We have been to similar restaurants where you are seated with other people at tables for six or eight and we enjoy that. You always meet interesting people and it adds to the experience of being away from home. Two seatings and a reservation is required - I recommend you have your hotel book for you. Appetizers came quickly and... More

The restaurant was a very small, typical trattoria in Florence. Very few tables so make a reservation. There were two dinner times available and we chose to come at 9:00 time slot. We were a party of 5 and were sat at a communal table with 2 others, which we did not mind. We shared several dishes on the menu,... More

I used to take there my best clients. In Florence Distanza is also known as "il troia" saying it nicely "the dirty" because the originale owner was also the Cook and used to greet clients with his dirty hands. The Fiorentina is just amazing: whike it is used served grilled outside and Pink in the middle, this one is just... More

This was a major surprise. It's a really small old fashioned restaurant. They only take cash. But the food is amazing. The butter chicken and floretine steak were incredible. Maybe some of the best menu items we had in a two week tour of Italy.

We've been to several places in Italy and love both the food and the people. In Florence, after reading the very positive reviews here we tried the trattoria sostanza, expecting a small, local, family-like restaurant with a good atmosphere. Everything we usually like. The food was indeed good, although we found it way too expensive for what you get! (Portions... More

The butter chicken lives up to the hype! It's Like heaven in your mouth. Don't miss it. Closed sat and sunday. Arrange your schedule accordingly. You won't regret it. Friendly staff.

This restaurant came highly recommended from a friend. Our family of four walked and walked to find this place which is tucked away on a small street. When we arrived there was a line of people waiting to be seated. We were turned away because we did not have a reservation despite telling the host that it took us forever... More

I had my first meal at Sostanza exactly 33 years ago on my honeymoon. It was recommended by our hotel concierge when we asked for an authentic and good restaurant. We were back ten years ago with our daughters and they loved it. I went back the third time recently with my younger one. Nothing much has changed. The space... More

Recommended to us by family, we booked well ahead. If you want a private candle-lit meal, don't go here. It's a narrow, noisy restaurant where you may find yourself sitting elbow to elbow and maybe even sharing wine (as we chose to) at your table with another party. A local Italian couple and their father in our case. We sat... More

Staying in Santa Maria Novella

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Maria Novella
Santa Maria Novella train station welcomes the majority of the people arriving in Florence, which might explain the hectic pace. Commuters and tourists come across the constant hustle and bustle of the station before exiting, taking a few steps and stopping amazed in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. It is impossible not to admire the the square, housing one of the most charming basilicas in Florence. The area has plenty of local spots to taste Tuscan specialties, but don’t stop in the main streets alone; the narrower side streets always ensure satisfaction. The huge Parco Delle Cascine provides a solution to the need for a green area as well as a historic welcome in the form of a bronze statue of King Vittorio Emanuele II riding a horse.
