern edge of central Amsterdam provides visitors with the chance to imagine the city that Rembrandt called home (and to tour his historic house) while shopping like the thriftiest of locals at Waterlooplein’s massive flea market, or even enjoying a craft beer beside the tallest wooden windmill in The Netherlands. This verdant, serene, and stately part of town is home to Artis Royal Zoo, one of Europe’s oldest (and still best kept) zoos, and Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. It's also an ideal setting for the Dutch outpost of St Petersburg’s Hermitage.
