best sample of Venetian food and wines, and a beautiful and old restaurant that is appealing. Very attentive service and able to explain the origins of the meals prepared

We had a great meal at Bistrot de Venise right after the Opera at La Fenice. The food was quite good and very reasonable compared to other choices near the theatre. We sat outside in the great small side street area which was perfect. The wait staff was particularly accomodating and took great pride in serving, felt very old world... More

We had an excellent dinner here on our last night in Venice with an outdoor table in an alley. The staff was very courteous and helpful showing us the menu and helping us to decide on the historical menu choices. Walter was especially helpful and friendly. We had a relaxing time enjoying the scenery in a small alley in Venice.... More

Tucked in an alley between Rialto Bridge and St Marco Square, this bistrot is, in fact, part of a hotel. The decoration, mainly red in colour, is quaint but plush. It prides itself in serving authentic century old Venetian cuisines. So we gave it a try. On the whole, the dishes we tried were all nicely prepared and met our... More

A local person recommended this to our party of 8. We loved the historical recipes from the 15th century as well as other choices. Our server, Davide, was amazing as well as his wine selections. Each dish was delicious and different-unlike anything else we had in Italy. The price was high, about €150/ couple with cocktails, a bottle of wine,... More

We located this restaurant after our fantastic Gondola experience, it looked fantastic. That was as good as it got, 40 minutes for 1st course then 5 min for 2nd Course. Not once did the waiter ask us if we needed anything, it was only when I got his attention did her respond. The price was extravagant for the food and... More

The service at Bistrot de Venise was outstanding, from the moment we arrived and were welcomed and seated at our table to the moment we left when the maitre d' checked that everything was OK and shook our hands. Friendly, professional service throughout. The restaurant is pricey, like many in Venice, but here you can eat something special. To start... More

On our walk through Venice on a very hot day we dropped on this place. Service was friendly and excellent from the minutte we said hi and were seated. The food was good (especially the white asparagus risotto with dark chocolate).

Recommended by our hotel (Hotel a la Commedia) as being a bit of a treat for our final night in Venice, we were somewhat underwhelmed by the external appearance of this place. Once inside however, it was a fabulous night. We very greedily had three courses each, and the wines recommended by the Sommelier to accompany our different desserts were... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
