We had the Cappellacci (filled with ricotta cheese and spinach) with butter and fresh sager our primo course. It was delicious! We could have stopped there. For our secondo, we had their recommended specialty the steak. It was good, but I don't think I would order it again. Frankly, I make better steaks myself on the grill at home. For... More

This traditional Florence cellar restaurant is a must visit for us whenever we make it to Florence. And it didn't disappoint this year. If you've never seen or never tried a true Florentine steak you don't know what your missing! And Buca Mario does it very well. Also the boar sauce pasta is excellent. Wine is very fairly priced and... More

6 adults and 5 kids had dinner here on August 5th to celebrate our 49th wedding anniversary. We had a separate room with a sitting area which was perfect for the kids. The service was exceptional and the food fantastic. We had eaten here 15 years ago--loved it then and were not disappointed this time.

Slightly over priced but not bad. Florentine steaks are huge and the desert trolley is a must. The atmosphere is pleasant but the restaurant has a strange vibe to it and is quite vast. The waiters are pleasant and fluent linguists. The service is as one might expect for the price however the price is slightly higher than average for... More

The food is simply outstanding, especially the “bisteca fiorentina”. And the wine list is comprehensive and enticing. The waiters are extremely professional and service is courteous and effective. The only issue is that there are noisy groups that visit this well-known restaurant and the owner has second thoughts about policing the noisy bunches who had too much wine. If you’re... More

Very nice restaurant with excellent service. Try the zucchini flowers as a side with your steak. We had a great evening there. Would definitely return if in Florence.

At the recommendation of our hotel, we enjoyed dinner here. The service was a little odd (quirky waiters and kind of cheesy/kitchsy vibe) but the food was great, especially the lamb chops which were cooked perfectly. The portions were very large so arrive hungry. The only reason I gave this 4 instead of 5 is because the restaurant is so... More

We were recommended this restaurant by our hotel staff. Easy to find but its in a basement so when the weather is so nice it is off putting. Tables are Close together they pack people in. We ate early and when we were leaving there was a queue to get in. It seemed like it was mainly visitors. The wine... More

This is a great restaurant that I had visited a number of years before. We had to return and this time with our daughter and her husband. The places is cavernous but, fills up quickly. The food is amazing as is the service! I'd recommend something but, everything is good. Avoid the steak unless you like it really rare. Everything... More

We were an hour early for our reservations, but we were sitted and attended to immediately. Our waiter Roberto made some great dining recommendations. The atmosphere, the service and the food made the our dinner there fabulous.

Staying in Santa Maria Novella

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Maria Novella
Santa Maria Novella train station welcomes the majority of the people arriving in Florence, which might explain the hectic pace. Commuters and tourists come across the constant hustle and bustle of the station before exiting, taking a few steps and stopping amazed in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. It is impossible not to admire the the square, housing one of the most charming basilicas in Florence. The area has plenty of local spots to taste Tuscan specialties, but don’t stop in the main streets alone; the narrower side streets always ensure satisfaction. The huge Parco Delle Cascine provides a solution to the need for a green area as well as a historic welcome in the form of a bronze statue of King Vittorio Emanuele II riding a horse.
