We had actually planned on eating elsewhere but it had no availability, so we walked to this spot which was recommended by our Free Walking Tour guide. We are so glad we did! They had great wine selections and both of our meals were delicious. My husband had the braised duck and I had the lasagna primavera. This place also... More

We came in for a late dinner and a table for four. To our surprise we ended up having six. We were going to squeeze in and other server started yelling at us "YOU SAID FOUR WE HAVE NO ROOM FOR SIX!" Instead of being happy to have an opportunity to create more business we immediately left. We walked into... More

Worst service I've ever received in a restaurant. We got yelled for being 2 more than the reservation was told, even though there were bigger tables available. AVOID AT ALL COST.

We went here on the basis of a 'Rough Guide' recommendation when we were trying to find somewhere else. It was wonderful. Wonderful wine selection. Food available so different from standard Venecian fare. I had wonderful Guinea fowl and partner had lamb shanks. Both excellent, would definitely go back next time in Venice.

In a friendly atmosphere with good wines, you will enjoy the "spaghetti alle vongole", the "carpaccio" generously served. The waiter also gave very good advice for the meals and the wine. Exceptional moments in a very very touristic city.

Dinner at La Mascareta recently in early June 2016 was our second visit to this great little Enoiteca. We first visited on another trip to Venice in 2011, and enjoyed the food and service immensely. As a result, we wanted to return once again to see if we would once again be impressed, and it did not disappoint. This restaurant... More

This is an excellent place to have an amazing glass (or bottle) of natural wine and some wonderful food. It is a casual enoteca, with plenty of food to make it your main meal. The service is friendly and prompt, can't wait to go back!

As a single older female I probably enjoyed this place a bit less than most folks - although, don't get me wrong, I still liked it and found the food to be fairly good. Ironically the only other single female diner was eventually seated at a table next to me - and we were right between the WC and the... More

Recommended to us by other Venice visitors we were not disappointed. Interestingly the restaurant is known also for its selection of gins and my wife enjoyed one of the best gin and tonics ever. Be patient - they take some time to prepare. The food and service were excellent. It's a cosy atmosphere and we were pleased that all the... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
