Established by a Swiss family, when Florence was still under the Medici Family, Gilli is the city’s oldest cafe – opened in 1733 as “Bottega dei Pani & dei Dolci” near the Duomo. It moved to Piazza della Repubblica in the early ‘90s, where it’s still located today, is the city’s only example of an Art Nouveaux style cafe. Over time, the business evolved according to the city’s transformations. In the mid-1800s it relocated from Via degli Speziali to its current location, on the same square as other historic venues, such as Caffe Paszkowski. It soon became a favorite of writers, artists, and actors from all over the world, and today is still the place where famous designers meet when in town

It is one of the oldest cafe in the world , more than 300 years old and it is the best in town. The service one of the top service and the food is home made , the chocolate nothing like

Drinks one evening and lunch the next day. The atmosphere is nice. Seating in a busy piazza that’s fun to people-watch. Covered restaurant that feels outside but is actually inside. The service was better for lunch than for drinks. Not sure if it was a...bad server or a busy evening. The food was good and the drinks were made well. Definitely worth a visit.More

From the outside it seems like a great place; middle of the square, plenty to people watch, quick drink. The staff were nice and attentive on my visit, but I didn’t care for the lunch menu offerings. Opted for a cocktail and a dessert. Definitely...overpriced compared to other places on this same trip. Found some tucked away jewels off the beaten path with better menus and prices. Guess you pay for the view. While it’s a great area, and my experience was decent, doubt I would go again.More

You better don't go there if you're black or dark skin... I went there for my breakfast the waiter gave me the menu and left. They didn't come to take my order. I was just hungry and needed someone to take my order. I called...them twice and there were like "arrivo" but didn't come. I waited for almost 20 minutes. People was coming after me and got served but I didn't. Until i decided to stand up and go the to bar near. And i heard both bars are for the same owner but my experience to gilli was vomiting.. Fortunately the other bar made it up to me. I would never ever recomend it to anyone.More

Slowest service I've been to for a drink. Atmosphere is cool and drinks were good, but it shouldn't take 25 minutes for them.

I would never eat there again as a consequence of how poor and inattentive the staff were. They didn’t listen to answers I gave to their questions. Ignored me as they were walking around so I couldn’t ask them to fix their mistake. The pastry...I had was really delicious though so I would go back for a takeaway which I would have in a nicer environment.More

At the heart of Florencia historical center, a quiet place to enjoy the best Italian "dolce" and hot drinks. Service is quick and efficient. We highly recommend !

Overpriced and not so great pastries. Overly expensive drinks. Waiter pushing to get a tip. Good if you want to be seen on a night terrasse otherwise move on there is much better in Florence.
