Surinam experience

Not what we imagined and perhaps a little off putting for some, but put that to one side and enjoy the experience. Spang Makanda is small and every table was occupied when we arrived. A Dutch couple got up to leave and so we took their places alongside another diner. He gave us some tips and... read more

Went here on the recommendation of a Singapore food blogger, but was underwhelmed. There goes the theory that someone from SE Asia would pcck out decent Asian food. The food ws served in large portions but not real Indonesian fare, for instance the satay came with peanut butter and not the satay sauce you get back in SE Asia. A... More

First, the setting is great. It's small, it's cozy, it's warm. The service is good as well. Friendly and accommodating. You may be asked to share a table, but I think that is part of the charm. The food; Restaurants that boast a combination of Indonesian and Surinamese tends to do the Surinamese better. Spang Makandra is not an exception.... More

Been to Spang Makandra 3 times by now for its nice food, but it will be my last. All three times I've been there for lunch, so I don't know how it is in the evenings. The guy that works there in the afternoon is rude and delivers really poor service. It's a shame coz I like the food as... More

The hotel staff recommended the restaurant which specialized in Surinamese food. First time with Surinamese food for me - but definitely not the last if it is always this good. Recommend the special - which is plenty of food.

A humble and small restaurant with wonderful atmosphere and lots of dishes. Prices are the best thing here, after the food, by not saving on portion size. I would recommand fried rice with chicken filet and pom. Perfect spiciness. When my friends and I were finished eating, I wanted to stay longer enjoying this lovely place by ordering mint tea.... Delicious soups for lunchtime, big amount but easy to digest and go on working afterwards. Great rendang, lamb roti and gado gado for dinner. I prefer to sit in the restaurant at lunch time when it's more quiet and at dinner time when its very very busy I do the takeaway. I highly recommend the place. Diego

Great varieties of choice from rice, noodle, soup and sandwiches. If you want to try all-in-one taste of the indian food, you can order the Special. Indeed, it can serve 2-3 persons but surely you can have it all. The taste was good and authentic. I am sure you can leave the restaurant with satisfaction and a big tummy. The... More

Staying in De Pijp

Neighborhood Profile
De Pijp
Bustling Albert Cuypstraat serves as the main drag through De Pijp and the location for Albert Cuyp Market, the largest and most famous of Amsterdam’s many outdoor markets. Beyond this sometimes-frantic thoroughfare, tiny lanes beckon urban explorers in search of the latest trends and hidden gems. Nearly half the residents living in De Pijp are foreigners and a good number of them are students. Here you'll find a multitude of ethnic restaurants, great cafes and bars, and a brilliant array of locally owned shops, all catering to a broad range of budgets and tastes.
