Eat with Palermo's cognoscenti before it gets too expensive. Simple food cooked very well with top ingredients. You can either sit in the alfresco street restaurant or in the indoor cafe. All this sitting under one of Palermo's many lovey churches, in this case Chiesa di San Francesco d'Assisi. We had the focaccia which was basically a huge rectangular pizza,... More

I went on a Sunday and it was like Grand Central Station. Locals and tourist swarming and no direction. After organizing the crowd, I got the waiters attention and then got seated within 5 minutes. Amazing food. The specialty is a spleen with cheese sandwich -- yes, that's what I said. Spleen is something like eating tongue and the people... More

We visited Anticca Foccaceria specifically to try the vaunted street food classic meusa sandwich, a combination of stewed beef spleen with cheeses on a focaccia roll. It was tasty but underseasoned, to our way of thinking. For those who can't pass up the opportunity to taste unusual foods, it's still worth the trip. We found another branch in the Palermo... More

This place was very near our b&b and seemed lovely , so we figured what could possibly go wrong... So, the food is wrong. Totally! For a drink this place would be perfect, but if food is on the agenda, look elsewhere

Whan in Palermo I make a pilgrimage to this spot -- for the food, atmosphere and the history. It's here that the brave, anti-Mafia movement called Addiopizzo got its start.

It's a little confusing as to what this place actually is, especially to non-natives. San Francesco basically stretches across the entire square, the "restaurant" bit being outdoors and potentially requiring a queue while the "street food" bit is (I think?) inside. We got a table outside. The menu offers tapas-style dishes or more traditional 2/3 course meal. Opted for 2... More

We visited on a Tuesday evening and the place was busy. With many locals coming in to eat. The food was authentic and tasty. Arancini was tasty but (unfortunately) cold in the middle. Focaccia with anchovies was very good and would recommend. Pasta was good and tasted fresh. The cannoli was excellent. Only thing that let us down was the... More

The setting of this restaurant is half the charm and definitely worth seeking out. We opted for table outside and had a mix of the street food, all of which was delicious. It is certainly an experience to eat here. It gets very busy though and the evening before we couldn't get a table.

Went for a lunch on a Sunday, really busy and lively, all food coming out looked great, we ate a pizza and the classic pasta with sardines. Really nice setting, to eat outside in the square.

One of the great eating experiences in Palermo. Famous, and rightly so. Be brave and go indoors and order, and sit inside along with the Sicilians. Try the schiacciata, a delicious pizza-like thin flat bread with various fillings. The arancini are great too, and they do a very nice and generous glass of house wine. Real, authentic Palermo.
