Our daughter sleeps and we eat lunch at La Caravella. Average thawed veal carpaccio, strange seabass tartare and supposedly scampi carpaccio. Main dishes are better, ravioli with scampi and filets of beef with Dijon mustard sauce. But desserts and coffee are not held, waiters forgot us. White wines are worth nothing. The staff is the same

I actually ate in the bar part of La Caravella because there were no reservations available until 9:30 at night which is way too late by my standards. I had wine and a sandwich and it was just okay.

We had drinks in the small bar area. Wonderful bellinis with a slice of peach. Apperitivos are great and we had wonderful pasta: shrimp ravioli, tagliatelle with duck meat sauce. Great location near San Marco. Go!

Doesn't look like much from the alley, but walk through to the open garden, and get ready for fine dining, in every sense of the word. I started with a favorite wine I can get in Jersey City: a 1/2 bottle of Vermentino Sardinia (28 E); then we split the Risotto all Astice (25 E), and it was sublime! Then... More

We booked by email a meal to celebrate our special wedding anniversary whilst we were in Venice on a cruise. The friendly staff recognised the special event right from the start and treated us so well. The menu is not massive but the food is well balanced with lots of flavour and good sized portions. We chose an unknown Italian... More

Our tour organiser (Sense of Italy) booked this restaurant for a late dinner for us after attending the La Traviata performance at the La Fenice Opera House. This stylish restaurant's menu is based around Venetian cuisine and our table was in the beautiful garden area. We only wanted something light given the late hour (10pm). We both had fish dishes... La Caravella restaurant in Venice can be discovered immediately behind the newly-restored La Fenice theatre, just a few paces from the Piazza San Marco. Stepping inside, you will feel as if you have entered an antique sailing ship, with dark wood paneling, capstans and ropes and leaded windows. In summer, you may not step inside at all as La Caravella moves into a flower-filled courtyard complete with original wells, or the lighter courtyard dining room with typical Venetian ambience. The menu is typically Venetian too, with dishes like classic saor, marinated sardines with onions, pine kernels and raisins, fish soup, or oven orast turbot with potatoes and olives. In addition, the chef uses fresh seasonal ingredients to create trendier fare. The excellent wine list features both historical wine producers and smaller boutique vintners. Planning a party? La Caravella welcomes wedding receptions, private dinners, banquets, corporate entertaining, even coffee breaks. The garden seats up to 65 and one of the dining rooms up to 75.

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
