The restaurant is not easy to find but worth seeking out. The restaurant is lovely and Maurizio was waiting to great us as we entered. He was amazing of how described his dishes with tremendous detail. Explaining where the fish was caught and where the vegetables were from etc. We did not look at the menu and took his recommendations.... More

We were lucky to get a reservation during the busy last weekend of October. After reading the reviews on Tripdavisor that were either raving, or very negative (with often a scolding answer from Maurizio) we were very curious. It turned out to be a fantastic evening. The service is great. From the start to the end. Maurizio will make your... More

This was a recommendation from the concierge at The Danieli Hotel and it was a fantastic dinner. The owner Maurizzio was engaging and helpful and we took all his suggestions for the dishes to eat rather than from the menu. The wine selection was also wonderful.

Our hotel concierge (at the Marriott) suggested we try this place if we liked seafood. It's a difficult place to find on your first trip but if you add a little time onto your agenda, you won't be disappointed with the various other Venetian locations you'll end up in on your way - it all adds to the experience and... Hostaria da Franz was recommended to us by staff at the Londra Palace Hotel, and were we ever thankful! The entire experience was outstanding! We loved the intimate atmosphere and the magnificent food. Maurizio (the owner) and his entire crew were extremely warm and welcoming, and it was obvious that they all LOVE what they are doing. Maurizio spent many... More

A delightful restaurant tucked away just off a main walkway. Luckily it was spotted by my wife. We were royally greeted by Maurizio and enjoyed a meal specialised in fish. The service was impeccable and it was good to see such smartly dressed staff who were most helpful throughout.

Good friends who frequent this restaurant whenever they visit Venice heartily recommended this restaurant. The food was fine, the service was excellent, there was a nice ambience, but the key to this place is Maurizio, the proprietor. The man just loves what he is doing and his enthusiasm sets the tone for the evening We loved it...from other reviews, obviously... More

Having spent three glorious days in Venice, lucky with superb weather, great exhibitions and wonderful meals, our crowning meal, on my birthday, was going to be at Da Franz. It is a beautiful little restaurant and its owner, Maurizio, makes a great show of promoting the seasonal dishes. My wife, who hates complaining in a restaurant, was served pasta that... More

One of our best meals in Venice. Family owned and run by the ever so charming and welcoming Maurizio who is the second generation (his late father bought the restaurant many years ago) and now his son the third generation is there. Food quality is splendid and let Maurizio guid you as to what is fresh. Seafood is the speciality... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
