We had booked an à la cart dinner at the restaurant on 28 February 2022 and had a lovely greeting. The wood panelled dining room with candelabra is very attractive. The menu is fairly short, which I think is a good sign, and we ordered...starters and mains. We were brought an amuse bouche of a macaron with goose liver mousse which was really interesting and delicious, but having taken one small bite, our starters arrived almost simultaneously. That seemed a bit odd and rather spoilt the enjoyment of the macaron. My starter of lobster bisque was lovely however my husband’s salad was underwhelming. When the mains arrived, my husband’s veal was completely cold and it was a minute or two before we could attract the attention of the staff and send it back to the kitchen. There was no offer to take away my main course of “wild cauliflower” (is that a thing?) so that we could both eat at the same time. By the time my husband’s main returned, “with the sincere apologies of the chef”, probably about 10 minutes later, I had completely finished eating. This left them with a dilemma of whether to clear my plate or leave it. In the event they left it for a while and then cleared it whilst my husband continued with his main. His re-served meat was up to temperature and he finished the dish, though found it rather lacking in a suitable garnish. We then ordered an ice cream and a coffee. We were seated at a dividing partition with very tall beautiful candelabra about 60+ cm tall placed on it. The waitress squeezed behind chairs serving another group at the table the other side of the partition and knocked it so that a candle (fortunately unlit) came crashing down onto our table. The candelabra itself rocked perilously - had it fallen we would have been showered with broken glass from the contents of our table. There was a small apology that could so easily be damned with faint praise. When the bill came, we were naturally interested to see what adjustment had been made. Not even faint praise this time. Was there a small sweetener on the bill? If you count two boiled sweets, yes, otherwise not so much as a single coffee was deducted. We are not expecting to return any time soon.More

There is something very special about a meal in the charming wooden clad dining room of the Schonegg. I have been coming to Wengen for many years and a meal there is always cherished. Our whole meal was exquisite, always delicious to enjoy venison in...season. I must mention they are also known for their wonderful bread selection, as a coeliac I would typically only smell it, but at the Schonegg their gluten-free selection paired with their butter should not be skipped!More

My boyfriend and I wanted to eat and drink something there but one of the staff treated us very disrespectfully, so we were leaving the restaurant without an order. I've never been treated so disrespectfully in a restaurant before...

We have been going to Wengen for over 15 years and the main restaurant at the Schonegg is always on the list of places where we will go for at least one dinner and probably a couple of lunches if we're in the village and...not skiing. In the main restaurant the food quality is always excellent, with a good wine list and good service. The menu offers a rare opportunity to have fine dining Swiss food and they do it well. My only caveat would be that there are very few light options so make sure you have an appetite when you go!More

Hotel Schonegg is a wonderful hotel to use when you get to Wengen. Its located spitting distance from the train station. The people working here are very helpful and friendly. Just outside is a supermarket for the stuff the kids need !

The food was so good I ate dinner here 6 nights in a row! I have an MSG allergy (Geschmacksverstärker) which can be challenging in Switzerland with the high use of Maggi and Knorr prepared sauces and packaged flavoring. The Schönegg cooks only from scratch...with high quality fresh herbs and spices and the quality of meat and fish was excellent. Waitstaff were knowledgable, friendly and attentive. Their wine recommendations were perfect. If the weather is good, try eating on the gorgeous terrace. Spectacular views.More

After eating at the restaurant our first night, we just had to return the next evening. Kurt, the host, was so knowledgeable, warm and welcoming. He made our meal just the more magical. The food was fantastic and fresh. Our stay at the hotel was...lovely as well. The rooms were very traditional Swiss and our view of the town and mountains were beautiful. The staff was very polite and helpful. Thank you for making the Bernese Oberland area unforgettable!!More

Hotel Schonegg was just incredible. If you’re visiting Wengen then you can’t beat the location, rooms, service or food. The view is by far the best in Wengen! We opted for half board (dinner included) for one night only since we didn’t know what to...expect, but our first night’s dinner quickly convinced us to add dinner to some of our other nights as well. Being foodies, we tried several restaurants in Wengen, and while they were great (Da Sina for pizza!), nothing beat the quality and service of Schonegg’s restaurant. If you’re a fan of fine dining and wine tasting, then this is it. During our last night Kurt, the manager on site, was just delightful his service and attention to detail was the best. Two points: I’ll be sad to leave tomorrow and it’s rare that I review a place before I’ve even checked out! We initially booked a smaller room since it was all that was available. When the larger junior suite opened up we opted to book it for rest of our stay. Couldn’t have made a better choice. The junior suite was amazing. Beautiful view and awesome bathroom. Having said that though, the smaller room was just exquisite and I would’ve been just as happy there. The balcony with flowers was just beautiful in the smaller room. We travel a lot and this is one of the few places that we would definitely want to visit again just to relive the views, food and service. Beautiful!More

We booked the restaurant to celebrate our anniversary 'in style', unfortunately our experience started off on entirely the wrong foot when we arrived and the waitress had no clue about our online reservation. Oh dear. I had to prove my credentials by showing her the...confirmation email from earlier that day. I booked the restaurant because it was listed as the number 3 best place to eat in Wengen. On our visit, this overall rating was very much better than our experience I am sorry to say. The waiting staff seemed badly inexperienced, unable to offer us anything like the excellent level of service referred to in other reviews that prompted us to eat there. Again, this was a huge disappointment, especially when you consider the price you are paying for their food. The starters were actually pretty good, if somewhat expensive for what arrived on the table but the main course was a catastrophic disappointment. The entrecote steak was akin to a thinly sliced bit of pre-packed £4 ribeye beef from Aldi and nothing like what I was expecting for €52. The few bits of veg and sauce was very nice but the steak was pathetic in the extreme. I would have complained but I would have received a beating from my wife and I genuinely think the clueless waiting staff would have had no idea about what to do. I decided to restrict my feedback to 'it was ok' when asked if I enjoyed my meal. To any normal waiter thus should be a red flag, but not here. Oh well. I guess they have a steady stream of customers who will scoff whatever is served to them without murmuring. I was invited to have a desert and I was going to order a creme brulee (at €14) but after being ignored on several occasions by all staff for 20 minutes in a 75% empty restaurant we elected to vote with our feet. Maybe we just had a bad experience? Probably. But at €190 for two, I feel badly ripped off. Perhaps I shouldn't trust TripAdvisor reviews so easily? Every rule has an exception doesn't it. For me, I could eat at the Eiger Restaurant three times for what I paid here and I would be happy and have a very full tummy. Avoid the 1903 restaurant at The Schoenegg Hotel.....unless you have more money than sense (or taste). Sorry.More

We were impressed with how friendly our waitress was and she had a good sense of humor. We also had two visits from who I presume was the owner asking saying to enjoy our food. They provided us an English menu and treated our teens...with respect. This was one of our favorite restaurants during our visit to Wengen and just a five minute walk from the train station.More

This restaurant was recommended to us from a local, and it was wonderful. We had lunch on the Terrace overlooking the gorgeous alp beauty. Service was great, food was wonderful, especially the chicken, potatoes, zucchini special that includes wine, coffee for 25 Swiss francs. After...you get off the train at the station, just walk about a block down the Main Street and you will see the Schonegg. Also you might walk over to the beautiful chapel next door. The view from there is incredible, all the way to the bottom of the Lauterbrunnen Valley!More

We stayed here in January. The hotel is well designed, atmospheric with an excellent restaurant. It has a nice club room for residents and they lit the fire for us one night. It's close to the lifts and the staff are friendly. It's good value....My only complaint would be that all the hallways have timed light sensors which click on and off the whole time to save electricity. You can hear them do this from inside your room. I'd go back only next time with some ear plugs!More

I hardly know where to begin. From the moment we arrived by train in Wengen to our departure 8 days later, the service was always exceptional and genuine. We were picked up by cart promptly and luggage (skis included) transported to the hotel. Our room...was as promised on hotels.com, balcony with mountain facing views - just exceptional and lovely to see the sun setting in the afternoon with a glass of wine when it wasn't snowing in picturesque Wengen. While the bathroom was very very small, the shower pressure was awesome and hot water ample which is appreciated when skiing. We overlooked this as Paul was gracious and upgraded our bed to a larger size than booked (we didn't ask for this, it was done prior to our arrival). The sheets are very comfortable, turn down service nightly and room was cleaned promptly every day without any issues! This location is superb. You can walk easily to the train and are right there with main street, just a 2-3 minute ski to the tram which opens at 8:15am should you so choose to be first on the lift. The breakfast was excellent and whatever coffee you like made to order. We ate in 1903 three times and the food was the best we had during our 10 days in Switzerland. The Creamy watercress soup – potato, dried meat was divine. I could have that for dinner every night. We both had Lamb carrée with herb crust – potato gratin, beans, thyme jus. The lamb was cooked perfectly (not easy to do in my opinion), the potatoes were so tasty. We both had this meal twice. I also had the Apple tart on rum cream twice and I wish I could replicate this at home. Any reservation we requested or info we needed, the staff provided. The sauna is beautiful and super clean. The decor of the rooms and restaurant is classic Swiss and you will not find better anywhere in Wengen is my guess. When it comes to the restaurant, I am perplexed how this is not rated #1 as we ate at many other places including Hotel Baren and the food, service and ambience didn't even come close to 1903. On the day of departure, the porter came on early so he could transport our bags and skis to catch the 7:03am train on a day of heavy snow. Of course, he was there right on time and had our skis all loaded prior to us adding the other bags. The entire staff was always friendly and professional. If you are going to Wengen, this is the place to stay and eat and relax. Thank you Paul and team for making our trip exceptional. I hope we can come back someday to this beautiful valley and we would always choose to stay with you.More

We have been going to the Schonegg for years and have recently enjoyed amazing meals from the two previous chefs and fantastic service from the management and their teams. Sadly the new restaurant manager does not have the temperament for a 4 to 5 star...establishment. And the menu is particularly uninspiring. The pork 'rip' (no idea what this English translation is supposed to mean) was a very cheap cut of meat that arrived cold. This was probably because it took 1 hour and 15 minutes for this to arrive after ordered. Although the waiting staff are very pleasant they look a mess with shirts hanging out and everyone wearing their own mismatched trainers. What a change from previous years. Because it is such a lovely environment it is a shame that the standards have dropped so low. We took friends and were embarrassed at the whole experience. It was obvious that the new restaurant manager is out of his depth. He did not have the temperament or organisation skills to handle the situation. We realise that this is a new situation for him and the team but it does not excuse the chaos that we experienced on a not very busy night. Sadly we won't be returning this season. I imagine that most of the locals who go once and are as disappointed as we were won't be returning either. We have already heard from other friends about their negative experiences. A real shame.More
