Great informal atmosphere with characterful helpful staff. We really enjoyed food here. You write what you want then go and pay at the till. Good wine that was recommended to us @€18. Food very tasty. If you order the salad beware it’s a bowl that is filled at the counter to the top. It’s lovely but very large. All dishes were large. We really ordered too much as we didn’t know the portion sizes. We ordered pudding and this was the least favourite part of the meal as they were all a little dry if you had the vegan option because there was no vegan cream, yoghurt etc.

It’s great to find somewhere in Italy specifically catering for vegetarians. Most of the restaurants I’ve visited have only meat and fish options for the primi and secondi style meals so it was great to go somewhere where I could order from the whole menu. The vegetable lasagna was definitely a highlight and they had wine available by the 1/2 litre. A build your own side salad option was also available and made a healthy change compared to pizza. The food was a very reasonable price and was large portions. The desserts looked great too. It seemed to be mostly frequented by Italian people, but our server knew some English and French too.

We found this restaurant on a whim and were blown away! Half of our group are Italian, however if you are not an Italian speaker the staff are very friendly to foreigners and translation will not be an issue. We noticed how popular the venue was with locals and for good reason. The food (and drink) was amazing, incredibly generous portion sizes and exceptional value for money. The layout and style of the venue is quaint and the atmosphere is fantastic, would highly recommend to locals and tourists alike, 5 star!

We read some good reviews about this place and were excited to go but to be honest we were bitterly disappointed. The food was tasty enough without being anything really special. The service, however, was appalling. Orders are not taken at the table, you look at the menu and write down what you want, then take the note to the counter and pay, which is totally fine. However, we were two people and ordered two entrees and two main courses, each clearly marked on the menu as different courses. A few minutes later all four dishes were delivered to our table at the same time. What kind of restaurant just brings all the courses out and dumps them on the table at once? The food was also lukewarm, which meant that by the time we got to eat the main courses, they were pretty much stone cold. While the food was not expensive, it was also not super cheap - it was 55 euros for 2 entrees, 2 mains and 2 carafes of wine - certainly not cheap enough to justify it being all dumped at once and not even hot. I would never return here - very disappointed.

We have been here twice now, once with a large group and again just two of us. Delicious food and they took such good care of us! Gluten-free options clearly marked on the menu, great wine, delicious pesto, tofu, ooooooh the cheescake!!! We are already planning another visit while in Florence. The back patio is so pretty, sit outside and listen to the birds. So nice that everything is vegetarian! There are still things to try!

Some of the best vegetarian food I've ever had. Enormous portions, great ambience - makes you feel good about a holiday in general. But the most spectacular thing about the place is the staff. Warm, funny, super helpful - it's the best of Italy !

Loved this place. Quirky, sociable and a real oasis for non-meat eaters. The food options were great and Orienta was so welcoming and helpful. Be prepared to go with the flow, from sharing tables to when the food comes out but that all adds to the enjoyable dining experience. The portion sizes are large, so you may want to share a first course if you are also having a main. Most importantly, save room for dessert. Thank you for a lovely evening Il Vegetariano :)

A fantastic place, a safe bet, it's been there since 1981 always offering amazing vegetarian food. The portions are more than generous, the taste is always exceptional, and the place has a vibrant energy. Always packed at lunchtime (no reservation is possible at that time, but people are quick and tables become available easily), you can reserve tables for dinner. The cakes are many and all amazing. Today I had a vegan Chocolate cake with berries and I couldn't believe how goos it was.

We're always very excited to try a 100% vegetarian restaurant knowing we can eat anything we want on the menu and we were excited to learn that Il Vegetariano existed. It's a bit of a walk outside of the center of Florence but we'd thought we'd see what the Italian vegetarian focus experience was like. It was serviceable, but not as great as we'd hoped. The concept is interesting...the menu changes every day depending on the whims of that days chef, so our experience could have been informed a bit by just what we experienced that day, and might have been completely different on another day. An issue sometimes with all vegetarian restaurants is they specialize in the concept of being vegetarianism, without necessarily specializing in a particular kind of food which can lead to a mish-mash of disconnected offerings which is what we found on the menu here. The night we were there, for example you could get Italian, Indian, and strudel main dishes...all vegetarian, but otherwise not specializing in any particular type of food. We also didn't have a reservation. They were nice enough to seat us, but the restaurant was not at all full in any of its rooms (at any point when we were there) and the person who seated us, made a point of telling us they prefer reservations and then seated us at probably the least desirable table in the restaurant, right next to the cash register and right across from the salads display case which was the most trafficked area of the restaurant with people ordering their food hovering right over our table. We definitely felt like we were being unnecessarily punished with this table, especially when there were plenty of other places we could have sat and the overall demeanor of the person who seated us made us feel like she felt like she was doing us a big favor and she had her limits. So kind of a bummer of an introduction to the place. You order by writing down what you want on a slip of paper they provide you with, and then bringing that to the cashier to pay. That's fine, but it's not exactly "service" like you might get at any other sit down restaurant with servers and a wait staff. The food came extremely quickly...at the same time as the wine...It's hard to complain about quick service, but at most other places we experience in Italy (and the rest of the world for that matter) you get your wine first and can enjoy it a bit before the food shows up. We felt rushed. Also, and I'm sure I'm coming off as awfully picky, but you can see the high scores I typically give in my other reviews so...but the chairs were really uncomfortable to sit on. I typically don't think about the chairs at restaurants...these chairs made me think about them. My wife and I shared a lasagna and a greens-filled calzone-like pastry for our mains. Both of these portions were super-large...we appreciate generosity in portions, but these were just too large for us to be able to finish...both, especially the lasagna were really rich and heavy dishes too. They checked the box for being vegetarian but didn't excel to star dishes in terms of flavor or presentation that we'd want again. The desserts looked amazing but by the time we had eaten as much as we could of the mains, we just didn't want anything else or to hang around. We had many vegetarian-friendly meals at many restaurants in the cities we visited in Italy on this trip. This one was easily the most disappointing. If we lived in town we might come by to try the desserts or to see if it's a completely different experience with an unnecessary reservation and different chef...but otherwise, it wasn't really worth the walk out of the center of Florence to eat here.

Am rather mystified by the good reviews on here. Very average food. Tasted very much like 1970s vegetarian food to me.

We loved this restaurant, from start to finish! You will not be disappointed! We went on our first night in Florence after reading reviews. The vegetarian food is the best we have tasted, topped with great service by Orietta who is a gem! We had a great table surrounded by beautiful stained glass windows. This is the oldest vegetarian restaurant in Florence, with a great history. A new daily menu, created by 8 chefs. The food was delicious, fresh and so tasty! We had great wine, a good atmosphere and lots of laughter. Do make sure to make room for dessert! The best start to our stay in Firenze!

After three weeks in Italy and accidentally finding this beautiful hole in the wall restaurant, we can confidently say that it was absolutely the best meal we have had in Italy! The food is fresh and changes every day, the ingredients are nutrient rich and you ultimately feel better leaving than when you came in. We will absolutely be back multiple times before we leave Florence! The staff is helpful and funny and all around wonderful! Orietta is hands down the life of this place!

I love the food here. The portions are a good size and full of flavour. But most of all I come for the cake. Vegan and so good!
