Its a bar, it has a selection of food bites you can put on a plate. Cocktails are available, prices are pretty decent for Firenze.

While the butter chicken may be most popular dish on the menu, the artichoke omelette (as a starter) was a standout. I have a soft spot for meringue desserts, and so I ordered the meringue cake. It was outstanding. The service was terrific as well. Out waiter was attentive and the service was swift.

Been here before to this ancient restaurant with its communal tables and its no frills food - a bit like London's St John. Warm rolls and great house red accompanied by an artichoke "torta" (omelette) and a plate of stewed boletus mushrooms. Heaven.

We enjoyed our meals here. We visited during lunch hour just before they open and managed to get a seat. I would say this is our best meal during our 2 weeks holiday. The butter chicken is heavenly.

We visited Sostanza on a recommendation. The summary is: - So much butter in each dish, it was overwhelming - Dishes were very basic - Main feature dish is chicken baked in butter - first bite tastes good, but so does KFC, or any other fried chicken. This is Italy, save the fried butter chicken for a fast food joint.... More

We have been to similar restaurants where you are seated with other people at tables for six or eight and we enjoy that. You always meet interesting people and it adds to the experience of being away from home. Two seatings and a reservation is required - I recommend you have your hotel book for you. Appetizers came quickly and... More

The restaurant was a very small, typical trattoria in Florence. Very few tables so make a reservation. There were two dinner times available and we chose to come at 9:00 time slot. We were a party of 5 and were sat at a communal table with 2 others, which we did not mind. We shared several dishes on the menu,... More

I used to take there my best clients. In Florence Distanza is also known as "il troia" saying it nicely "the dirty" because the originale owner was also the Cook and used to greet clients with his dirty hands. The Fiorentina is just amazing: whike it is used served grilled outside and Pink in the middle, this one is just... More

This was a major surprise. It's a really small old fashioned restaurant. They only take cash. But the food is amazing. The butter chicken and floretine steak were incredible. Maybe some of the best menu items we had in a two week tour of Italy.

We've been to several places in Italy and love both the food and the people. In Florence, after reading the very positive reviews here we tried the trattoria sostanza, expecting a small, local, family-like restaurant with a good atmosphere. Everything we usually like. The food was indeed good, although we found it way too expensive for what you get! (Portions... More

Staying in Santa Maria Novella

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Maria Novella
Santa Maria Novella train station welcomes the majority of the people arriving in Florence, which might explain the hectic pace. Commuters and tourists come across the constant hustle and bustle of the station before exiting, taking a few steps and stopping amazed in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. It is impossible not to admire the the square, housing one of the most charming basilicas in Florence. The area has plenty of local spots to taste Tuscan specialties, but don’t stop in the main streets alone; the narrower side streets always ensure satisfaction. The huge Parco Delle Cascine provides a solution to the need for a green area as well as a historic welcome in the form of a bronze statue of King Vittorio Emanuele II riding a horse.
