Today, Friday August 21st 2020 my wife and I had dinner in Papei for the 3rd time this Holiday. The food, wine and service were excellent, every time. I tipped accordingly. Today the bill was 126,50 euro and I wanted to tip 20 euro, but I only had a 50 euro note. I always pay tips cash and the bill by bank card, Papei is used to this method. At the cash register I asked the wiater 30 euro back, but then the owner interfered. He was furious, how can I pay with 50 euro when the bill is 126,50? He shouted at mewaved his arms around in a fury and he nearly hit me. Two of the waiters who served us, knew from experience what I wanted, so I asked them to explain to the boss. He yelled at me some more, viciously. Then returned 40 euro. I said, no no, 30 euro back please. He went crazy, he nearly blacked out. The waiters were ashamed by the extremely bad behaviour of their boss and explained again. After 5 minutes sheer torture I finally got my 30 euro and paid the bill by bank card. I asked the woner: Are you happy now? I can recommend the food, everything, the wines, the service by the waiters, but be careful with the owner. He might attack you for over tipping!

This restaurant was recommended by the agrotourismo where we were staying. The waiter was outstanding - pointing us to the best food for our tastes, and even cancelling a second course when he saw that we had over ordered (he was right). My wife and I both had the Pici all'aglione, which was about the best pasta dish we'd ever had. Everything, dessert, wine, service, appetizers was incredible. Could not recommended more highly.

Living in Siena half of the year, this is a consistent favorite. The outside eating space in Piazza Mercato behind the Piazza del Campo is delightful, inside it old and rustic. The grilled meats and pastas are very good, but we end up eating our favorites, my husband the pheasnat in raisin sauce and me the duck breast in black pepper sauce. We usually start with the papparadelle al cinghale. The dessert selection looks fabulous, but I'm a sucker for panna cotta and theirs is the best in Siena. Great house wine. Service is slow, but that's the Tuscan way! You get the table for the night to enjoy your meal, the food is freshly prepared and takes some time, you will not be rushed, just ask for the check when ready to leave.

I didn't feel safe eating in this restaurant due to the complete disregard for Coronavirus precautions. Several of the staff were not wearing masks, even when in close proximity and speaking over us at the table. The parmesan bowl was passed around three different tables by the waiters as we watched, with upwards of 10 other people sitting talking over it just during that 20 minute period. On top of all of this our waiter was rude and the food was very average. There must be far better alternatives in Siena, would avoid.

I really don't get why there are so many good reviews. The waitress was rude (she literally threw the bag of complimentary bread on our table while on her way to another table). My ravioli seemed microwaved and what I thought would ve a butter sauce was actually just 5 drops os butter. My husband ordered the chicken thigh and it was completely overcooked (dry and hard). He was also surprised to see nothing else came on the plate (not a problem per se, but the waitress was so uninterested she didn't bother informing him or asking him if he wanted a side). My lemon soda came warm. Reading the reviews here, it really seems like I went to an entirely different restaurant.

everything was basic. at the begining we shared some ragout pasta that i could have made when I was 7 years old. Then, we shared a big portion of t-bone that was poorly done and the quality of the dish was clearly missing, the taste was average and was disappointing according to price. The wine was amazing( poliziano nobile de montepulciano) even though the waiter made fun of us when choosing it by saying it doesn't matter which wine we choose because we probably don't know enough about this type of drink to notice a difference between them. !!!! What bothered us the most was the gossiping of the staff about us after we noticed a mistake about the bill in the end, that we received after waiting for a really long time. They offered us some limoncello on the house and after we said there was a slight mistake in the bill, the waiter approached another staff member and started to laugh at us in italian, gossiping about us ,thinking we wouldn’t understand but we did. They discussed that the price difference wasn’t big and it’s enough that they already gave us limoncello on the house.

Excellent food, speedy service. We were a group of 10, and we were all served our starters and main meals in under 45min. That’s a record. It’s not a fancy restaurant, and it’s family-friendly. I would highly recommend when in Siena to eat here.

We return here every time we are in Tuscany. The grilled meats, pasta, Bruschetta are all superb. Book well Ahead! Despite the fact it’s a big place, it’s very popular with locals and visitors alike. Friendly and knowledgeable staff, very helpful! Wine is put on your table unprompted “ pay only for what you drink “

We headed here for lunch and loved it! Reasonably priced and fantastic food. There were several little old men locals at the surrounding tables - it was clear that this spot is a local favorite. Would definitely come back!

After a very hot guided tour which ended meters from this place, we took refuge from the heat, exoavting to have a beer and a Diet Coke! We just immediately loved the atmosphere and friendliness and ended up ordering a bottle of wine! Followed by capresse salad and pork ribs. After 5 weeks of travelling through Italy we whiled away a few very pleasant hours here enjoying some of the best food and service of our whole trip creating more wonderful memories. If you are Siena do not miss out on lunch here.

Hi. I do not speak Italian but can stumble through some simple words and sentences. I had visited this restaurant 3 years ago, solo, and enjoyed it. Was in Siena again with 2 companions and thought we could try it out together. It was a week night and dinner time. I did not make reservations, just hoping we could be squeezed in. We don't need prime seating, just a table, some food, and some wine. The older gentleman seemed put off that I didn't have a reservation, and only spoke Italian. He seemed to be "telling me off" and other customers were smiling at it. Who knows what he said. So we politely stepped aside and started looking on the phone for alternatives. A minute later the man came up and got my attention, and directed us to a table. I thanked him and said he was very generous. The waiter was very busy, but we were not in a hurry. We just let him go at his own pace with no demands. He spoke English very well. He was not Italian and I cannot remember his nationality, but je spoke several languages. If you go there look for him. Shaved head. The food was very good. And when finished I asked for Vin Santo and Cantucci. As I recall, the biscotti were compliments of the house. They leave the bottle of Vin Santo at your table and eyeball how much you drink and charge appropriately. The last time I visited, 3 years ago, the Vin Santo was compliments of the house. This is not intended to be a negative review...just an accurate experience. Go and enjoy this place. Just don't be in a hurry, be as polite as can be, and relax. They will take care of you. Oh, and it is not far from the Piazza too, which makes for some nice photos at dusk.

We booked a table for a lunch time in Siena downtown: this place is good and a pleasant stay is granted. We got Pici (Aglione and Cacio/Pepe) very good and tasty, then Cinghiale in umido, tender and tasty. The only negative points about: home wine (so so) and bread (not so good). We were expecting the typical tuscany bread...by the way suggested! Price quite good and very good service.

Had an excellent lunch here. Portions are generous and the service is fast and friendly. Very popular with locals. The tagliatelle al ragù was particularly tasty, and my husband enjoyed the pappardelle al cinghiale. The house red wine was also very good. The outdoor seating area is nice with sufficient space between tables, so that even though it was busy, it didn’t feel overcrowded.

We went to have lunch here during our day trio to Siena, due to a recommendation of my friends friend. The restaurant is located very close to the city center. They have a good selection of typical local cuisine and the food was very good. There are plenty of tables to sit outside, but we were still lucky to get a table. The service was good and the waiter friendly with a typical Italian charm. He even spoke rather good German. All in all a very satisfying experience.

We have travelled all over Italy and we still think this is the best restaurant bar none. I have just returned after 3 years and still love this restaurant. Authentic Italian cooking, in a wonderful setting and absolutely lovely staff. We had Pappardelle with wild boar sauce, rabbit and fillet steak with mushroom sauce followed by home made biscotti and Vin Santo. We chatted with the waiter for ages and had a wonderful time. I really cannot understand the negative comments i have read.
