The staff are wonderful at Buca Mario. The food is decent, but lacking in Italians is a warning sign. The tables surrounding us were all tourists. Our children's meals came out in 5 minutes. Way too quick. A quick heat and go job. For me a sign of a great restaurant is can we alter the meal or is the... More

Basement restaurant that is much larger than it seems. Still, get reservations as it is always crowded. The food is great, and the Florentine steaks are like half a cow.

Buca Mario was recommended by our hotel reception. What a great recommendation for a romantic dining experience with Tuscan flair. We had an excellent waiter that joked and sang to us. It was more expensive than we expected but was a real treat and experience we will treasure. Great wine, excellent steak, we should have shared a pasta dish as... More

Buca Marios has been serving high end meals for over a hundred years. The restaurant is like a maze with all sorts of old pictures of Florence. Old pics of the Duomo, churches, and every thing else that makes up Florence. The moment you arrive everyone you pass welcomes you. The selection on both the wine menu and dinner menu... More

This is the second time we were at this restaurant and loved it both times. Yes there were many tourist in the restaurant but it is right in the center of Florence between our hotel and the bus station. I think it would be very difficult to get away from sitting with fellow tourist here. Steak was great----Pasta wonderful. Will... More

We went for dinner here based upon a local's recommendation. It was by far the most we spent on any meal while we were in Italy for 9 days. The food was very good and the service attentive and charming. We didn't hear any Italian being spoken by customers which seems consistent with other TripAdvisor reviews. Most diners were tourists.... More

My wife and I had heard great things about this place from a friend who had recently visited plus it got great reviews. We were expecting amazing food and an authentic Italian experience. It was pretty clear upon being seated that this place is popular with Americans as every table around us was folks from the US or Canada. Staff... More

If you don't mind eating a great Italian meal surrounded by Asian and American tourists, then the food here is authentic and divine, and worth it. Of course the Florentine steak, but also the ravioli. Seasonal dishes like squash blossoms were really well executed. And the waiters are so accommodating and charming, offering free tastes of this and that. They... More

There are several great places to get the Florentina T-Bone, but this is the best. Our first time to Buca Mario was due to another Trip Adviser review from a Texas patron. Even though he was an Aggie, his review noted it was the best steak he had ever eaten; that is a strong comment from a Texan! And he... More

Staying in Santa Maria Novella

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Maria Novella
Santa Maria Novella train station welcomes the majority of the people arriving in Florence, which might explain the hectic pace. Commuters and tourists come across the constant hustle and bustle of the station before exiting, taking a few steps and stopping amazed in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. It is impossible not to admire the the square, housing one of the most charming basilicas in Florence. The area has plenty of local spots to taste Tuscan specialties, but don’t stop in the main streets alone; the narrower side streets always ensure satisfaction. The huge Parco Delle Cascine provides a solution to the need for a green area as well as a historic welcome in the form of a bronze statue of King Vittorio Emanuele II riding a horse.
