Tucked away in a quiet side street in De Pijp in Amsterdam is this gem of a place. If anyone wants to experience proper South African hospitality and just the yummiest food - go no further. I went here for the Sunday Braai (BBQ) and it definitely did not disappoint. ALL the food was just amazing and I will surely... More

We learned about Tjing Tjing by reading through some stories from a recently published book called Flavors of Life, which describes the personal stories of a very diverse group of restaurateurs who have all ended up in Amsterdam, coming from all corners of the world. We were interested to visit some of the restaurants, and have been very happy with... More

I went there a few times during my trips to Amsterdam and the hospitality is amazing and the food is incredible. The last time I was there I had the chilli steak and it was out of this world. Michael, the owner and chef is always around to help and recommend.

We ate here on our first night in Amsterdam. Very friendly staff welcomed us as we entered. We were given a plate of very nice small herb bread rolls and soft cheese to eat while we selected our order. The only African meat they had was Ostrich, and my wife was offered kangaroo which she found to be a bit... More

excellent varied and traditional menu, Chef most ably managed to feed 15 revelling guests each with their own menu requests. service was slick and staff were extremely attentive. This calls for a return visit time and time again

This establishment has been around for several years and is a firm favourite among the Southern African community in Amsterdam, and also attracts many locals - all down to its authenticity. The decor is an eclectic mix of contemporary and slightly zany African style. The menu offers a wide range of traditional South African dishes, as well as classics adapted... More

Have been here several times now. Every time is joy. In Summer time they have a braai (bbq) in their garden also music performances. Their products are always fresh. They bake their own bread. And the staff are lovely!! a Must go!

Had another excellent meal here. The restaurant is in a quiet street in an old part of Amsterdam ("De Pijp"), about a 10 minute walk from the Concertgebouw (and Rijksmuseum). The small restaurant is simply, but tastefully, decorated. South African dishes include Cape Malay, rural dishes, and game (ostrich, springbok, kudu). All dishes are well prepared. The wine list is... More

This is not a fine dine restaurant but more a cosy place with a feeling of dinning at someones house. The service is friendly and personal and even the restaurant cat, called Hero, is paying the customers attention. I had the ostrich which was fresh and one of the best meats I ever had. It melted in my mouth. My... More

Tjing-Tjing has very friendly staff and a nice selection of South-African dishes and wines. The restaurant has a nice and relaxed atmosphere, with a sofa near the entrance. Not at a "standard" location. Definitely worth a visit.

Staying in De Pijp

Neighborhood Profile
De Pijp
Bustling Albert Cuypstraat serves as the main drag through De Pijp and the location for Albert Cuyp Market, the largest and most famous of Amsterdam’s many outdoor markets. Beyond this sometimes-frantic thoroughfare, tiny lanes beckon urban explorers in search of the latest trends and hidden gems. Nearly half the residents living in De Pijp are foreigners and a good number of them are students. Here you'll find a multitude of ethnic restaurants, great cafes and bars, and a brilliant array of locally owned shops, all catering to a broad range of budgets and tastes.
