10 years ago we enjoyed a lunch at Sostanza's and today was just as fulfilling. Same decor, same great food, same good service. We had La Bistecca Alla Fiorentina, Petti Di Pollo Al Burro, Insalada Mista, & for dessert Dolce Con Fragoline plus wine and water. For 2 the cost was 85 Euros. There are no hidden charges as others... More

This is my all time favourite restaurant in the world. It is very small, and old fashioned. Some of the tables are shared, and usually full of Italian families. Cooking done on old fashioned wood burning stove. No credit cards, no coffee machines, forget low cholesterol diets as plenty of butter etc. but utterly charming, captivating and delicious. Worth a... More

The food was excellent, particularly the chicken. The pasta was also delicious. We had the house wine which was a chianti and it was wonderful.

Easily the most delicious meal I had in Tuscany - just some chicken breasts cooked in butter but let me tell you, it was a religious experience! The restaurant itself is kind of this whole in the wall down a side street, you have to go looking for it - but it was neat inside. Lots of photos on the... More

We heard about the butter chicken and it did not disappoint. The dish came out sizzling hot and the chicken was moist and flavorful - we even took the bread and mopped up every bit of the butter left in the pan. We also had the artichoke omelet was simple and light. For dessert, the waiter recommended their strawberry meringue... More

After being advised to go here by a friend who lives in the city we visited one evening only to be told they were fully booked, we did however booked for the next night. It appeared to be an authentic Italian restaurant, very snug too. I had a the butter chicken which was fine for what it was. Service too... More

Group of twelve for lunch after a half-day tour of Florence. Their chicken dish was the best I ever had, and most in my party agreed. Good service. Would go back.

We heard amazing things about this family style restaurant in Florence. Reservations are critical as they only seat about 30. We were seated with an Italian couple who are regulars and had a great time. The place is a very typical local favorite with no frills or fancy furnishings. From the outside it looks like nothing special and you could... More

It has been a while since I reviewed this restaurant and I revisited this week. I also read a number of new reviews and feel compelled to speak to the authenticity of the Sostanza experience. Here are absolutes that anyone who makes a reservation will already know: 1. you must have a reservation (the review stating people without a resv.... More

Trattoria Sostanza was recommended by a couple of different people so my expectations were high. Perhaps my sister and I ordered the wrong things but I thought the entire experience was sub par. I ordered the prosciutto to start and it was sliced too thick and didn't taste fresh. I had much better prosciutto at other restaurants in Florence -... More

Staying in Santa Maria Novella

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Maria Novella
Santa Maria Novella train station welcomes the majority of the people arriving in Florence, which might explain the hectic pace. Commuters and tourists come across the constant hustle and bustle of the station before exiting, taking a few steps and stopping amazed in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. It is impossible not to admire the the square, housing one of the most charming basilicas in Florence. The area has plenty of local spots to taste Tuscan specialties, but don’t stop in the main streets alone; the narrower side streets always ensure satisfaction. The huge Parco Delle Cascine provides a solution to the need for a green area as well as a historic welcome in the form of a bronze statue of King Vittorio Emanuele II riding a horse.
