Sostanza is always a good experience. It's the same food as in all the other restaurants, but it's just a bit better here and the atmosphere is so nice. We were the only tourists that evening, all the others were locals.
maybe it's because it's Firenze, but food was super expensive and little portions. you can say that the quality is better, but a mixed salad with half a tomato at 8€ is not justified. we ended up paying 50€ pp for sharing an appetizer, one...main dish and house wine. we took a dessert somewhere else.More
I would honestly rate this place a seven if I could. My wife and I have been road tripping across Italy and this is hands down the best restaurant we have eaten in.
We shared two starters, the crostini and fennel salami, both were substantial...and delicious.
Then for mains we ordered both the Florentine steak and butter chicken. The excellent staff suggested we could share both and we did so with beans and porcini on the side.
The flavours... Fantastic. Other reviews have stated how good the butter chicken is for the simplicity of the recipe, it really is outstanding. Steak was perfectly cooked, flavourful and hefty indeed, and accompanied by the porcini was heaven.
For desert we had the meringue with raspberries and alpine strawberries. Again both substantial and absolutely mouth watering.
Polished off with a 500ml carafe of the delicious house red, and all still somehow under 100 euro for three courses and drinks for two people. Whoever said overpriced is on another planet...
Quite simply fantastic!!More
After reading a few people's comments saying the restaurant is overrated and pricey, I still decided to try it out and I'm glad I did! It was Delicious and the waiter was top notch (bilingual and five star hotel worthy). The food may be a...bit pricey but you come out full anyway. I took the chicken broth for 5€ (well worth it as a primo plate!) and the famous artichoke (SUPER DELICIOUS!), finished it with the Marie cake drizzled with fresh raspberries aside (YUM! And I'm French so I'm not normally easily impressed by dessert outside of France hahaha). The house wine was nice and correct, 4,50€ was worth the half liter (think they charged us for less than 1/2 as a nice gesture). Seriously, my bf and I thought we'd walk into a tourist trap but I'm so glad I tried this restaurant. A bit pricey but when you consider the food quality and service, it's worth it (instead of paying a few euros lesser for a lousy touristy restaurant). My appetite and me really enjoyed ourselves.
P. S: Not a fan of praising restaurants normally. So Bravo!More
There’s a lot of hype with this chicken, 2 pc breast for €20. While I think its good chicken, I personally feel it’s overrated (it did not blow me away). We particularly enjoyed the artichoke pie and I’d also give the meringue dessert 5 stars....I’d probably return for that over the chicken.
Service was excellent, everyone spoke English and very attentive. The place is small so reservation is a must.More
We had the best evening at Trattoria Sostanza. That sat us with another American couple and we enjoyed our getting to know each and sharing travel stories. My husband had the famed butter chicken and I tried the artichoke pie. Both were excellent.
Went for the bistecca, ate seconds of the amazing chicken with butter sauce instead. Probably hands-down one of the best, most simplest things I've eaten in my life. We sopped every piece of the sauce up with bread and pasta and ordered another serving. The...bistecca barely got touched. To finish, we had wild strawberries with cream.... 4 times. Amazing, simple meal.More
Trattoria Sostanza showed up on many "best of Florence" lists we looked at before our trip, and two people we met in Florence also recommended it, for good reason. It's seriously old school. No frills dining room, the walls lined with photos of folks who've...dined there going back decades. Service is brisk, professional, and friendly. We started with a platter of Tuscan meats and chicken liver crostini. Both were great. Our daughter had the tortellini in broth, my husband had the Bistecca alla Florentine, and I had their famous butter chicken. All of it was good, but the chicken was sublime. We had two desserts featuring delicious tiny wild strawberries. Loved this place. Definitely make a reservation well in advance, and they are cash only.More
