Okay, all the San Marco cafes are expensive. Cafe Florian offers a tasty food and coffee selection, all usually accompanied by the awesome live music outside. How often does one get to Venice? Surely a few dollars here will be worth the life-time memories! :-)

Cafe Florian is said to be he oldest coffee house in the world, dating back to 1720 and boasting guests such a Goethe, Casanova and Charles Dickens (also the only cafe that allowed women guests at the time). I have been there a few times and i have enjoyed my self each time there. Sitting outside is challenging in July... More

I think it's hard to say anything about Caffe Florian that hasn't been said before. We visited on the evening of the 14th July, around 10pm. The bulk of the tourists had moved on and we were pulled in by the romantic charm of the little orchestra playing against the background of the Piazza San Marco, lightening flashing from a... More

Florian is where coffee was first drunk in Europe imported by Venetian traders from Turkey A gelato icecream costs €15 or more these days and although it is delightfully romantic to sit in the sun and listen to their little orchestra playing, this is a steep priced tourist joint on San Marco square. You are paying for the locale not... More

It's hard to justify the $34 for two cappuccinos outside the cafe, but the live classical music was very nice and the views out onto the plaza were excellent. Cappuccinos themselves were small but tasted good. $6 cover charge per person plus $9.50 drinks so be prepared!

Totally worth a drink or two, or a dessert to sit smack-dab in the center of Piazza San Marco, listening to an orchestra and watching the going-ons of the square. I've never tried sitting inside BUT I just adore the beautiful old-fashioned decor in there. Oldest cafe in Venice, and totally worth the cost considering what you get from a... More

Sitting and enjoying a bottle of wine while enjoying music in St. Mark's Square. I can't think of a better way to spend an evening in Venice.

Florian is my favorite cafe in piazza San Marco. The interior rooms are beautiful and the orchestra is the least kitschy of those on the piazza. Great for a before or after dinner drink on a summer night around sunset. Unfortunately the quiche I ordered was sad. Soggy and clearly microwaved. Should have complained.

We're staying by St Mark's so dropped by for a coffee. Whilst very pricey at €31.00 we thought the service was excellent and the coffee great. It's one of the oldest cafes in Venice and going since 1720. The waiters are very smart, polite and helpful. We enjoyed watching the world go by and the hustle and bustle of the... More

This historic Cafe, opened in 1720, is a step back in time. Each room is individually decorated and the service is over the top. A real treat

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
