One of our best meals in Venice. Family owned and run by the ever so charming and welcoming Maurizio who is the second generation (his late father bought the restaurant many years ago) and now his son the third generation is there. Food quality is splendid and let Maurizio guid you as to what is fresh. Seafood is the speciality... More

We had a wonderful experience here. After about ten minutes, we were given a glass of chilled Prosecco and then the owner came personally to explain the entire menu to us. He was charming and clearly passionate about his food and his efforts to make us feel comfortable really made this a memorable dining experience. We enjoyed a five course... More

Although it was not easy to find, I am delighted we did. A charming little place hidden away in a sweet neighborhood. We were greeted my Maurizio, the owner, who rattled off in perfect English all the specials of the day. He described each dish with passion and gusto! The food was beyond incredible. Desserts were unreal. Just a delight.

Our best meal during our 30th Wedding Anniversary tour of Italy. Exceptionally well prepared seafood dishes served with the utmost impeccable refined service. From start to finish a Michelin Star experience. Do not miss this restaurant during your visit to Venezia.

Excellent restaurant and atmosphere. I suggest making reservations in advance as there are about 15 tables. Our hotel recommended this place.I had the octopus salad and my husband had the soft shell crabs both excellent. For the main dish I had the the bass and my husband had the local eel. Both amazing! But the ultimate was the deserts- tiramisu... More

Our hotel concierge at Hotel Danieli recommended Hostaria da Franz and what a great recommendation it was. The owner was our waiter and maybe the best waiter we have ever had. He had such great passion and great detail of the description of the menu. The food was excellent and that is quite the accomplishment as my wife is not... More

The Maitre d' was an event in himself, Although if you imagine him as Christoph Waltz from Inglorious basterds whilst he does his menu recital, you'll not hear a word he says. We were talked through the menu rather than having a look at the written version, to be honest, it's a show in its self and his descriptions guild... More

From the moment we arrived we were greeted with such a sincere and warm welcome by the owner. He proceeded to take us to our table and began to explain in detail his favorite dishes. The food at Hostaria da Franz does not disappoint. There were only two of us, but because of his descriptions, we ordered three meals to... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
